Velvet Hotel, Manchester

2 Canal Street, Manchester, M1 3HE, United Kingdom. (show on map)

The Velvet Hotel is a stylish boutique gem located right in the heart of Manchester’s vibrant Canal Street. Opened in 2009, the property occupies the upper floors of a building that has long been a local nightlife institution, perched directly above the famous Velvet Bar and restaurant.

What makes the hotel particularly unique is its design ethos; each of its rooms and signature penthouses is individually decorated, blending bohemian, industrial, and Edwardian influences. It offers a decadent, “plush” feel that aims to be a retreat from the lively energy of the surrounding area. A quirky highlight is the entrance, where guests can take a “walk of faith” across a glass-covered fish tank set into the stairs.

The hotel is perfectly positioned for those wanting to explore the city’s cultural and social scene. It sits just a short five-minute stroll from Piccadilly Railway Station, making it incredibly accessible for travelers. Whether you are looking for nightlife or a central base for sightseeing, you are within walking distance of key attractions like the Palace Theatre and the various bars and eateries of the city centre.

For those interested in local history and culture, you are also well-placed to explore Manchester’s industrial heritage or visit major nearby sites like the National Football Museum. The hotel’s canal-side location offers a scenic backdrop, capturing the authentic spirit of a city that was once the beating heart of the Industrial Revolution.

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“Nineteen beautiful bespoke rooms each oozing style: there’s the sleigh bed in room 24, the double bath of room 34, the saucy framed photographs of a stripped-down David Beckham (this is Gay Village, after all!). Despite the tantalising decor and location, this is not an exclusive hotel and is as popular with straight visitors as it is with the same-sex crowd.”

Telegraph review:

“On Manchester’s vibrant Canal Street in the city’s Gay Village, Velvet Hotel is an unashamedly grand boutique option with individually styled rooms. The buzzy bar is a great place to start an evening out and, if you’re embracing the local nightlife, a discounted clubbing package is available including a bottle of fizz.”

Nice but noisy

Rooms lovely

Room 204 was very noisy. I expected some noise due to location however there was some kind of unit under our window which made a noise every few minutes and was impossible to sleep through

Very smart and comfortable hotel in the gay quarter

Very smart hotel in the middle of the gay district of Manchester, so very central and well located by the canal. Nice bar in the hotel and plenty of entertainment nearby. My room was very well appointed and comfortable.

Breakfast was only continental and had to be taken in your room.

Would stay again

Excellent location, clean, newly refurbished room.

Check in process was long. We happened to arrive at the same time as a few of the bookings though.

Lift wasn’t working so had to carry luggage up stairs.

Great comfortable bed, very clean room and luxury bath products

Good location, very central to City centre. Rooms were comfy and staff very friendly.

The only issue was that it was a little bit noisy on one of the nights stay, but it was a Saturday so you might expect that from somewhere so central.

Pleasant stay, fully recommend

Rooms were very tidy and clean, staff were friendly and helpful at check-in. Bath was massive and fantastic! Style of rooms were very pleasant and unique. Would definitely come again.

The only issue I had was the number of emails prior to my arrival prompting me to pay for an upgrade. I understand why they were sent but the sheer amount was bordering on spam and pestering.

Stunning hotel, optimum location

Beautiful boutique hotel located along the canal, a stones throw from the train station. Stunning decor and design... I was welcomed with a 'Kylie Minogue' prosecco rose on arrival whilst checking in (very nice). Furthermore pleasantly surprised to find myself in the gay district which was quaintly decorated with fairy lights and rainbow bunting down the lane. The hustle and bustle on the streets was warm and friendly.

only downside was the student night at a bar next door, which was pretty loud. However I managed to get off to sleep, and it won't stop me staying here again. A gorgeous hotel in an optimum location.

Good value hotel in prime location. Better for couples than families.

Great location right on lively canal street (though with the expected noise to go with it). Luxurious rooms and comfortable beds.

Bistro was closed for refurbishment without prior warning or notification. Thankfully plenty of good restaurants within walking distance.
As others have commented rooms are not well sound proofed so when other guests decide to play party music late at night, everyone hears it. Staff should be on top of that more.

Good value - loved the location staff were great. Would we stay again, if it was our only option yes, but I’d probably l

Location was great, decor was fabulous staff were super polite and accommodating

The place was a smidge tired, the colours are rich in the hotel so unfortunately show the marks up more. There was a smell of smoke in our room, assuming someone used the balcony to smoke and it drifted back in so be mindful when booking a balcony room. We were fully aware of the location and it being above a club. So you can expect to hear and feel the bass of the club.

Good location, nice staff and perfectly passable. quite loud at night and not the cleanest.

Great location, really central and in a bustling area. Couldn’t fault this or the staff, welcoming and helpful.

Wasn’t very clean at all, stains all over the sofa and duvet. Was dusty in the room too. Just felt a bit grubby. The lift wasn’t working either, so had to carry bags up 3 flights of stairs, overall just didn’t feel premium, considering the price.

Pleasant area, nice room and friendly staff

I like that each individual room is different. Plus the room we were in was a good size and I liked the features.

The walls a thin so could hear next doors tv in the morning. The fridge was making a loud hum until we pulled it out slightly to stop the sound other than that everything was good

Not a good experience

Location was fab

Decor was tired, and it wasn’t the cleanest, we had B&B. But we weren’t told it wasn’t a proper breakfast, got delivered crap continental breakfast to room first morning, which was 30 minutes later than we asked for
The whole lot was put back outside the room in the corridor and we cancelled breakfast 2nd morning, that’s how poor it was. We ended up having breakfast each day outside at extra cost so please book room only x

Comfortable and excellent rooms and right in the centre of everything.

Was on time brought to the room and was great

When went to check-in was then told that I have to pay an extra 100 pounds on the credit card.
For the minibar and sweets and chocolate Skittles but wasn't aware of any charge at the time of booking.
I had been having problems with my credit card all day.
And after paying nearly 200 pounds for the room, they wanted another 100
It didn't mind, but my card wasn't working again.trying to pay cash even offered to pay £200 until I could get my card sorted from my bank, when I came back from the gig, which I was already late for
But they would not allow me to access the room
With my bags, so couldn't freshen up. And missed the first hour of the Richard ashcroft concert which was not very happy about
When I raised the question about why wasn't I told about the extra charge?Five minutes later received mister bean 3 different emails about the charge all of a sudden.
But the receptionist was very pleasant with may, even though I was
Possibly quite rude, which I was very sorry about.
But got it sorted in the end. And had a lovely time in manchester. The hotel is an exceptional

Fine but definitely not deserving of 4 star rating

Friendly staff, great location

Large windows with blinds that didn’t fit properly so very light in room early in the window. Enormous bath but was not clean. On the third floor and lifts were broken.

Fantastic, great customer service will defiantly stay again!! 5*

Overall, room was fantastic bed comfortable, staff great. the front of house team brilliant. especially the young lady who check us in. My room was up graded that was great and the glass of prosecco plus my birthday card was a touch of class.
Thank you all for a wonderful birthday. It was so sad the restaurant was closed. Continental breakfast not my thing. However, the Mrs loved it. lol.

No, hot breakfast but that just myself picking also could hear the music from the other bars. But we managed to get to sleep so was not to bad. If we we're a bit younger we would have had a fantastic few days parting lol.

Great stay little underwhelming as had a great stay previously !

Close to centre and amongst the night life

For the price it was very underwhelming . Staff were lovely but the room was not clean and sheets were dirty . Sink was dirty . We stayed in 2 different room for the 2 nights and both rooms weren’t up to the usual standard .

Good place for a night or two.

The property is very central, clean and staff were extremely friendly.

The room itself was dark, and sound proofing from the rooms around needs looked at.

Great Room and a cute boutique hotel.

The room was very nice. The Continental breakfast was good. Staff was so-so.

The staff could have been more helpful. The person at the check-in had very limited English. The room was right next to a disco. Without a white noise machine we travel with, sleep would have been impossible.
