Hotel du Vin, Edinburgh

11 Bristo Place, Old Town, Edinburgh, EH1 1EZ, United Kingdom. (show on map)

Hotel du Vin Edinburgh is tucked away in the city’s historic Old Town, just a short stroll from the Royal Mile. Housed in a striking stone building dating back to 1743, the property has lived several fascinating lives over the centuries, serving as a poorhouse, an asylum, a science laboratory and even a blood donation centre before becoming the boutique hotel it is today.

One of the hotel’s most interesting transformations came in the 2000s, when the site underwent a major redevelopment and refurbishment. The project preserved elements of the original historic structure while adding a contemporary extension, creating a blend of old Edinburgh character and modern comfort. The redesign was led by Curious, a hospitality design specialist, and reportedly involved an investment of around £8 million.

Inside, the hotel embraces the wine-focused heritage of the Hotel du Vin brand. Guests will find extensive wine cellars, tasting spaces and a cosy bistro atmosphere. Many rooms feature custom-made sleigh beds, roll-top baths and rich, understated interiors that feel elegant without being overly formal.

The location is another highlight. The hotel sits close to the National Museum of Scotland, the historic Royal Mile, and many of Edinburgh’s famous attractions, making it easy to explore the city on foot. Edinburgh Castle, St Giles’ Cathedral and Holyrood Palace are all within easy reach.

A particularly unusual detail is that some of the most atmospheric guest rooms occupy parts of the former asylum building itself. Rather than hiding its past, the hotel embraces it, turning one of Edinburgh’s most unexpected historic buildings into a character-filled place to stay.

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“This boutique hotel in the city center is just a few minutes’ walk from nearly every tourist site. Each room has a custom-made sleigh bed and a hand-sprung mattress, but the hotel’s best feature might be the ultra-cozy, tartan-carpeted whiskey “snug,” a cozy room, all too tempting on a gray Scottish day.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Edinburgh.

Fodors review:

“Leave it to one of the U.K.’s most forward-thinking chains to convert a Victorian-era asylum into this understated luxury property that feels steeped in history and lore despite its contemporary decor and trappings, like the fairy-lit archway you enter through.”

Telegraph review:

“This hotel has all the hallmarks that make the Hotel du Vin brand so popular, with a big emphasis on wine and bistro dining, while still giving a sense of place with touches of tartan and exposed brick. The railway station, major tourist attractions and festival venues are all within convenient reach.”

Great location, lovely room, great shower. Overall good, didn't feel quite as special as I thought i

I didn't ask for a quiet room.

Very personal...but I would have liked some conditioner in the bathroom. Just saves carrying too much luggage and seems to be standard elsewhere. I think the afternoon tea selection could have been bigger: maybe offered sandwiches or similar. Evening meal was good but felt expensive compared to external restaurants. Felt the overall room price warranted breakfast being included.

An excellent facility in an excellent location - I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

Staff was exceptionally pleasant and accommodating. Abs, the day manager, was most charming and attentive. Restaurant, featuring French specialties, was very good and offered both full meals and light fare. The location was very convenient - almost directly across from the National Museum and an easy walk to many other attractions.

Toilet in junior suite did not have a separate compartment. This is a drawback when sharing a room, even with one's partner. Also, the creaky floors might bother people not used to old buildings. I live in an old building in an old city so they did not bother me.

A superb hotel, very friendly, everything immaculate and stylish. Great location. Will stay again.

The hotel is beautifully laid out. I loved the courtroom area. I will certainly return with my wife for a leisure break. 1 night wasn't enough.

Nothing to add. Yes, there was a fair bit of noise from the streets, but it was a Friday night and close to the students zone they were obviously enjoying being young.

Good quality hotel

Lovely spacious room for Edinburgh with a nice big bathroom (nice bath & shower). Bed was comfortable & the little extras like tea/ coffee were good quality.

Just the usual price of a Edinburgh hotel, it must be one of the most expensive city's to stay in the UK.

Wonderful location w/ excellent front desk

Great location! Very quiet because the hotel is a bit set back and there’s a private courtyard that rooms overlook. Front desk was exceptionally helpful.

The bathrooms need hooks around the sink for towels, but other than that minor adjustment it was lovely! I would wish they would offer morning coffee in the lobby, which is so much better than coffee in the room.

Great location and looking hotel. Some small issues

The room was really nice. Location excellent. Appearance excellent.

Stayed 2 nights with young children in suite. Offered clean on second day - said yes - I thought this was standard - not carried out and so ran out of towels coffee etc.

Told that opening sofa on sofa bed would normally cost £60 but it wasn’t this time

Breakfast too expensive

Excellent first time at a Hotel du Vin property

The staff went above and beyond, including Ana Lisa and the other staff at the front desk. We loved the hotel so much we decided to stay another night. The beds were incredible comfortable and the location was perfect -- close to everything but not on a busy street. We enjoyed breakfast and lunch, all delicious. The staff in the restaurant were lovely too. I loved being able to get a quality glass of red before the end of the day at the hotel. It was super cozy and I also loved the decor.

It was perfect

Great location, wonderful staff, I would highly recommend this hotel!

At reception, Jennifer greeted us and showed us our room. Jennifer greeted us each day and we talked about our day. She is a very sweet and kind receptionist. The room was quite spacious, quiet, and well appointed. Breakfast had many choices and was very delicious, a great way to start your day. I would highly recommend staying here if available.

Everything was great. We had zero issues at this very grand hotel. All the employees were fantastic.

Perfect for a great birthday with the family.

Lovely hotel with lovely staff and an excellent standard of hospitality. The staff were so accommodating to various requests from the family regarding my birthday and I'd absolutely recommend the hotel as a great place to stay .

Maybe a slightly larger selection of vegetarian options on the dinner menu?

Loved it on the whole but that came at a price I was willing to pay

Our suite was amazing. Breakfast is good very fresh and cooked to order. Interesting history to it was once a lunatic asylum. It’s a beautiful old building just outside the city centre.

Honestly it’s expensive particularly in the evenings restaurant. Staff on the whole were very good but the service on our evenings meal was incredible slow and at the time the restaurant was empty.
Even though it has a lift this does not go to the upper floors they have lots of steps to them.

Lovely boutique hotel. Friendly helpful staff, thank you

small size of hotel.

I am sad to say that both me and my friend noticed unpleasant smell (unhygienic smell somewhere in the breakfast area/tables. Its the kind of smell where surfaces have not been wiped with clean cloths. Very off-putting for a dining area. Sorry to have to say it but I offer it so that you can improve it for other guests. Easily rectified!

A nice classy place to stay while seeing Edinburgh

Brilliant location and the hotel felt a little special once inside.

The only reason to have a little moan was the AC in our suite was noisy even when turned off.

An excellent hotel in an unbeatable location for all the major sites in Edinburgh

Excellent location. Friendly efficient and helpful staff. Dinner in bistro very good. Breakfast excellent.

There is no parking at the hotel. The recommended car park is some distance away and quite expensive.
