Hotel Lombardy, Washington D.C.

2019 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20006, USA (show on map)

Hotel Lombardy is a true Washington, D.C. landmark, standing elegantly on Pennsylvania Avenue since its construction in 1926. Originally built as an opulent private residence in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood, it transitioned into a European-style boutique hotel in the 1970s. Its rich history spans nearly a century, having witnessed everything from the Great Depression and World War II to twenty Presidential inaugurations.

The building is celebrated for its classic 1920s architecture, featuring a striking red-brick and limestone facade. Inside, the hotel retains an intimate, old-world charm that feels worlds away from the standard modern hotel chains. Guests are surrounded by elegant furnishings, rich fabrics, ornate Oriental rugs, and original local artwork that pay homage to its storied past.

For those who enjoy fine dining without leaving the building, the hotel offers the charming Café Lombardy, which overlooks James Monroe Park, and the Venetian Room Bar & Lounge—a perfect spot for a quiet, sophisticated cocktail. These spaces are popular among locals and travelers alike for their refined, cozy atmosphere.

Its prime location is arguably its best feature for tourists. You are just blocks away from the White House, the World Bank, and the IMF. Major cultural hubs like the Renwick Gallery and the monuments of the National Mall are also easily accessible. Whether you are in town for business or to explore the nation’s capital, Hotel Lombardy provides a timeless, historically significant home base.

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“Done up in Venetian decor and beloved by World Bank and State Department types, this European boutique hotel has multilingual staff and an international vibe – you hear French and Spanish as often as English in its halls.”

Convenient location, good position for the university, national mall and restaurants.

We were fortunate to get upgraded to a suite. It was clean, spacious, and comfortable. It had more features than we could actually use, like a small kitchenette (sink / refrigerator) with a small dining table. Mattress and bedding were very comfortable. Staff at the front desk as well as the doormen were all pleasant.

Unique beauty at an affordable price

The location is excellent and the hotel is beautiful, clean and unique. Staff were great, very friendly and helpful.

My only minus point was the tv in the room- it was ancient! Lots of analog channels and blurry picture.

The Lombardy is an excellent choice and with multiple stays, it is continually a favorite of mine.

This was my fifth stay at the hotel and I will definitely be there again when I am back in DC. The staff throughout the hotel are exceptional - from the front desk to the front door, the restaurant and the cleaning team. They went out of their way to more than meet our needs. I said to my colleague that it felt as if they were all there just to take care of us. No one was hurried and they anticipated what we would need. The food in the restaurant is excellent and there is even a lovely bar in the back.

I am not sure what could have been better. All was excellent.

Charming hotel, very good value

Charming European-style small hotel. Quiet restaurant serving delicious, reasonably priced food. Excellent location, spacious room with separate little kitchenette. Great water pressure in shower/bath.

The only thing we didn’t like is that we found the bed too hard.

An oasis of calm and beauty in central DC

Hotel Lombardy is pure class. It’s my preferred choice in WHS DC. The staff is like family. The kindness and the service something not even the 5 star hotels in town can match. Perfectly located for business and for tourism. You can easily walk to the White House.

A wonderful hotel that almost makes you feel like family.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Our waiter at the hotel restaurant, Mohamed, chatted with us about Washington and the surrounding area, and reminiscing about his time living in Jackson Heights, NY. He even recalled one of my favorite restaurants (Lum's) in Flushing. Staying at this hotel was a very nice experience. Definitely would recommend.

Nice overnight stay to rest from seeing the cherry blossoms and the museums.

Checked in March 28 with a request for a nice room with a view and the Filipina receptionist did give us such a room. Location was walking distance to places we wanted to visit and to the Metro.

Overall, i was happy with the room. I would encourage you to install USB plug ins to update a bit.

The Suite met my expectations for room size and comfort. It was nice that each room had its own door.

Someone didnt thoroughly vet the room supplies. I was short in the refrigerator, and in the bathroom there was no bath gel in the shower(bottle was empty).

Very comfortable bed and room, with nice ambiance and lighting. Convenient to the metro. Very friendly and helpful sta

The king size bed was super comfortable, and we had extra pillows. We slept really well. I really appreciated the lighting. There were table lamps instead of overhead lighting, and it is just so much nicer. The room was spacious and had a comfy chair, and a desk with a chair, even a small kitchenette, with a mini bar (which we did not use) but we liked having a fridge to put a few things in, and a coffee maker, and wine glasses. The hotel has historic charm, and everyone was very friendly and helpful, even lending us umbrellas, and storing our luggage after check out.
The location was convenient to the Foggy Bottom metro, with easy access to the airport and the Smithsonian museums.
I also want to say that it was a very good price. I highly recommend this hotel when you are visiting Washington DC

The kitchenette could be a little better if it had a a few plates, or fork or spoon, but we had plastic togo ones. A microwave would have been terrific.
But just having a small table and chairs to eat at was very nice.
