Expert reviews

CNN review:

“Though each suite has all the amenities that you’d find at home — kitchens, living spaces, work areas, and in some cases, private terraces — their shockingly bright color palette, quirky mid-century furniture and bold abstract art make it a stay you won’t soon forget.”

Photos online don't mislead

This hotel was unique and hard to fault in anyway. The photos online are a true & fair representation of what you get. They do not mislead. This is a keyless hotel (they provide access codes the day before). The rooms offer so much space which is hard to find in manhattan for such a reasonable price. (Obvs prices are subject to change but I paid around £900 for 4 nights for their best room). I also booked a room for friends that was a superior room but not the penthouse. That was around £800 for 4 nights and was equally spacious and comfortable. The rooms both had kitchens, bathrooms, good quality mattresses, dining tables and all the amenities you'd expect. There are large tvs with Roku & apps like Netflix etc. The hotel doesn't run like a regular hotel. There is no house keeping servive at all during your stay. This is actually not a big thing to me as I usually put a "do not disturb" sign on my door anyway when I'm in hotels. The front desk is manned all day and if you need extra towels or more coffee pods for your room then they are happy to provide you with as many as you want, every single day if you want it. The staff are super friendly and they even dropped me a text message after my first night to see if we had settled in OK and to check we was happy with the room I have been to New York more times than I can count, and this by far is the best accommodation I have ever found within my budget. Location is fantastic too.... walking distance to mist landmarks midtown. And 2 blocks away from Grand Central if you want the subway to travel further distances

Absolute gem in the city at a great rate

I hesitate to share this as I want to make sure I can easily get a room next time I'm in the city. It's a great set up. Super central location and lots of breakfast options nearby. Loved the amenities. Staff were wonderful. It took me a while to realise I could use my phone/bluetooth to unlock the door which made the process even easier. Solo visit this time but I would bring my kids next time for sure. The Shakespeare downstairs was also great, staff went our of their way to make me feel welcome.

Overpriced with basic facilities

Good location in Midtown New York, close to Grand Central station. Staff are friendly and happy to assist with any queries checking in. Room is large with ensuite bathroom.

For the amount it cost to say there ($600+ per night), the value for money was terrible. The room is whitewashed concrete, so despite being large, it had no character and felt very soulless. My room also wasn't cleaned during my 2 night stay, and there was no breakfast or food service available in the hotel. There is a british pub below where you can buy lunch & dinner.

Everything was perfect!

It’s difficult the entrance by the stairs, but it’s not a big problem.

Not my choice of place to stay on my next visit to New York.

Location was good, close to mid-town where my meetings were being held.

No room service. This was not clear at the time of booking. While I can make my bed, I did not appreciate having old coffee cups lying in the trash for 5 days. The room was on the third floor and therefore close to street level with the corresponding noise level.

My first time at William Sonder

I can’t say there was anything that stood out.

The raspberry and stark white color of my room was a bit manic for me. The bathroom shower was strange, lots of water spilling out because the glass was too small. The room easily collected smell as the ventilation was limited at best. The people at the front desk seemed checked out, although when I engaged they were nice. The bar was a joke and the front room was depressing with horrible artwork, think Edvard Munch but with less impact. On top of this, I paid dearly. I would look elsewhere.

Fabulous city hotel only 5 mins from Grand Central

Clean and tidy, large room, modern and loved the wardrobe with the light and mirror on the door. Lift to get luggage up and down. Large window and curtains blocked out the noise from outside. Very comfortable bed.

Could’ve done with some drawers, but this was the only thing missing.

There was a cool mix of eras in the building. the common areas and lounges were beautiful examples of bygone post prohibition cocktail lounges, while the room was a very contemporary and comfortable space. we loved it!

Very very poor, avoid.

The location is excellent, the bar downstairs looks lovely, but it is extremely expensive

Apologies for the wall of text about my stay at Sonder, but to summarise, avoid this hotel. I had read other reviews saying they treat people who book via Booking.com poorly, I can say at least for my stay I was treated appallingly. I received 19 separate emails from Sonder prior to my stay, including room codes for two separate rooms. As I was travelling from Ireland, and would not have network data when I arrived, I wrote both down. When I got to the hotel neither worked. We were stuck outside at 1am in the New York cold in March with no access to our hotel (they had told us late check in was OK). Eventually, luckily, someone else arrived back at the hotel and we got inside, but still no room access. One very expensive phone call to the number on the reception desk and we discovered our problem. They are changed our room, and therefore our log in codes, 2 hours before our check in time, while I was flying over the Atlantic ocean. To make it even better, our room, which we had prepaid for, was a downgrade. We choose our room specifically to have access to a kitchenette and a bigger space, which we did not get, so the premium price we paid was basically false advertising. The room we got was OK, nothing special, and the bed was dirty. Also, there is no housekeeping in this hotel, so if you are staying a few nights, that is an extra fee every time you want the bed changed etc. The issues continued from there, I went to reception 4 times to try and speak to a manager but only met people who cannot help me. I left phone numbers and emails and received zero contact, which is amazing as I currently have 37 emails from Booking.com and Sonder regarding my short stay, but nothing regarding my issues. I actually had other issues too, but avoid Sonder like the plague.

Will not be back; very dirty and no hotel service.

I stayed at this hotel about 20 times in the past. There is new ownership. There is no longer a doorman to help you carry bags up front of building to doors. The place was very dirty. There were bugs in my room and elevator, floor in room and hallways full of garbage. Odor in hallways. I called Sonder ( new owner) to complain about the issues. I had no maid service any day I was there. There are no more room keys. You must use a code for rooms and mine was broken. I always felt safe there. I didn’t feel safe standing alone at my door punching in code for a long time. You can no longer adjust temperature in the room. It was very hot. The shower water is not hot.it is Luke warm. There were many people in lobby complaining to someone at front desk. I guess it’s not a hotel any a longer. It’s a dirty room to AirB& B. There is no longer water or umbrella in room. I won’t be back. So unfortunate.

Great location, good value for $$ & huge room.

Great location, huge room (had the 2 bed studio) with seating area & kitchenette. beds comfy & decent sized bathroom with good shower pressure. Laundry facilities helpful too. Super friendly doorman.

Shower was slow draining, requested twice to have it cleared but either didn’t bother or it didn’t work. If you’re on level 2, above the bar, bring earplugs as you’ll need them. If not for the music, then for the noisy fridge & aircon. Communication with the hotel prior to arriving was poor despite their automated email asking you to let them know if you needed anything to ensure your stay with them was great.

Lovely location with spacious rooms

The rooms are extremely spacious by Manhattan standards, we had a triple room with a kitchenette and a lovely surprise was a balcony where we could sit with a drink and look over a very typical rooftop view. The location is very good, close to Midtown sights such as Empire State and Grand Central but with the quiet residential streets of Murray Hill behind. Closeness to Bryant Park was a plus. Reception staff were really helpful and responded to a couple of our requests almost instantly. The rooms had been refurbished quite recently so there was modern aircon and bathroom unlike many NY hotels that are in older buildings.

A fun, chic, well-run hotel in a convenient midtown location.

The William is my go to hotel in NYC. Very chic. Great location. Great staff. The washer/dryers on the third floor are a real plus, particularly when I stay there for more than one or two nights.

One does have to get used to the fact that the lobby also serves as the entrance to a speakeasy in the evening. However, on a positive note, the bartender does make great cocktails that you can take up to your room

Great central location, comfortable and very well-appointed hotel

The entrance level is all wood paneling, comfy sofas and dark-ish spaces; the room was modern, bright and very spacious. The bed was comfortable and there was excellent coffee and a fridge in the room. Everything was very clean. A nice small touch was that they provided a plate and cutlery for your takeaway meals. The staff was helpful and so kind. (I did not visit the restaurant and bar.)

Only one small thing: when you arrive the corridor to the reception desk is so dark that at first I thought was a bit creepy. It turned out not to be creepy at all, however; everyone was very nice and I enjoyed my stay there.

Nice Design, but poor service and not enough value for money

The location was pretty good. The wifi was stable. The size of the bathroom was good for a hotel room in New York. The design of the rooms was very modern, very nice.

We booked two rooms for three persons. The hotel was fully booked and they gave us one room in the 5th floor (they call it Penthouse...) and another in the 2nd floor despite me asking for both rooms on a lower floor 5 weeks ahead of arrival (my mom panics in an elevator, we wanted to use the stairs. The reason why I have chosen this hotel was because it has not many floors, hard to find in NYC). They said that they did not receive this message. Then the nightmare started, the rooms smelled like a sewer, the mini-fridge was so loud we couldnt sleep. Reception offered to change the rooms, however they kind of downgraded me to a smaller room and put me on a higher floor (6th floor). I was hoping that the smell and noise stops, but actually it did not as my room was now facing the back of the building with very loud airconditioning systems of other buildings. I know that NYC is not quiet, but this was too much. Plus, I had a small balcony (useless, no light, facing the back of buildings and loud), however the door did not lock, so actually it was open all the time. The balcony is shared with another room. In the 3rd night we got the info that they have to turn off the water in the entire hotel for maintenance and it is supposed to be back at 5am. (11pm-5am) Actually it was not back at 5am and when I turned off the water it came brown and green. The cold water was back at around 11am, the hot water was back at around 2:30pm. The employees on the reception desk had mixed attitudes - means some of them tried to do their best and some of them just did not care about. They kind of apologized but did not offer any compensation for the day where we had no water, not even a bottle of water to use to brush the teeth. On top, the room was clean on the surface, but under the bed I found an old bottle cap, I found some hair in the trash bin (was obviously not emptied). I would not come back to this hotel again, the nice design of the room can just not balance this poor experience.

Really noisy place

The location close to Grand Central is really good and within walking distance for many shops and sites. The deco is really nice and the beds are comfortable, room was clean and modern with a good size.

The room N0 1 on the street is incredibly noisy! (as much as it is probably the case for all the rooms on the street) You have an impression to sleep on the road because the windows are absolutely not sound-proof and not insulate at all. This is really incredible for an hotel of this category recently refurbished to have so poor quality windows. The air-con was also really noisy and you need to sleep with earplugs the whole time. Very disappointing!! Sad also not have been asked wether I had a good stay and not problem at check-out because I would certainly have signaled this to the lady in charge. There were parties and private functions every evening but that was not disturbing too much. Not having a restaurant for breakfast is also a negative point since visitors need to go out or bring food from outside.

the room was very clean and free from the city noise. Water and coffee machine in the room made my stay better. Staffs were very nice and did their best to give us the best experience. Luggage service was convenient too.

The location is fine, but not the best. It was walking distance from Bryant Park and Times Square, but I had to take public transportations to go to other spots like Central Park. I am not a big fan of the Bus or Subway so it was a bit disappointed.

Good hotel worth it

Liked the hotel, small boutique and unpretentious. Clean. Accessibility good. Staff friendly, and helpful, but like a lot of small hotels lack a concierge with detailed knowledge. Popular bar consumes reception area and the noise may bother some, not me. For first time tourists I feel not ideal location. Would I stay there again, YES
