Mandarin Oriental, Prague

Nebovidská 459/1, 118 00 Malá Strana, Czech Republic (show on map)

The Mandarin Oriental, Prague, is a masterpiece of historical preservation, tucked away in the serene Malá Strana district. Housed in a complex of buildings that date back to the 14th century, the site was once a Dominican monastery. Over the centuries, these walls have served as a military hospital, police barracks, and even a state printing house before being transformed into the luxury hotel that opened in 2006.

The hotel’s design is a striking fusion of the ancient and the modern. One of its most captivating features is the spa, which is located in a former Renaissance chapel. Here, you can walk across a glass floor that reveals the excavated foundations of a 14th-century Gothic church—a literal window into Prague’s deep past. The interiors balance these historic stone vaults and original architectural elements with elegant, contemporary touches, including chandeliers and minimalist furnishings.

Each room is uniquely laid out, reflecting the complex, irregular geometry of the original monastery buildings. The hotel also pays homage to local culture through its signature fan—a brand staple—which was designed by Jarmila Mucha Plocková, the granddaughter of the famed Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha.

Its location is perfect for those who want to experience the city without being caught in the thick of the crowds. You are just a short walk from the iconic Charles Bridge and the majestic Prague Castle, allowing you to easily explore the city’s most famous landmarks while enjoying a quiet, sophisticated retreat in one of the capital’s oldest neighborhoods.

“In the quiet, cobblestoned Mala Strana district, this Gothic-Baroque beauty feels like an urban oasis hidden in plain sight. A 14th-century monastery, the Mandarin Oriental hotel blends original architectural features with contemporary touches.”

Fodors review:

“A gorgeous former monastery, the Mandarin Oriental Prague is probably Prague’s best large luxury hotel. Architects wisely chose to retain many of the Dominican monastery’s original flourishes when it was restored, creating a peaceful, inspired backdrop for the hotel’s luxurious offerings.”

Just okay. Not worth the money.

Big clean room

Quite noisy with events happening everyday and night. Opera singing could be heard all morning and evening.

I had asked for a birthday set up in the room that was not done after many calls and emails to ensure it was clear and would be set up.

They added a random room service charge on my bill and hoped I didn’t catch it but I didn’t and had it removed.

Overall quite disappointed

Very disappointing property for a Mandarin hotel

Great location, spacious rooms, very helpful staff

Terrible attitude and unprofessional behaviour of receptionist at time of check in, botch ups with room assigned, old dilapidated property and badly designed room and bathroom, unimpressive lobby and facilities

It really was a 5* hotel experience. Prague has lots to offer.

Stunning hotel, staff very attentive and friendly. Could not have been treated better. Whilst quiet it is literally round the corner from the centre of the city. There are pretty parks nearby and good restaurants only a short distance away.
