Lonely Planet review:

“The Gran Hotel flaunts the French art nouveau style of the pre-revolution era. Crowned by a stained-glass canopy crafted by Tiffany in 1908, the atrium is a fin de siècle fantasy of curved balconies, wrought-iron elevators and chirping birds in giant cages. Rooms do not disappoint in comparison.”

What guests liked

All you need to know

Gran Hotel Ciudad de México offers a modern and elegant stay along with breathtaking views of the main plaza to the guests. This 5-star hotel is located in the heart of the city, close to many famous attractions. Once you step into the hotel, you’ll be surprised to see the beautiful historic architecture that is aesthetically pleasing combined with the world-class service. You can book a room or a suite depending on your liking and budget. All the rooms feature air conditioning, free WiFi, a TV, a desk, and an attached bathroom with a panoramic mirror.

The building was originally built in 1526 as a residence of the Royal Accountant. In 1895, it was turned into a shopping center – the first ever in Mexico. Finally, in 1968, it was inaugurated as a hotel representing a unique cultural heritage that is worth exploring. One major highlight of the hotel is its Tiffany-style stained glass window, which is said to be one of the four largest windows in the world.

The hotel also houses one of the best restaurants in Mexico City, La Terraza Restaurant, located on the 5th floor. This restaurant offers finger-licking good cuisine through their exclusive a la carte menus. The Metropolitan Cathedral and the Presidential Palace are located within walking distance of the hotel. The spectacular Castillo de Chapultepec gardens are also located nearby – just a short drive away. While you admire the interior of the hotel and its services, don’t miss capturing the breathtaking views of Zócalo Plaza from the rooftop.

A cut above. A special treat.

Spectacular setting. Lobby extraordinary. Service staff kind, courteous and helpful. Very clean. Room decor outstanding.

Outside noises quite annoying at times, including early in the morning.

Unique Experience

the hotel is a work of art itself and the staff is very friendly.

The bed was not clean, it even had human hair on it. However, the staff promptly came to change it. I hope they can improve their quality check for cleanliness.

Fantastic!

We loved staying at the Gran Hotel. The rooms were comfortable and the common areas very enjoyable (the gym, lobby, snack room). Our family of eight had a marvelous visit. The entire staff was incredibly kind and helpful.

Beautiful hotel, excellent location, great stay overall

Excellent location

We stayed in a Zocalo view room and didn’t sleep for 3 nights. Quiet during the day but seemed to be renovations happening at night - hammering and drilling all night long.

Great historic hotel you must visit

We liked the proximity of the hotel to the Zocalo. Nice restaurant overlooking the Zocalo. Room was large and very comfortable. Staff at restaurant were very accommodating to my wife's dairy allergy.

Nothing.

Truly delightful 5 night stay in the historic center of Mexico City.

We loved the old world charm and elegance. The location is excellent and the lovely top floor restaurant overlooking Plaza Major was wonderful.

The ground floor coffee maker was good but had a low capacity of water, needing frequent refilling of the reservoir, so instructions would be helpful. We loved our early morning coffees there and the array of tiny snacks. It is a treasure, one other high end hotels do not have. I hope they never abandon it.

Home away from home

Often, the value of actual hospitality is underrated in the hospitality industry, and it's overshadowed by fancy facilities and frills. Not at Gran Hotel, where the staff treats you like their own guest. They are warm and will go out of their way to help you out. Oh, and the hotel itself is a heritage site with exceptional facilities & a location to kill for! Absolute, must visit. If I am ever in Mexico City again, I am staying at Gran for sure.

The Gran Hotel Ciudad Mexico will not disappoint you.

It started with a warm welcome and a little history of the as we made our way to our room via its historic elevator, the first one in Mexico City. This wonderfully storied hotel has been updated to include windows blocking much of the sound from the ever-interesting but often lively Zocolo below. Room 203 is a well-appointed Master Suite with a great view of the action and lots of room. The living room provided the perfect place to enjoy the therapeutic massage the concierge arranged. We enjoyed the sumptuous and interesting breakfast on the rooftop terrace with a magnificent view of the historic rooftops surrounding the Zocolo. The hotel's dedicated taxi drivers could not have been more helpful.

An Elegant and Comfortable Historic Hotel

Beautiful old hotel in Centro, near Aztec ruins. Exquisite interior and large rooms. Elegant. The staff was highly professional and helpful.

We stayed during the Christmas break and there were constant festivals and massive crowds. Streets were blocked off so Ubers could not reach the hotel. I would stay elsewhere during this period.

I would stay here again.

Beautiful historical property in Centro Mexico City. Loved that! Loved the fact that it’s been in James Bond movies as well as other movies. Loved the fact that it’s in the middle of everything. Our room was massive, we liked that. Upon check in, the young lady at the front desk was exceptional and offered wonderful service upon check in. We absolutely loved the breakfast buffet on the 4th floor. Delicious and fresh.

The only thing I did not like was that my room key was somehow deactivated. This is not a huge problem for me. What was a problem, was the girl at the front desk was rude and made a rude face when I asked her for help. This was a completely different girl than the one who checked us in. This girl should not be working in a fine hotel.

Stay was excellent. I was able to cool down room by opening windows. Just not ideal.

Most things about hotel were great

The room was too hot for us. Air Conditioner worked but obviously not required much. So long as a warm room was desired it would be great. We will return and hope weather is cooler!

Absolutely wonderful!

I treated myself to three nights in GHCdM at the start of my three weeks visit to Mexico and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Wonderful views over Zocalo added enormously to my enjoyment of a memorable visit. Special thanks to Daniella and Gustavo who provided me with a very warm welcome when I arrived in the early hours on a Monday morning. Gustavo took care of my luggage and helped me on my way when I set off on my early morning sightseeing. Daniella provided me with lots of useful information and helped me to have coffee and snacks in the 24-hour guest area and was also very helpful when I checked out after three delightful nights. Muchas gracias Daniella and Gustavo. A few practical points about visiting Mexico City. If you want to visit Casa Azul/Museo Frida Kahlo in Coyocacan you will need to book tickets online weeks, if not months, in advance. Museo Casa de Leon Trotsky is Visiting Palacio Nacional entails registering at 10.00 [arrive no later than 09.30 to be sure of gaining entry] at Haciendaes Patrimonio in Calle Moneda to join an English speaking tour at 10.30.

Exceptional

This is an absolutely splendid hotel with huge beautiful rooms, comfortable beds, large bathrooms, and an excellent open-air restaurant with stunning views. The food is excellent and the breakfast will spoil you for life. The staff is attentive and extremely professional, and they all seem to speak perfect English. Kudos all around. I will be back.

Absolutely nothing.
