The Witchery by the Castle Hotel, Edinburgh
Expert reviews
“This flamboyant and fabulously gothic bolthole is all your historical fantasies rolled into one. If it doesn’t make your pulse race, quite frankly you haven’t got one. James Thomson opened this restaurant with rooms in 1979 in a clutch of 16th-century buildings tucked away beneath the castle and it’s still, more than three decades later, the ultimate romantic retreat.”
Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Edinburgh.
“Set in a 16th-century Old Town house in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, the Witchery’s nine lavish Gothic suites are extravagantly furnished with antiques, oak panelling, tapestries, open fires, four-poster beds and roll-top baths, and supplied with flowers, chocolates and complimentary champagne.”
Gothic romance and dramatic grandeur rise to enchanting, theatrical levels at The Witchery by the Castle—it’s like The Phantom of the Opera in hotel form. Although the restaurant downstairs might be the main attraction, those looking for an intimate, lavish escape are hard-pressed to find anything more decadent than The Witchery’s nine suites.
“If Pugin designed Gothic revival love nests they would look like this: an outrageous riposte to modern minimalism realised in nine fantasy suites close by the gates of Edinburgh Castle. Essentially a restaurant with rooms, but nevertheless the perfect hideaway for incurable romantics.”

Enchanting Hotel
EVERYTHING! Staff was outstanding, they would do anything to make your stay perfect. The building is quite mysterious and it was fun to watch all the tourists taking pictures of our Close and then we got to unlock the gate and go in. ha! :)
Really nothing. The charm of the bathroom was the clawfoot tub; unfortunately, that can be hard to take a shower.

Best hotel I’ve stayed at
Best place we have stayed at. Beautiful rooms and the staff are so friendly. We parked our car at their sister hotel and got a complimentary taxi to the witchery. Nice vegan breakfast. We will be staying again 🙂

Incredible hotel! Beautiful suite consists of two rooms. Opulent and elegant design without shabiness. Exceptional bathroom with to gothic sinks, big bath, walk-in tropical shower for two people, canopy bed and truly magnificent lighting. Plus Echo for your favorite music.
It would be great if you add umbrellas and a coat hanger.

Truly phenomenal team keeping up a hidden gem!
Expansive, private, centrally located to the main city attractions we were intending to see.
There was occasional noise from the room above, but it’s expected due to the nature of the rooms. Everything else was excellent!

cosy, romantic, indulgent getaway
the staff were really friendly and the food was great.
I get that it’s gothic but certain parts in the room needed a bit of tlc e.g. ripped lampshades on the inner side - this is not setting ambience this is just not replacing something that has been damaged

Very good
The decor, dining areas and Heriot room was excellent
There was no where to sit and have a drink in the evening, we were really looking forward to enjoying an evening relaxing in a lounge area but had to go out and find an off licence and stay in our room all night. Not how we imagined we would be celebrating our 49th wedding anniversary 😓

A special Edinburgh experience for thrill-seekers not pleasure-seekers.
Wow, what an experience. The first impression, as you enter the room, is staggering. Certainly, an experience somewhere between (what I imagine) straying in a 17th century gentrified townhouse and a Sherlock Holmes movie set. It was a great experience and one I don't regret, nor am I likely to forget. We enjoyed the restaurant (breakfast and dinner). Our servers we attentive and very professional and the overall dining experience was not nearly as pretentious as I had imagined. The food was of a good standard, and while not spectacular, the ambience and the service more than made up for it. The in-room breakfast option was really good and I would strongly recommend this option. The location of the property cannot be beaten - just bear in mind you are on the Royal Mile, so the hum-drum of the passing tourists adds to the realism of an "early modern cityscape".
As much as I enjoyed the stay, there are some reality checks I wish I had been made aware of. Most notably, this is not a hotel - so don't expect any concierge-type service. This is a restaurant with rooms... not a hotel with a restaurant. Our check-in (4 pm) was underwhelming - we did feel like uninvited guests who were mostly a hindrance to the regular restaurant patrons. It seemed that the passing tourists blocking the entrance for a cheeky photo op were more important to the restaurant staff who were checking us, the paying guests, into the room. We were offered help with our luggage, but more as an afterthought. The stone spiral staircase leading up to our room (The Rectory), which is in keeping with the period property, is litigation waiting to happen. I would have thought that the staff (restaurant staff) would have shown more care to the guest's arrival than was shown to us. It's not luxury - it's an experience, so come with that expectation. I really enjoyed this stay, but in retrospect, it was not worth the money. As stated above, I loved the experience, and I don't regret staying here, but the expense cannot be rationally justified in the same way as a bonafide hotel stay. If you are expecting to be treated like a hotel guest, then you will be disappointed. One night would be all you need for the experience; three nights is overkill.

Stunning hotel in a prime location.
Everything. The room, service and food. I honestly can't fault anything. The room (Library) was simply stunning with lots of facilities. The staff are fantastic. They treat you with utmost respect. The location is excellent; at the top of the Royal Mile. A walking distance to the city centre. All in all, staying at the Witchery is an unforgettable experience and we hope to be back to try a different room.
Restaurant Menu Prices: Despite the food being delicious, the a la carte dinner menu prices are excessive. Discretionary charge is also added to the bill which we consider being a little presumptuous. The food and service were great and we were going to leave a tip anyway. Apart from that, everything was spot on.

good.
it was dramatic in feel and look. at 795 for a night there were things missing ! no option for drink in the room regardless if it was a further costs. cookies half eaten in a jar. was very poor … much positive but could be much better ! tv was rubbish , but overall the feel was different due to the atmosphere and building ! I was able to blank out the irritants and focus on the pleasure of being in a time warp of old ! loved it but if you want that kind of money for a night ! step it up … t x
