Hotel du Vin, Edinburgh
Expert reviews
“This boutique hotel in the city center is just a few minutes’ walk from nearly every tourist site. Each room has a custom-made sleigh bed and a hand-sprung mattress, but the hotel’s best feature might be the ultra-cozy, tartan-carpeted whiskey “snug,” a cozy room, all too tempting on a gray Scottish day.”
Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Edinburgh.
“Leave it to one of the U.K.’s most forward-thinking chains to convert a Victorian-era asylum into this understated luxury property that feels steeped in history and lore despite its contemporary decor and trappings, like the fairy-lit archway you enter through.”
“This hotel has all the hallmarks that make the Hotel du Vin brand so popular, with a big emphasis on wine and bistro dining, while still giving a sense of place with touches of tartan and exposed brick. The railway station, major tourist attractions and festival venues are all within convenient reach.”

All you need to know
Hotel du Vin Edinburgh is tucked away in the city’s historic Old Town, just a short stroll from the Royal Mile. Housed in a striking stone building dating back to 1743, the property has lived several fascinating lives over the centuries, serving as a poorhouse, an asylum, a science laboratory and even a blood donation centre before becoming the boutique hotel it is today.
One of the hotel’s most interesting transformations came in the 2000s, when the site underwent a major redevelopment and refurbishment. The project preserved elements of the original historic structure while adding a contemporary extension, creating a blend of old Edinburgh character and modern comfort. The redesign was led by Curious, a hospitality design specialist, and reportedly involved an investment of around £8 million.
Inside, the hotel embraces the wine-focused heritage of the Hotel du Vin brand. Guests will find extensive wine cellars, tasting spaces and a cosy bistro atmosphere. Many rooms feature custom-made sleigh beds, roll-top baths and rich, understated interiors that feel elegant without being overly formal.
The location is another highlight. The hotel sits close to the National Museum of Scotland, the historic Royal Mile, and many of Edinburgh’s famous attractions, making it easy to explore the city on foot. Edinburgh Castle, St Giles’ Cathedral and Holyrood Palace are all within easy reach.
A particularly unusual detail is that some of the most atmospheric guest rooms occupy parts of the former asylum building itself. Rather than hiding its past, the hotel embraces it, turning one of Edinburgh’s most unexpected historic buildings into a character-filled place to stay.

Fabulous
We didn't care for the food. They were nice to change our room with a big walk in shower.

Wonderful location w/ excellent front desk
Great location! Very quiet because the hotel is a bit set back and there’s a private courtyard that rooms overlook. Front desk was exceptionally helpful.
The bathrooms need hooks around the sink for towels, but other than that minor adjustment it was lovely! I would wish they would offer morning coffee in the lobby, which is so much better than coffee in the room.

Great location and looking hotel. Some small issues
The room was really nice. Location excellent. Appearance excellent.
Stayed 2 nights with young children in suite. Offered clean on second day - said yes - I thought this was standard - not carried out and so ran out of towels coffee etc. Told that opening sofa on sofa bed would normally cost £60 but it wasn’t this time Breakfast too expensive

Excellent first time at a Hotel du Vin property
The staff went above and beyond, including Ana Lisa and the other staff at the front desk. We loved the hotel so much we decided to stay another night. The beds were incredible comfortable and the location was perfect -- close to everything but not on a busy street. We enjoyed breakfast and lunch, all delicious. The staff in the restaurant were lovely too. I loved being able to get a quality glass of red before the end of the day at the hotel. It was super cozy and I also loved the decor.
It was perfect

Great location, wonderful staff, I would highly recommend this hotel!
At reception, Jennifer greeted us and showed us our room. Jennifer greeted us each day and we talked about our day. She is a very sweet and kind receptionist. The room was quite spacious, quiet, and well appointed. Breakfast had many choices and was very delicious, a great way to start your day. I would highly recommend staying here if available.
Everything was great. We had zero issues at this very grand hotel. All the employees were fantastic.

Perfect for a great birthday with the family.
Lovely hotel with lovely staff and an excellent standard of hospitality. The staff were so accommodating to various requests from the family regarding my birthday and I'd absolutely recommend the hotel as a great place to stay .
Maybe a slightly larger selection of vegetarian options on the dinner menu?

The service was excellent. The staff were amazing. The architecture of the building wrapped us in a feeling of warmth and belonging. The range of wines is appropriately extensive. As was the malt whisky. Breakfast was very good, and very filling. 10 out of 10!

Loved it on the whole but that came at a price I was willing to pay
Our suite was amazing. Breakfast is good very fresh and cooked to order. Interesting history to it was once a lunatic asylum. It’s a beautiful old building just outside the city centre.
Honestly it’s expensive particularly in the evenings restaurant. Staff on the whole were very good but the service on our evenings meal was incredible slow and at the time the restaurant was empty. Even though it has a lift this does not go to the upper floors they have lots of steps to them.

Sam was fantastic, great recommendations and super friendly, we had an amazing weekend away.

Lovely boutique hotel. Friendly helpful staff, thank you
small size of hotel.
I am sad to say that both me and my friend noticed unpleasant smell (unhygienic smell somewhere in the breakfast area/tables. Its the kind of smell where surfaces have not been wiped with clean cloths. Very off-putting for a dining area. Sorry to have to say it but I offer it so that you can improve it for other guests. Easily rectified!

A nice classy place to stay while seeing Edinburgh
Brilliant location and the hotel felt a little special once inside.
The only reason to have a little moan was the AC in our suite was noisy even when turned off.

An excellent hotel in an unbeatable location for all the major sites in Edinburgh
Excellent location. Friendly efficient and helpful staff. Dinner in bistro very good. Breakfast excellent.
There is no parking at the hotel. The recommended car park is some distance away and quite expensive.

I didn't want to leave.
The staff were amazing and really looked after me as a solo traveller. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them. Massive shout out to maya 👏. I loved the room. Perfect size, nice and quiet, and clean. The food is also amazing, have dinner here and you won't be disappointed. I was so sad to leave.
The bed was uncomfortable as it felt like it was dipping and that I was lying at an angle. I told the staff and they tried to sort it for me. It was slightly better afterwards.

Exceptional
Everything. It was close enough to the city centre without the hustle and bustle. From the kerb side appeal to the rooms, staff and the calming ambience of the decor, it was well worth a stay

The perfect cosy bolthole in the middle of a hard winter in a beautiful city
One of the loveliest and most magical hotels my girlfriend and I have visited. The room was quiet and comfortable and luxurious. Everything from the courtyard to the bar and restaurant just screamed welcome and ‘this place is a bit special’
Could have done with a decent coffee maker in the room

Amazing, great staff and such a nice bar
Amazing front of house staff, great breakfast. Staff were so attentive and welcoming. Hotel is in a great location. The suite was amazing, the bath was so deep and I loved the entire stay.

It was a really enjoyable stay, and great to be so close to the Royal Mile and the castle
Eggs Benedict for breakfast was great. Our evening meal of Chateau Briand plus a bottle of red wine for two people was excelient.
The full British breakfast needed to be hotter and the black pudding needed a bit longer in the frying pan.

Great location. Great stall. Lovely breakfast.
We got stuck in Edinburgh during the snow in January and managed to book the hotel du vin. Dog friendly as we had our well behaved dog with us. Staff couldn’t have been better. Roxy got a mat. Bed. And a bag with treats. Poo bags and a ball in it. Places to walk her were a stones throw away. Staff set us up a table in a little private dining area so she could be with us for breakfast. Lovely room. Had a fantastic time.
All was good

Excellent location, amazing staff, atmosphere and dining.
Hotel du vin - the Errazuriz suite was perfect, enormous bed, his and hers showers plus a roll top bath and Bluetooth sound system. Only suggestion would be having soaps near the bath as the shower ones were fixed to the wall. The breakfasts are to die for too
