Hotel Pod 39 is a clever reinvention of a historic Manhattan building. The hotel occupies the former Allerton House, a landmark structure built between 1916 and 1918 as a residential hotel for young men. Its distinctive red-brick façade, terra-cotta details, and rooftop arches still give the building plenty of old New York character.
When Pod 39 opened in 2012, designer Vanessa Guilford created rooms inspired by compact forms of travel such as trains, ships, and airplanes. The result is a collection of small but highly efficient rooms with smart storage solutions, making the most of every square foot.
One of the hotel’s standout features is its rooftop lounge. Framed by dramatic brick arches from the original building, it offers memorable views of the Manhattan skyline, including the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. Downstairs, the lively Playroom lounge adds a social touch with communal seating, games, and a historic fireplace.
The hotel sits in Murray Hill, a neighborhood that feels calmer than Times Square while still being close to many famous attractions. Grand Central Terminal is only a short walk away, and guests can easily reach Bryant Park, the New York Public Library, and the Empire State Building on foot.
A fun fact: the building’s rooftop garden and striking arches were originally part of the early 20th-century design. More than a century later, they have become one of the hotel’s most photographed features, blending New York history with a modern, budget-friendly stay.
Expert reviews
“Rooms at the Murray Hill location all feature private bathrooms, along with free Wi-Fi and an emphasis on communal space typified by the Pod 39’s rooftop lounge. The hotel’s perks are few but if you want hip and affordable, you won’t likely do better.”

Close to everything, clean , safe , great bar and restaurant, a very New York staff .
Clean , Ryan at the bar was exceptional ,
Secure ( need your room card to enter building at night and to access elevator
Some staff in phone / front desk were snippy .
I’m from NYC born and raised and can deal with an attitude but, it was sometimes served where it wasn’t needed ! I avoided the front desk from then on .

Overall great value.
Location is fantastic. The hotel has a fantastic rooftop bar.
Noisy bar downstairs, so every time you come bad it's livelier that what you'd hope a reception would be. A bit noisy rooftop bar for the rooms on the floor.

Compact but bijoux
Rooms are small but v cleverly done, everything you need. The roof terrace was a joy to work from for the day although WiFi a little shaky up there. Super clean, friendly staff and great location for where I needed to be.
Nothing I didn’t like. It’s not cheap but definitely competitively priced compared to other places in the area. Room was perfect for me traveling alone. Would have been tight for two people but doable.

I was hesitant about pod 39 but glad I tried it. Will definitely be back. It's comfortable and perfect for a solo tr
clean accessible, and I love the roof deck and the breakfast downstairs
Not enough places to sit and work on the computer outside of his room, which is really small

Excellent location, great for a week trip
excellent location. walkable to many places. staff was great. rooftop exceeded our expectations. bed sizes are ok for 5.8ft. overall, I would suggest to anyone planning to visit nyc for few days.
the room was smaller then we expected. the thing we suffered most was bathroom is separated from the room with a thin, almost opaqu sliding door. I would prefer to have a better, isolated bathroom.

Basic, centrally located hotel in Manhattan
Centrally located. Easy walking distance to the Empire State building and the waterfront close to the UN building.
Very small rooms. Could have been cleaner. Noisy ventilation outside window.

Excellent place great price
This hotel is a great deal for small rooms in midtown. My room was clean and quiet and I slept great with the king size bed. There was just enough room to get around and the window shutters blocked out the light well. It was also quiet and cozy. The bathroom is small. The shower is great with a granite tile floor, not fiberglass. It is also a high shower head which is good for tall people and large people who have a hard time getting underneath some hotel shower heads. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The rooftop is great. Highly recommended.
The slightest bit of something was on the lower rack of the dresser.

Great location, clean hotel, nice staff
Great location, nice staff, clean hotel, but definitely the full size pod is perfect for one - or if you literally use it only to sleep at night, then the size is fine. The bed is comfortable, complementary coffee and tea in the morning, overall a good hotel in a great neighborhood.

Great location and comfortable room
Great location, close to major attractions, safe neighborhood, nice staff and comfortable room!
Taking shower was bit strange, because same handle controls both the heat and water intensity. Also it was unfortunately not possible to turn off the AC in the room, it kept turning on to maintain selected temperature and as light sleeper, I was woken up by it at night.

A Perfect Hotel for a Short Stay in New York
I was attending an event at the United Nations and was looking for a hotel nearby, which is why I booked this one. Having read some of the reviews and knowing that I had reserved a single pod room, I mentally prepared myself for a tiny space where I might feel somewhat claustrophobic. To my surprise, the room felt quite spacious. In addition to the bed, it had a table, a clothes rack, a safe, and a private bathroom.
I liked the room very much, as it was exactly what I needed for my stay. The hotel was quiet, and the location was excellent: close to Bryant Park, the UN, major sights, and numerous shops and restaurants. The area felt safe at all times.
The Wi-Fi worked well throughout my stay, and I particularly appreciated the complimentary coffee served in the morning.
The staff at the reception were all very nice and helpful.
The hotel also organizes walking tours for its guests. Unfortunately, I was unable to take part due to other commitments, but the programme looked quite interesting.
I would definitely stay at this hotel again on a future visit to New York and would happily recommend it to others.
It would have been nice to have a fridge in the room, although I understand that this is probably not realistic given the size and concept of the accommodation.

Nice, friendly, convenient place to stay.
Hotel was pretty clean and convenient, and also was sound proofed enough that the outside traffic was not audible from the room.
The staff was friendly and there is a really convenient cafe downstairs which has a quick breakfast.
I would definitely stay again.
Minor points to improve …
The platform of the bed had some hairs in the corner.
The air conditioner in the bedroom was really loud. It wasn’t too big of a deal bc the room maintained a temp of around 70 throughout the night so I could keep it off.

Clean Hotel, Beautiful Views, Poor Customer Experience
The room was very clean, and the hotel overall was well-maintained and spotless. I would especially like to praise the housekeeping staff, who were by far the friendliest and most pleasant people I encountered during my stay.
Coffee and tea were included in the room rate and available in the restaurant every morning.
However, the twin room with bunk beds was extremely narrow. In my opinion, it is suitable for one or two nights at most, especially if you are traveling without large luggage. Once a suitcase is opened, there is barely any space left to move around, and getting to the bathroom becomes quite difficult. The bathroom was also missing hooks for hanging towels.
Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was the service at the reception and in the restaurant. The reception area was very noisy, while the receptionist spoke extremely quietly, making communication quite difficult. I also felt that my request to pay with two different cards was treated as an inconvenience, which left me feeling unwelcome.
The rooftop terrace offers a beautiful view, which is definitely one of the hotel's highlights. However, my experience there was also disappointing. Following the instructions, I waited for a staff member to seat me, but after about 10 minutes no one came. When I finally stepped inside just to have a quick look and decide whether I wanted to sit there, I was almost immediately asked to leave.
I had a similar experience in the restaurant the following morning. We wanted to let the staff know our room number, but it seemed to be of no interest, and the interaction felt rather unfriendly. It was a shame because the hotel itself is very clean and in a great location. A warmer and more attentive approach from the staff would significantly improve the guest experience. It might be worth considering additional customer service and communication training for the team.
Overall, this is a very clean and well-maintained hotel, but the quality of service at the reception and in the restaurant unfortunately leaves a lot of room for improvement.

All the basic for a great value for money
Excellent location next to Grand Central and right in the midtown. Can'5t beat the price
Small rooms but you've got everything you need to rest after a long day in the city. Our initial room had a few noises overnight possibly from aircon and outside generator or similar, but the staff kindly moved us to another (better and more spacious) room

Pod39 Hotel Review
Pod39 is the perfect base for a New York stay. The location is unbeatable — right in Midtown, close to everything, yet tucked into a street that still feels local. The rooms are very small, but honestly so cleverly designed that nothing feels cramped. As a tall Dutch person, the bed was a bit short, but still comfortable enough after long city days.
Everything was spotless, every day. And the free coffee and tea in the lobby each morning is such a thoughtful touch — it sets the tone for the day.
What really makes Pod39 stand out is the staff. Everyone is friendly, but Jenae deserves a special mention: warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. There’s a sense of energy and freedom behind the reception desk that makes the whole place feel alive.
Highly recommended if you want efficiency, cleanliness, and a great vibe in a top location.

Bang for your buck, worth every penny!
Convenient location close to Grand Central Station and just a short walk to many landmarks including the Flatiron building, Empire State Building, NY Public Library, and Times Square.
No complaints at all.

I had a wonderful stay at Pod 39 — the location was perfect, convenient, and made exploring New York
I really liked the location of Pod 39 Hotel because it was very convenient and accessible. It’s close to many tourist spots like Grand Central Terminal, Times Square, and Bryant Park. The area also felt safe, lively, and easy to navigate, with restaurants, coffee shops, and transportation nearby. It made exploring New York very comfortable and enjoyable.

All the necessities with nice rooftop
Getting there/Location :
- Flew inout from LGA and took Q70+MTA. Took about 1h door to door.
- 5min walk to Grand Central
- 10 min walk to 34th Street & Ferry
- Citibike station at the corner
Hotel and Room:
- Wifi was good
- Shower was a good size and plenty of towels (body and hair) + hand towels
- Bed was comfortable
- Easy storage under the bed and clothes rack
- Luggage storage after checkout until 11pm-ish.
- The rooftop terrasse is great and the food and drinks are reasonably priced. It quiets down around 9pm.
- The staff was fantastic and attentive.
- Close to Trader joes and Target for snacks and late night errands.
There were no mini-fridge in the double pod. *For snackers, or kids to consider
If you walk everywhere, it's a calm location. It is 30min from Central Park, 1h to ANHM, 40 min to LES.
If you take public transit*, the main lines are about 10ish minutes walk away, to get to Grand Central most lines require a transfer up and downstairs and big stations. *Accessibility to consider

Nice location. Clean but a little small rooms. Kind staff. Would recommend.
Staff was kind and helpful. Complimentary water dispenser and coffee tea in the morning was good. The best thing was free guided walking tours.
The room was a little small. But every other aspect was good/great.

It suited our purposes well. Decently priced, big room, clean and in great location.
Excellent location, clean, good for two people. Bottom bunk was very low to floor, so a bit difficult to get out of. However, the price and location were excellent for NYC
The bed on lower bunk too low to floor. Difficult to get out of .

Very enjoyable - a nice little hub
Excellent location, and very friendly and helpful staff.
Room was very small but that’s probably quite standard for New York.

The room was tiny and exactly right for a busy weekend in NYC.
Great location, within walking distance of Grand Central Station. Room was clean and comfortable and the private bathroom was great. Free coffee in the morning was awesome. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful.
I love a good high flow shower, but the shower was possibly the wettest shower I have even been in. Not a bad really, just sort of challenging.

It all worked out well although high cost for such a small room
Staff was very friendly and helpful; location was excellent for what I needed; and a very clean room with all necessities. There is a rooftop bar and an Italian style restaurant.
Free coffee and tea in the morning.
The room was even smaller than expected from what was pictured. It felt walk-in closet size and did not warrant the cost per night.
