Capella Hotel, Singapore

1 The Knolls, Singapore 098297 (show on map)

Tucked away in 30 acres of lush rainforest on Sentosa Island, Capella Singapore is a brilliant mashup of old-school history and futuristic design. The heart of the resort actually centers around two beautifully restored 1880s colonial military buildings, originally built to house British officers of the Royal Artillery.

To bridge the gap between past and present, the hotel brought in the big guns. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster designed the modern extensions, creating fluid, curved glass-and-limestone structures that frame the historic bungalows without overshadowing them. Inside, the late Indonesian design icon Jaya Ibrahim draped the spaces in a calm, earthy, and ultra-luxurious vibe.

The hotel layout is packed with unique architectural quirks. For instance, the grand ballroom features Singapore’s very first circular glass-dome skylight, which holds a massive, floating glass sculpture made of roughly 10,000 clear glass tubes. Outside, you’ll find a striking three-tiered cascading swimming pool that mimics the natural, rolling topography of the island.

Beyond its design, Capella holds a major spot in modern political history. Back in 2018, it served as the neutral backdrop for the historic North Korea–United States summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, sealing its status as a true global icon

Expert reviews

CNN review:

“The romanticism of the British colonial era lives on at the six-star Capella Singapore resort designed by Lord Norman Foster. Sprawling 30 acres, the 112-room property lives up to its luxe reputation with extras like a personal butler per guest, a three-tiered swimming pool overlooking the South China Sea.”

Forbes review:

“Colonial history gets a modern, sleek rewrite at Capella Singapore. The hotel located on the Singaporean satellite island of Sentosa combines exquisite old-colonial style with contemporary luxuries in stunning fashion. The gateways to this luxury hotel are its restored, white-washed bungalows, which have histories dating back to the late 1800s when the buildings were used as barracks and common areas for members of the British military and their families.”

Telegraph review:

“The 112-room Capella Singapore, which opened in 2009, is the preferred staycation address for the city’s deep-pocketed crowd. Sprawled across 30 acres of cascading hillside facing the South China Sea, the bucolic confines of the hotel offer a respite from the city’s hectic pace.”

In the middle of nature in Sentosa

The location is not bad, close to the beach and all the points of interest. Excellent room and perfect view of the sea. The pools are very nice, completely immersed in the tropical forest. The services also work properly.

The structure itself looks a bit like a barracks and is not integrated with nature, I'm referring to the exterior. The price is a bit expensive for the place itself.

An oasis - everything is beautiful. Don't spoil it by moving a muscle! Lazy poolside luxury.

Magical location - perfect for resting up, sipping green tea in the afternoon, great wines at night. Our room was serviced lovingly....seriously, the level of care and attention to detail was amazing. Beautiful views too. And lovely cool things arriving on your poolside table without request....

I had a great massage in the spa. But they over-charged me significantly and told me later it was in the fine print - they could change the price at any time. A strange and rather mean approach for a hotel where everything else was so focused on perfection.
