The Cow Hollow Hotel, Manchester

57 Newton Street Northern Quarter, Manchester, M1 1ET, United Kingdom. (show on map)

Expert reviews

The Guardian review:

“Its own way this boutique hotel is doing something that feels fresh and honest, true to the Northern Quarter’s historic zest for originality. In the wider context of Manchester city centre, which lacks interesting, independent stays, it is a find.”

Telegraph review:

“This hip new addition to Manchester’s Northern Quarter knows how to treat its guests with hi-spec interiors and plenty of treats – including free prosecco and nibbles, Netflix in all rooms and milk and cookies before bed. Many original features have been retained from the former textile warehouse it occupies, too.”

Exceptional

Friendly check in, lovely bonus perks like prosecco and milk and cookie. The bed was absolutely divine, would love to know the make or the pillows and mattress

It was a little bit too dark to be able to get ready, and the room was too warm (we turned off the radiator but it took a while to cool the room down)

Quirky hotel in the heart of the northern quarter

Quiet property in the northern quarter. It offered breakfast in our room and Prosecco and nibbles in the evening

Room was in the basement and very small. No ventilation in the bathroom

Mind-blowingly amazing!!

oh my god this place is amazing! i was upset when i my boyfriend recommended it when i was stranded in manchester because it wasn’t close to the airport (it’s downtown and a short walk to Picadilly), so i had to pay the taxi fee to get there and back - but honestly i have spent over $300 for hotels with less charm and amenities than this place! First off, it looks like a hole in the wall but it is BEAUTIFUL- second off they handed me a complimentary glass of prosecco when i stepped in, delivered cookies and milk in the evening to my room (who does that??), delivers EXCELLENT breakfast to the room in the morning (no extra charge for breakfast or delivery!), has ear plugs and slippers, and had a fantastic list of recommended restaurants. Like, this is better than other 5 star hotels i’ve been at - and it was a third of the price??? Dude… The room was a little small (so be aware if you’re used to huge rooms), but seriously it was absolutely perfect. Turned my travel hell into heaven and was the little paradise I needed.

Such a lovely little place. All the staff were friendly and couldn't do enough. So many thoughtful little extras. The room was small but perfect. Do much thought has gone into every element! Literally cannot find a single fault!

Fantastic and unique hotel in an amazing/central part of Manchester

An amazing staff that went above and beyond. The room and the hotel is not a stale and standard big brand hotel - it is really cozy, and unique. We were really impressed and loved the vibe. They had lots of extra perks like good room service, amenities and cocktails. We will for sure be staying again!

Beautiful hotel with great little touches!

The service was excellent- the staff couldn't do enough for us. The little extras, like the complimentary prosecco and nibbles was a lovely touch. The hotel is gorgeous and a perfect central location.

The room was slightly noisy and small, but that was expected.

An awesome and chilled oasis 8 minutes walk from all the action.

The staff are like gurus. The vibe of the whole place is awesome. A chilled oasis in the city.

Room was quite small. Lack of storage space or anywhere to put your stuff. A light above the mirror. Sorry. None of this is complaining at all but these things would make it perfect.

The hotel was gorgeous and stylish. The staff were so lovely too and always happy to help. We really enjoyed sitting at the bar and chatting with the barman! The complementary cookies and milk before bed and the lovely breakfast in bed topped off our already fab stay! Great location and the bed was really comfy too. A lovely stay :)

Very good

Very pleasant staff, the place looks nice, it is clean, location was ideal for me. Breakfast tasty.

The room is tiny. There is no space to put your bag or your clothes, no storage whatsoever. You get a bed and that's it. You also cant just sit down in your room, there is no table, chair. I also did not enjoy the lukewarm water from the shower, both flow and temperature are severely limited. If you are asking top dollar for your room my expectations are going to be at a high level too.

Car park 5 mins walk which is not bad for city centre... breakfast options good and very nicely presented, delivered to room as per timed request .. we will definitely stay again.

Shower temp was only tepid .

This hotel has thought about every small detail! Feels personal! Best city stay I have had’

Literally this place thinks of everything! Stayed in the suite, it was spotless, large bathroom, amazing staff, coming back at 2300 and being offered hot chocs and cookies was just such a lovely touch! Unlimited hot drinks, and breakfast delivered to the room! A lovely lovely stay!

Very good

The hotel was very well decorated and, clean with good facilities and nice touches of free prosecco and nibbles between a certain time, no tea and coffee facilities in the room but you can help yourself from an area near the reception. We had a couple of small issues that the staff couldn't do enough to help. The General manager Gemma was exceptionally helpful and dealt with the issues very swiftly. You have a small choice to choose from for breakfast which gets delivered to your room at your chosen time, nicely presented with juice and fruit.

All I would say is that some of the rooms are quite small, but if staying for 1 night is perfectly fine, but if staying for more than that I would recommend choosing the larger room.

Very good

We loved this boutique hotel. Staff were so lovely and kind. The decor was fab and the little touches sold it for us. As woman who continues to forget a hairdryer, they not only had that covered but also straighteners and curlers in the room! It’s in walking distances of lots of good bars/restaurants.

Our only criticism would be the shower pressure and noise, but they do specify about why the shower pressure is how it is and the noise couldn’t be helped.

Overal, the hotel is perfect for a short stay.

The hotel is in a brilliant location with everything you need right on your door step. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The design of the hotel was very nice and a bonus point for all the little extras you get when staying in the hotel.

Nothing at all, the only issue is they don’t do food which I understand as it is only a small hotel, but when you just want a quick bite to eat it’s not great. However, you are able to order food to the hotel so not that big of a deal.

Super charming hotel

Really stylishly renovated old building, super charming. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. Excellent location, close to the train station and to the lively areas of Manchester.

Rooms are tiny and walls are thin. Guess that's the downside of using such an old warehouse building for a hotel.

Great staff and gorgeous little hotel make for a memorable break

Staff were superb - friendly, helpful and approachable. The hotel is part of an old engineering works and showcases many aspects of this.

Room 16 would be ok for a couple of days, but not longer term as there is limited space for storage and regular movement.

This is the second time I have stayed at the Cow & Hollow - I will definitely come back!

Loved that the breakfast was brought to your room. The rooms only have 3 coat hangers in there to hang clothes. Staff were all exceptionally friendly.

No coffee / tea facilities in room.

A level of luxury that exceeded my expectations

The hotel was absolutely unreal. I saw from the website how gorgeous the interior of the hotel was so I was very excited to book it for my boyfriend’s birthday. Little did I know the hotel would exceed my expectations. The attention to detail, the complimentary touches from free hot drinks, glass of Prosecco and nibbles, cookies and milk before bed to the breakfast it bed was amazing! The thought that has gone into the hotel is sensational and we loved the recommendations of places to go leaflet in the room and that you could request slippers which just adds that extra level of comfort and luxury to your stay. I would highly recommend anyone to stay here :)

That I didn’t book more nights to stay!

Exceptional

We loved the room, the bed was super comfortable and the room was spacious. The TV includes most popular streaming services which is something I now feel is a necessity. The breakfast, which is included as part of your stay, is great: I had the continental which includes a granola yoghurt, a banana, a pastry, an orange juice and a coffee. My husband had a cheese omelette, a banana, orange juice and coffee. The location is spot on, you are in the heart of the Northern Quarter which has some amazing bars, cafes and restaurants and you’re not far from the main shopping area. There is quite a few parking locations close to the hotel and we found one for only £14 for 24hrs which was the cheapest we saw. The staff are super friendly and welcoming and couldn’t be more helpful. We loved our stay!

I think our our only gripe is that when people walk up and down the stairs it’s SO loud because of the design of the hotel. The hotel does provide ear plugs which I heavily suggest using.

A welcoming, comfortable bolthole in Manchester City Centre.

From the minute we arrived at the hotel to the moment we left, we were made to feel very welcome and at home by the lovely, welcoming and attentive staff. The hotel is beautifully decorated and the bed exceptionally comfortable with quality linens, duvets and feather pillows. We loved the complimentary fizz and snacks, coffee and breakfast. The hotel is well placed for Manchester’s Northern Quarter and Ancoats with lots of great bars and restaurants on the doorstep. We were also very grateful that the hotel allowed us to change the date of our stay because of snow, even though we had booked a non cancellable/amendable rate. We will most definitely be returning when we next need a bolthole in Manchester City Centre.

The shower pressure was weak but that is part of the building’s eco friendly system and certainly did not cause any problems. The room was very small but perfect for an overnight stay.
