Expert reviews

CNN review:

“Though each suite has all the amenities that you’d find at home — kitchens, living spaces, work areas, and in some cases, private terraces — their shockingly bright color palette, quirky mid-century furniture and bold abstract art make it a stay you won’t soon forget.”

Absolute gem in the city at a great rate

I hesitate to share this as I want to make sure I can easily get a room next time I'm in the city. It's a great set up. Super central location and lots of breakfast options nearby. Loved the amenities. Staff were wonderful. It took me a while to realise I could use my phone/bluetooth to unlock the door which made the process even easier. Solo visit this time but I would bring my kids next time for sure. The Shakespeare downstairs was also great, staff went our of their way to make me feel welcome.

Overpriced with basic facilities

Good location in Midtown New York, close to Grand Central station. Staff are friendly and happy to assist with any queries checking in. Room is large with ensuite bathroom.

For the amount it cost to say there ($600+ per night), the value for money was terrible. The room is whitewashed concrete, so despite being large, it had no character and felt very soulless. My room also wasn't cleaned during my 2 night stay, and there was no breakfast or food service available in the hotel. There is a british pub below where you can buy lunch & dinner.

The place, the people, the location, everything was great!

Everything was perfect!

It’s difficult the entrance by the stairs, but it’s not a big problem.

Not my choice of place to stay on my next visit to New York.

Location was good, close to mid-town where my meetings were being held.

No room service. This was not clear at the time of booking. While I can make my bed, I did not appreciate having old coffee cups lying in the trash for 5 days. The room was on the third floor and therefore close to street level with the corresponding noise level.

My first time at William Sonder

I can’t say there was anything that stood out.

The raspberry and stark white color of my room was a bit manic for me. The bathroom shower was strange, lots of water spilling out because the glass was too small. The room easily collected smell as the ventilation was limited at best. The people at the front desk seemed checked out, although when I engaged they were nice. The bar was a joke and the front room was depressing with horrible artwork, think Edvard Munch but with less impact. On top of this, I paid dearly. I would look elsewhere.

Fabulous city hotel only 5 mins from Grand Central

Clean and tidy, large room, modern and loved the wardrobe with the light and mirror on the door. Lift to get luggage up and down. Large window and curtains blocked out the noise from outside. Very comfortable bed.

Could’ve done with some drawers, but this was the only thing missing.

Lovely location with spacious rooms

The rooms are extremely spacious by Manhattan standards, we had a triple room with a kitchenette and a lovely surprise was a balcony where we could sit with a drink and look over a very typical rooftop view. The location is very good, close to Midtown sights such as Empire State and Grand Central but with the quiet residential streets of Murray Hill behind. Closeness to Bryant Park was a plus. Reception staff were really helpful and responded to a couple of our requests almost instantly. The rooms had been refurbished quite recently so there was modern aircon and bathroom unlike many NY hotels that are in older buildings.

A fun, chic, well-run hotel in a convenient midtown location.

The William is my go to hotel in NYC. Very chic. Great location. Great staff. The washer/dryers on the third floor are a real plus, particularly when I stay there for more than one or two nights.

One does have to get used to the fact that the lobby also serves as the entrance to a speakeasy in the evening. However, on a positive note, the bartender does make great cocktails that you can take up to your room

Great central location, comfortable and very well-appointed hotel

The entrance level is all wood paneling, comfy sofas and dark-ish spaces; the room was modern, bright and very spacious. The bed was comfortable and there was excellent coffee and a fridge in the room. Everything was very clean. A nice small touch was that they provided a plate and cutlery for your takeaway meals. The staff was helpful and so kind. (I did not visit the restaurant and bar.)

Only one small thing: when you arrive the corridor to the reception desk is so dark that at first I thought was a bit creepy. It turned out not to be creepy at all, however; everyone was very nice and I enjoyed my stay there.

Good hotel worth it

Liked the hotel, small boutique and unpretentious. Clean. Accessibility good. Staff friendly, and helpful, but like a lot of small hotels lack a concierge with detailed knowledge. Popular bar consumes reception area and the noise may bother some, not me. For first time tourists I feel not ideal location. Would I stay there again, YES

Noise from the bar May bother some. Lack of knowledge re-restaurants and the like

A stylish, boutique hotel that still manages to be low-key, welcoming, and "attitude-free"...

Well appointed rooms, and a good size for NYC. Very central location, with easy access to subways. Very clean. Boutique and stylish, but without the attitude that usually comes with "boutique" and "stylish" places!

Exceptional

Large, colorful room in prime midtown for a reasonable rate. Excellent concierge at the front desk. There was a mistake with the original room we were given, which I noticed but didn’t mention, and they called to change and upgrade the room.

They charged me $100 extra? Could’ve gotten the room right to begin with. Apple TV didn’t work. All pretty minor things except the extra charge.

Beautiful boutique hotel in an amazing location, and great value for money.

The room was amazing and very big for the price we paid. The location is also incredible - it's located two blocks from Grand Central, a walk away from Times Square and major tourist attractions like the Empire State building and the Rockefeller Centre. The staff were very helpful and accommodating as well.

We didn't mind it, but if you are sensitive to noise, please be mindful that The William is the location of an incredibly popular bar called the Raines Law Room, which was almost fully occupied every night we stayed there. As a result there was often loud, thumping music from below (we did stay on the second floor, however). Furthermore, there was an unknown alarm sound that would not go away until the morning. If you are a heavy sleeper this isn't too much of an issue, but if you are awoken by noise than this might be an issue.

Good stay

The room was spacious and it had everything we needed. It was clean and the location was good. Very nice bathroom with rain shower.

The bed was not as comfortable as I had hoped. The windows did not block the street noise. But I guess that is what you get when staying in Manhattan.

Lovely stay in smaller boutique hotel in midtown.

Room bright and colorful with wall of windows. Bathroom new. Bed comfortable. Staff very helpful and friendly.

Lobby a bit dark. But the Law rooms charming in old fashioned way. Small slow elevator.

A comfortable stay in a chic new hotel in a very convenient location.

My husband and I stay often at the William. The Queen studio is 350 square feet, which is a nice size. It is newly decorated and chic. It is a huge plus that there are washer/dryers that guests can use. The neighborhood is great. So convenient to have a Tartinery and a Pret a Manger right around the corner. The Morgan Library is worth a visit. It is also an easy walk to Flatiron/Nomad.

At first it did seem odd to us that the lobby level is also the entrance to a speakeasy. However, once we got used to it, it was fine.

Fabulous

An cozy English Pub in the basement, a gilded age mansion on the main floor, and guest rooms that feel like the best of Ian Schrager, The William was a great find. Very cool and helpful front desk folks as well. Special shout out to Fabian (sp?), who quickly managed an issue I had with my room and, then again, accommodated my extended stay without a room change!

A very good deal on a fun chic hotel in a very convenient neighborhood.

We stayed in the Queen Studio with Kitchenette. The room is spacious and chic and clean and comfortable. The midtown location is very convenient. I loved having the Tartinery and also Pret A Manger right around the corner. Plenty of other good restaurants as well. I ended up staying one extra night, so the washer/dryers on the 3rd floor came in quite handy.

One does have to get used to the fact that the lobby level is mainly occupied by a speakeasy, so the lighting is very low. Once we got used to it, however, it didn't bother us at all.
