The Hermitage Hotel, Nashville

231 6th Avenue N, Nashville, 37219, United States of America (show on map)

The Hermitage Hotel is a Nashville icon that first opened its doors in 1910. As the city’s last remaining grand Beaux-Arts commercial building, it was designed by Tennessee native James Edwin Ruthven Carpenter Jr. The hotel quickly became the center of local social and political life, even serving as the headquarters for both sides of the women’s suffrage movement during the final push to ratify the 19th Amendment in 1920.

Inside, the hotel is a treasure trove of architectural detail, featuring a spectacular hand-painted glass ceiling in the lobby and grand, marble-floored spaces. Perhaps its most eccentric claim to fame is its historic Art Deco men’s room, which was famously voted the “Best Restroom in America” for its striking lime-green and black glass tiles. Today, it remains a luxurious retreat, recently revitalized to blend its historic grandeur with modern comfort.

Food lovers will appreciate that the hotel now hosts dining concepts by Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, including the elegant *Drusie & Darr*. It remains deeply tied to Nashville’s identity, having hosted music legends like Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline over the decades.

Its location in downtown Nashville is perfect for sightseers. You are just a block away from the Tennessee State Capitol and a short stroll from the legendary Ryman Auditorium. Whether you are exploring the nearby Country Music Hall of Fame or catching live music on Broadway, the hotel provides a refined, historic anchor right in the middle of Music City’s excitement.

Expert reviews

Frommers review:

“Tennessee’s only five-star hotel nearly met the wrecking ball after falling into disrepair. Meticulously restored to its full glory in 2003, this Downtown hotel, a Beaux-Arts gem that first opened in 1910,  attracts a decidedly upscale clientele that includes heads of state, celebrities, and business magnates.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Nashville.

New York Times review:

“The Hermitage Hotel, long considered one of Tennessee’s best hotels, recently renovated its landmark Beaux-Arts building, which has two fine-dining restaurants, a bar and a stunning lobby.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Nashville.

Fodors review:

“The Hermitage Hotel is a quintessential Nashville experience for both guests and all Nashville travelers alike. With former guests ranging from Babe Ruth and John F. Kennedy to Pasty Cline and Johnny Cash, quality service and an elevated experience are a given.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Nashville.

Lonely Planet review:

“Nashville’s first million-dollar hotel was a hit with the socialites when it opened in 1910. The beaux-arts lobby feels like a czar’s palace, every surface covered in rich tapestries and ornate carvings.”

Telegraph review:

“The Hermitage, which opened in 1910, is Nashville’s most storied hotel. If there’s a tale to tell about a president visiting Music City or legislation being debated all night long at the nearby Capitol there’s likely a Hermitage connection. These days the hotel is all about old-world charm with new-world convenience.”

Aside from the checkout experience, we were otherwise happy with our stay.

Our checkout experience was extremely poor. Since we had a flight at 7:00 AM, we left the hotel at 5:00 AM. Despite being such a high-end property, there was only one staff member available. When we arrived at the front desk, he told us the system was already closed and that he couldn’t review the documents, even though I had not yet been able to check or confirm the extra charges.

Because he was the only person working, he then left to retrieve our car. Meanwhile, we realized that we had forgotten our bag inside the hotel. As the doors were locked, I was unable to re-enter the property to retrieve it. We repeatedly called the hotel and rang the bell multiple times, and in the process of trying not to leave our belongings behind, we were at risk of missing our flight.

It is absolutely unacceptable for a property of this level that guests cannot re-enter the hotel for nearly 20 minutes—especially considering that my passport was still inside the lobby, as I wasn’t even sure whether the checkout process had been properly completed.

Additionally, I had ordered balloons as a surprise for my sister’s birthday. On one document, the charge was around $185, while on another it was over $200. I cannot understand how balloons could cost a total of $385–400.

It is also very concerning that a single staff member was responsible for valet, checkout, and door duties all at once in such an expensive, five-star hotel.

Great location, some flaws were difficult to overlook.

The room was lovely, good view. Housekeeping staff worked their magic exceptionally well every day 11 / 10. The door staff are very helpful with tips about the locality. The restaurant is good and the downstairs bar is a lovely place to hang out. The cafe food comes from the same kitchen and is high standard. The lobby is beautiful and comfortable. Front desk were great.

The lack of tea and coffee making facilities in the room is a big oversight. Quite difficult to order afternoon tea in the lobby. Some of the staff dropped the ball a number of times. The noise through the door of the adjoining room was only slightly annoying.

Best choice in Nashville!

We had an absolutely fantastic stay at the Nashville Hermitage Hotel. Everything exceeded our expectations. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, making us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The location couldn't be better—right in the heart of the city, making it easy to explore. Dining in-house was also a highlight, with delicious food and great service. Overall, we couldn’t have been happier and would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Nashville!

This is a classy establishment. Great attention to detail.

This is one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in. I have traveled the world and in my opinion, considering the competitive price, this is right up there with the best of them. I will definitely stay here again.

This hotel was the highlight of our Deep South Tour, we loved it!

We were excited to visit this heritage hotel and we were not disappointed. It is in a very central position a short walk from most of the downtown attractions. The public areas are absolutely beautiful, all the staff from the valet and door staff to the reception team and housekeeping were courteous and friendly. There was a plentiful supply of bottled water both in the room and at reception which was most welcome in the heat. We had booked a Grand Deluxe King room which was spacious with double aspect windows looking toward the Capitol Building, the bathroom amenities were plentiful, we could not have asked for a more perfect place to stay in Nashville

Fabulous location but be prepared for the bill

Breakfast at the hotel was average. Room and the view we had amazing. Restaurant great but pricey and a glass of champagne made our eyes water and was a bit of a surprise!

Price of the drinks and breakfast were a bit over the top compared to other high quality hotels that we have stayed at.

Christmas break across America

Lovely, elegant hotel. Rooms gorgeous and well presented. Very comfortable and beautifully decorated for Christmas. Great location. Everything within walking distance

I worked hard for this trip and occassionally got looks from staff, as I am not elegantly dressed etc. Housekeeping kept knocking on door even though privacy sign was up. Also on day of check out housekeeping came 3 times to see if I have left amd asked when was I going. First was 8 am so good job I wasn't wanting a lie in. I told her 3 times I was going about 10-10.30. I have worked as a student in high end hotels. When a guest checks out, reception then alert housekeeping. We wouldn't harrass guests.

I requested reception if they could call a taxi for me, initial reply was don't you have uber? No I don't. In Enfland we preger to use proper taxi conpanies..... Attitude put a bit of a cloud over my stay, but it was lovely and the staff in cafe polite and helpful. Great food.

Impeccable luxury with friendly vibe.

We got an upgrade so I am possibly biased but this is one of the best hotels my husband and I have stayed in after a lifetime of worldwide travel. The staff were exceptionally pleasant and helpful. When we needed a late bar snack after an evening on Broadway the bar tender headed to the kitchen to see what was available. (And the pizza was delicious!) great bed with choice of pillows and top notch linen. Molten Brown toiletries. The building itself is beautiful.

The only thing I would add is an ability to make a cup of early morning tea/coffee in the room. And if they could flatten the hill on the walk up from Broadway that would be helpful!

Great traditional yet modern hotel near all the sights

Great location and beautiful hotel - lots of history to this hotel and it has been beautifully renovation. Has a traditional feel with service standards to match - good old fashioned personalised service. The staff are excellent and nothing is too much to ask of them. Great housekeeping team. Good value on the rates we got on Booking.com.

Really surprised that there is no coffee machine or tea kettle in the room so no way to make coffee or tea for yourselves in the morning. There is a cafe downstairs with free hot drinks for residents but you have to get up and dressed before your first hot drink of the day.
