Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“This boutique hotel in the city center is just a few minutes’ walk from nearly every tourist site. Each room has a custom-made sleigh bed and a hand-sprung mattress, but the hotel’s best feature might be the ultra-cozy, tartan-carpeted whiskey “snug,” a cozy room, all too tempting on a gray Scottish day.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Edinburgh.

Fodors review:

“Leave it to one of the U.K.’s most forward-thinking chains to convert a Victorian-era asylum into this understated luxury property that feels steeped in history and lore despite its contemporary decor and trappings, like the fairy-lit archway you enter through.”

Telegraph review:

“This hotel has all the hallmarks that make the Hotel du Vin brand so popular, with a big emphasis on wine and bistro dining, while still giving a sense of place with touches of tartan and exposed brick. The railway station, major tourist attractions and festival venues are all within convenient reach.”

Fantastic!

The hotel was quite beautiful & brilliantly located in the middle of the Old Town - loved every minute of our stay just wished we had longer!

Room was a little too warm & we couldn't open the window as the black out blinds just pushed it closed again - had to try to prop the window open but it still didn't stay open.

A beautiful hotel & restaurant, perfect place to celebrate my 60th birthday, staff were outstanding .

The staff were brilliant & couldn’t do enough for you, even leaving a bottle of Champagne in our room for my 60th birthday, a lovely touch. The room was beautiful & the bed amazing for comfort. The roll top bath in the room was pure luxury & fabulous to relax in with a glass of wine after a day walking around Edinburgh sightseeing. The separate waterfall shower was equally wonderful. The decor in the room was also very tasteful . 10/10

It would have been nice if the balcony had been a little bigger, you could only stand out there, no room for a table or chairs but it wasn’t a deal breaker.

Besides the broken sleep, the stay was lovely. Local attractions within walking distance. Room very comfortable & wa

Style. Lovely bedroom, bar area & restaurant.

As the hotel is on a main thoroughfare, it was very noisy at night. Consequently, had broken nights’ sleep whilst staying there

Fantastic service from the hotel staff - we arrived early in the morning from the sleeper train and they worked hard to get our room ready while we had breakfast and a coffee. Great location and very comfortable rooms. Friendly and attentive staff at breakfast in the restaurant

Luxurious

Bathtub in room was luxurious. large spacious room, plenty of space for luggage, friendly and knowledgable staff, excellent bar and restaurant. Always had breakfast and never failed to get me going in the morning.

Not the thickest of walls for noise insulation. The heating unit / fan did make quite a bit of noise when running or let noise leak in from other rooms so could disturb sleep and the pillows were not as firm as I normally prefer.

Great room, shame about the breakfast.

We upgraded to a junior suite which was terrific - lots of room, big comfortable bed, great en-suite bathroom. Hotel has lots of character as it's a lovely conversion of a very old building. Staff were helpful and pleasant.

Breakfast was disappointing for £22. Limited continental selection at breakfast, possibly poor timing on our part, but we had to wait for a restock on a number of items. Cooked breakfast had issues with portion size and several ingredients were overcooked.

Fabulous character hotel in Old Town

Great staff - all very approachable friendly, and very helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Rooms - very clean & comfortable. Lovely bathroom products. Plenty of wardrobe space. Tea & coffee making & free bottled water. Lovely breakfasts. Plenty of choice both buffet selection - fresh fruits, cereals, pastries, toast - and hot cooked to order including, full breakfast (also vegetarian) eggs benedict with ham, salmon, avocado on toast, boiled eggs. Bistro also excellent. Very tasty food - fabulous French onion soup- and generous portions. Finally good location for Central attractions as long as you don't mind steps or hills. Quiet location at our time of visit (January)

Only negative from my point of view, being a woman, was the subdued bedroom lighting. Insufficiently bright enough either near the mirror or in the bathroom to apply makeup. But a very minor point that certainly did not spoil what was a lovely stay.

We had a really enjoyable and relaxing two nights stay and a lovely meal in the Bistro. All the staff made us feel very

The atmosphere of being in a period property. The lovely decor which reflected both the French and the Scottish cultures. It had a warm, cosy vibe. Great location, not far from Grassmarket and The Royal Mile and handy for the Festival Theatre. The staff were really welcoming and added to the enjoyment of our stay.

Amazing stay - we will be back!

The room was beautiful and the staff were very helpful. We were staying for our 10 year anniversary and had been gifted a bottle of champagne for our room which was a lovely surprise too.

Nothing, everything was perfect.
