The Savoy, London

The Savoy Hotel, Strand, London WC2R 0EZ, United Kingdom (show on map)

The Savoy, which opened on the Strand in 1889, is one of London’s most legendary luxury hotels. Built by theatrical impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte with profits from his Gilbert and Sullivan opera productions, it was designed by architect Thomas Edward Collcutt. The hotel stands on the site of the former medieval Savoy Palace and has been a pioneer in hospitality innovation since its inception.

It holds several historic “firsts” in Britain, including being the first hotel to feature electric lights throughout, electric lifts, and en-suite bathrooms in most rooms. The hotel also has an eccentric, century-old tradition: “Kaspar,” a two-foot-tall Art Deco cat statue, is brought to the table when a group of 13 dines together to ward off the superstition that the first person to stand up from such a party will face misfortune.

Beyond its walls, the hotel is a neighbor to the vibrant Covent Garden district and the historic Somerset House. Guests are just a short walk from the bustling West End theatres, the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square, and the scenic Thames Embankment.

The Savoy’s storied history has attracted icons like Claude Monet—who painted views of the Thames from his suite—and Marilyn Monroe. Whether you are exploring nearby museums or enjoying a classic afternoon tea, the hotel remains a quintessential London landmark that perfectly bridges the gap between Edwardian grandeur and Art Deco elegance.

Expert reviews

CNN review:

“Perfectly located for the shops of Covent Garden and the cinemas of Leicester Square, The Savoy was Marilyn Monroe’s London hotel of choice and, if you can stretch to the £400-plus nightly fee, it can to become yours.”

Fodors review:

“The Savoy is a landmark structure deeply connected to London with a rich, glamorous history that tends to rub off on its guests. A favorite of Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and Charlie Chaplin, this grandest of grand dames is one of London’s oldest luxury hotels and might justifiably be called its finest.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in London.

Forbes review:

“Opened in 1889 as the first truly high-end hotel in Britain, The Savoy has been at the forefront of decadence ever since, having introduced a series of mod cons ranging from electric lighting to hot running water, en suite bathrooms to air-conditioning.”

Telegraph review:

“There is something deeply reassuring about The Savoy. In a world of constant change, the hotel retains a tangible sense of tradition, and its restaurants, among them the Gordon Ramsay-affiliated Savoy Grill and Simpson’s-in-the-Strand, maintain consistently high standards.”

World class Iconic Hotel, with world class service.. ell done team Savoy we will be back soon!!

The staff are amazing, from the moment you arrive the welcome from the Doormen Genci and Rob treat you like a returning member of the family. Beautiful classy room, with the most comfortable beds and it was immaculately clean. The American bar is iconic and staff are brilliant and the best breakfast in London with again lovely service from Rosalina and Leo.
The Customer relations team were so attentive and in regular touch to ensure we were having a special time
We stayed for a four night stay to celebrate a family birthday and whilst not the cheapest Hotel in London is worth every penny for a special treat .. no one does it better!

Nothing … maybe the wardrobe space could have been slightly bigger

Enjoyed the friendlness but professionalism on entering hotel. Lovely Art Deco vibe.

Bed comfy and facilities in it good even though we were at the far end of corridor. Did hear 6am noise each morning outside but suppose that can't be helped in busy city.

Nothing anything would be picky. Pity Reading Room closed at 5.00. Nice room to crash when you've been out an don't want to go to room immediately and other than main foyer area there was no where else for a pit stop.

Overnight stay at The Savoy

The hotel was exceptional. The decor was classy and elegant without being pretentious.

All of the staff we met were polite, professional and very friendly.

The American bar and the cocktails they serve are a must for anyone visiting.

We loved our overnight stay.

When we arrived there was only one member of the reception team, meaning we had over a 10 minute wait to be seen.

Although our room was lovely I woke up with a backache and the hubby had a stiff neck from the pillows.

Generally superb and spa lovely

Everything generally great and staff excellent.

The breakfast arrangements were archaic and awkward with so many items attracting extra payments even after the £45 prepaid breakfast rate. Definitely needs a major overhaul asap.

Büyüleyici manzara, kusursuz hizmet ve eşsiz atmosfer—Savoy her anlamda mükemmeldi

Our stay at The Savoy exceeded all our expectations.
The elegance of our room and the breathtaking view were truly remarkable.

The hotel perfectly blends its rich historical heritage with modern luxury, creating a unique atmosphere.
However, what impressed us the most was the exceptional professionalism and genuine care of the staff — we felt truly valued at every moment.

The level of service, attention to detail, and commitment to guest satisfaction were outstanding.
The Savoy is not just a place to stay, but a truly unforgettable experience.

We brought our dog and we were welcomed throughout our stay

It was quite difficult to drive to as the roadworks blocked nearby roads

Beautiful hotel, charming staff.

Staff were charming throughout the hotel. The welcome was warm and inclusive. The hotel was immaculate, our room was spotless with an amazing view of the Thames. Loved the American Bar and lunch at the Savoy Grill.

Unfortunately the pool was not in use during our stay which’s was a shame. We were offered to go to an alternative hotel to use its facilities but that didn’t suit us.

It was an experience we will never forget and would definitely stay again. Beautiful hotel.

The service was superb > especially the room service. Could not fault it. Food excellent. Beds so comfortable and room is the quietest in London! So kind to leave chocolate for my husbands birthday. That made his day. The doormen were brilliant too.

The tea was too weak for me. Toast was not toasted enough. We had problems with the final bill and there were extra charges on it, but the receptionist did sort it out. I also think we should have been told about the extra daily service charge of £35.

Beautiful hotel - policy needs updating

Iconic

We went to the American bar - chatted for ages, then as soon as we sat down (empty might I add) we were told that we couldn’t have a drink because of our clothes - please note I was wearing a 2500E Chloe coat and 5000E bag! So hardly shabby but because I had leggings with my 1000E cashmere jumper NOPE.. literally embarrassed and walked out.. luxury is not what it used to be it can be unique and different - keep up with the times!!!
We were staying and was rare op as we had baby sitter.. so was disappointing.
