The Burrard, Vancouver

1100 Burrard Street, V6Z 1Y7 Vancouver, Canada. (show on map)

The Burrard is a standout piece of mid-century history in downtown Vancouver. Originally opened in 1956 as the Burrard Motor Inn, it was designed to cater to the booming car culture of the era. Decades later, it was lovingly restored and transformed into a boutique hotel that embraces its retro, “cool” heritage while offering modern comfort.

The hotel is defined by its open-air courtyard, which serves as a peaceful urban oasis complete with a fire pit and ping pong tables. This layout reflects its original “motor hotel” architecture, featuring exterior corridors and a nostalgic aesthetic that feels distinct from the typical high-rise towers in the city. Guests often appreciate the quirky, locally-owned charm and thoughtful extras, like free bike rentals for exploring the neighborhood.

Beyond its unique design, The Burrard is a fantastic home base for travelers. It is situated right at the crossroads of Yaletown and the West End, putting you within easy reach of the city’s best shopping, dining, and nightlife. It sits across from St. Paul’s Hospital and is just a short trip from iconic landmarks like the lush Stanley Park, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the historic streets of Gastown.

Whether you are grabbing a coffee at the on-site cafe or using the complimentary cruiser bikes to navigate the seawall, The Burrard balances a relaxed, independent spirit with a prime downtown location. It captures the essence of Vancouver as both a gateway to nature and a vibrant, modern city.

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“A groovy makeover a few years back transformed this 1950s downtown motel into a knowingly cool sleepover with a tongue-in-cheek retro feel (neon exterior sign included). Colorful, mostly compact rooms have been spruced up with modern flourishes and contemporary amenities such as refrigerators and flat-screen TVs.”

Fodors review:

“If “funky retro chic” is your accommodations tyle of choice, you’ll definitely want to check out The Burrard. This modern hotel looks like a retro California beach hotel that made a smooth landing smack in the middle of Vancouver. From the palm trees in the courtyard to the glitzy furnishings and decor, the property feels like a throwback to kitschy, 50s Hollywood—in the best possible way.”

Frommers review:

“The Burrard Motor Inn first opened its doors in 1956 as the cool new kid on Vancouver’s block. Now, after a major reno, it’s that cool kid once again. Its location is a good one—right on busy Burrard Street, across the street from St. Paul’s Hospital and within a short stroll of English Bay.”

New York Times review:

“The Burrard is a revamped 1950s motel in the core of downtown, with plenty of retro-chic touches, from its neon sign to a palm-filled inner courtyard.”

Consistently good

This is the third time I have stayed at the Burrard and it is still my go to when in Vancouver. It was great to see the streets have been cleaned up since I was last there three years ago, so unless you go down an alley way it now feels safer to walk around. Location is good with a nice walk to Burrard Station / easy to get to/from the airport by train. The front desk staff are always pleasant and welcoming. Standard of the room is always consistently good and is comfortable for a short stay. Better value compared to other hotel rooms in the CBD.

Absolutely fantastic and helpful staff.

Location.

The bathroom window leading into the alley - loud at night, lots of traffic, people fighting and screaming, but I guess it’s coming with the location.

Great value, quiet and relaxing. Will be my first pick if I'm ever in Vancouver.

Staff were amazing and had my room availble at 8:30am, which was the most wonderful surprise after a long flight. Their unlimited complimentry bottled water was so helpful. Room was simple and clean. Their comfy outdoor area with an open fire was a lovely addition. Overall was a nice and relaxing place to come back to after a long day of walking around and sight-seeing.

It was a shame the room didn't have a mircowave, literally the only thing that I found inconvenient.

Decent price and location if you don't mind the noise.

Reasonably priced, relatively clean and very good staff.

Central location, but it's right opposite from the hospital so expect non-stop ambulances with sirens throughout the night.

I love that they are pet friendly but very clean at the same time.

Pet friendly, nicely updated retro hotel and very convenient location!

Very loud, but that's what you get in the middle of a big city.

Great location!

Location is really nice, on a main street easy to find. It is a great place to stay if you plan to explore the city. Room was clean and comfy. staff was super helpful.

When you go to your room you can smell what restaurant downstairs is preparing (it can be a good and bad thing at the same time) wen we arrived there in the evening the smell was quite strong. Elevator is also a bit slow. Bathroom windows opens up to path where other guests are passing by to get to their rooms so it is not super safe or comfortable.

Great experience at one of the last downtown independent hotels

Love the retro design, comfort of rooms, coffee and mini fridge in room, outdoor space, proximity to shops and galleries. Staff were friendly and efficient and housekeeping were great.

The bathroom was a bit shabby and small.

Good for the money

Great location with many places to eat and shop within walking distance. Comfy beds, clean rooms .

Bathrooms are small but very clean. No pool or hot tub on site. Near the hospital so you hear a fair amount of sirens.

A lovely quirky little hotel in the middle of high rise glass boxes.

It was in a good location with easy access to everything including the Big bus stop right across the street.

The lift was very slow!

Great location within walking distance to the central city and restaurants.

Location to the city

Air condition unit was very loud in bedroom. The deposit taken from credit card upon check in for incidentals was very slow to be returned to our account. Instead of the 5 days we were told it took 1 calendar month which was disappointing.

Quirky stay and not as pricey as some Downtown Hotels

Very retro and quirky. Calm oasis in the middle. Decent location close to ferries to Granville Island and walkable to the Waterfront/Stanley Park/ Davie Street.

Staff at reception did not ask us if we needed any info about the neighbourhood or the facilities (We discovered the free bikes, table tennis and the tourist leaflets on checkout), Air conditioning a bit noisy.

The Burrard is a comfortable, safe haven in a very convenient downtown location.

Overall, we liked the Burrard. The location is great, right downtown within walking distance of the Granville Market (via Aquabus), on a bus route, and with a trolley tour stop just down the street. The hotel was clean and comfortable. We loved the open atrium in the center with the beautiful tropical garden. Our room was plain but very functional; the bed was quite comfortable. Plenty of good food choices were available within a block or two walk.

The portable AC unit took up a bit of space in the room, but it was quiet and efficient.

Good for 1 quick night.

The Burrard was very clean and the staff was friendly. I liked the retro design of the building. I liked that it had a cafe attached to it and it is on a main street that leads to the shopping.

We were only at the Burrard for one night before leaving on a cruise. Our stay amounted to about 12 hours and I felt it was quite expensive. Though the room was very clean, it was extremely small and I do not care for having a dehumidifier type machine taking up most of the space on one side of the room.

Lovely stay with my daughter

The location was good, we walked to all the major attractions. Room very comfortable with everything we needed. Would definitely recommend to others and stay again.

There was no fan in the bathroom and the window didn't open which made it steamy after a shower. Expected noise from the near by hospital through the night but that didn't happen however we were woken at 4am every morning by noisy geese (obviously not the hotels fault).

Great location for anyone coming to Vancouver for the first time!

Great location! The free bike rentals were a bonus, especially to tour Stanley Park and stop at the beaches near by. Close to restaurants and the Aquabus to get to Grandville Island. Capilano free bus was a few blocks away, Canada Place and other tourist attractions.

Room cleanliness, sheets had some stains and the floor was not swept, we had sand everywhere. Bathroom sink is small and I never feel comfortable using shelves over the toilet to place my toothbrush.

Nothing comes to mind.
