The Shelbourne Renaissance Hotel, Dublin

27 St Stephen's Green, Dublin, Ireland (show on map)

The Shelbourne, founded in 1824 by Martin Burke, is truly the “Grand Dame” of Dublin. Originally formed by unifying three townhouses, the hotel was later redesigned in the High Victorian style by architect John McCurdy between 1866 and 1867. Its legacy is deeply intertwined with Irish history, most notably serving as the site where the Irish Free State Constitution was drafted in 1922 within Room 112, now known as the Constitution Room.

Beyond its political significance, the hotel has long been a magnet for high-profile guests. Hollywood icons like Charlie Chaplin and Grace Kelly, as well as literary figures like W.B. Yeats, have graced its halls. The building itself is filled with unique treasures, such as the famous Horseshoe Bar, which features an intimate, classic design, and a dedicated mural in the 1824 Bar honoring the revolutionary Countess Markievicz.

The Shelbourne’s location is unbeatable for those looking to soak up Dublin’s culture. Overlooking the scenic St. Stephen’s Green, it sits just steps away from the vibrant shopping on Grafton Street and a short walk from major cultural touchstones like the National Museum of Ireland and Trinity College.

Whether you’re stopping by for its renowned afternoon tea in the Lord Mayor’s Lounge or simply admiring the architecture, the hotel remains a living monument to Dublin’s past and its enduring elegance. It continues to be a central hub where history meets modern, five-star luxury in the heart of the city.

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“Dating back to 1824, the Shelbourne is an elegant historic hotel overlooking St. Stephen’s Green. Its Horseshoe Bar is a Dublin landmark; anyone who’s ever been anyone in Ireland has stopped here for a drink.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Dublin.

Lonely Planet review:

“The Shelbourne has been the preferred halting post of the powerful and wealthy since 1824. Several owners and refurbs later it is now part of Marriott’s Renaissance portfolio, and while it has a couple of rivals in the luxury stakes, it cannot be beaten for heritage.”

Fodors review:

“Paris has the Ritz, New York has the St. Regis, and Dublin has the Shelbourne—today, newly resplendent in its broad, ornamented, pink-and-white, mid-Victorian facade after a no-expense-spared renovation by new owner Marriott.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Dublin.

Frommers review:

“A feeling of fin de siècle elegance pervades throughout the grand lobby rooms, with high plaster ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and a winding iron staircase. Guest rooms have a much more discreet, contemporary elegance.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Dublin.

Forbes review:

“One of the city’s most elegant and historic properties is steeped in tradition, culture and prominence, from the original 19th-century facade, gleaming marble, sparkling chandeliers, decorative stained glass and artwork, to its 265 rooms, many of which overlook St Stephen’s Green Park.”

Telegraph review:

“The signature red-brick Victorian façade of The Shelbourne Dublin has glowed on the northern side of St Stephen’s Green since 1824. Think five-star elegance: the main bar is a popular fixture on the city’s social scene, while afternoon tea in the Lord Mayor’s Lounge is something of a Dublin tradition.”

Weekend break in beautiful hotel

Location was perfect. Located near to the main shopping high street. Short walk to temple bar area. The staff were extremely friendly and the room was very clean. The lobby area and entrance is stunning and very striking.

The coffee machine was a little temperamental in the room and our view from the window was uninspiring. However, we didn’t opt for the park view so we can live with that.

Of all the Christmas visits we have been on in The Shelbourne, this year was the best!

Friendly and helpful staff. Clean and well decorated rooms. Stunning interior. The revolving door! ✨ The Christmas decor 🎄 The Spa! Amazing experience!

Leisure centre facilities lacking majorly. Pool temp could be warmer. Although renovations are underway, there is no plan within those renovations to include a jacuzzi or thermal suite facilities. Understandably with an old building - space can be an issue for plans such as this. However, with a Spa, such facilities would be largely favorable. The swimming pool could be two thirds the size to incorporate a jacuzzi. Just a suggestion. Always look forward to my Christmas trip there!

Glad we only stayed 1 night

Very nice room comfortable bed.

Bathroom shower wasn’t easy to get in and out almost fell. No breakfast included for the price we paid Parking charge of $50.00 was outrageous all the hotels we stayed in Ireland we never had to pay for a parking charge.

Staff are incredibly helpful. Room very cosy and comfortable.

The staff went out their way to assist me. My flight was delayed and I had to stay in Dublin for 2 extra days. I felt safe and well taken care of.

I think the price was really high but I think it went up due to the flight cancellations. Hopefully the airline covers it when I submit my receipt. But honestly, I would not have personally stayed there for $1000 a night. $500 yes.

Beautiful with great location. Staff very professional and the decor was very elegant and classic even down to the hallways. Love the private library bar. Great buffet. Paintings beautiful. Maintenance where an artist was making touchups on a buffet. Such detail in maintenance 👏🏻

Nothing.

It was delightful and I am sure to return.

Prompt, friendly service in room service, concierge, and breakfast

The halls were cramped in the historic sections of the hotel. The AC wouldn't go up so it was a bit warm for my taste, but I like it cold.

A beautiful historic hotel with excellent service, great dining options, and a perfect location.

We spent a wonderful weekend at this historic hotel. The service was excellent throughout, and we especially enjoyed the variety of restaurants and bars available on-site. The location is perfect—central, yet peaceful—which made our stay truly memorable. Highly recommended!

The only thing we didn’t like was the rather small size of our room. However, this was a minor issue compared to the overall quality of the experience.

Historic 5 star Hotel in city centre

Beautiful room with a balcony Swimming pool, gym Bar 27: Salad with mixed leaves, beetroot, feta cheese and crunchy hazelnuts and walnuts was truly delicious with a generous amount of leaves. Celery soup was amazing too. We really enjoyed dinner as well, which was served in a private dining room as the Saddle room was closed for refurbishment. Excellent food and a special atmosphere with real candlelight ! It was heartwarming that a few staff remembered us, even though it’s been 4 months since our last stay.

Was really looking forward to SHELBOURNE. Did not live up to expectations.

Staff were pleasant and helpful. Door staff in particular were very welcoming.

Lots of things! Never been to a hotel where they remove an additional €300 from your card when you arrive - on the off chance that you might spend money on hotel items! Breakfast was a big disappointment - unheated plates and regularly cold food - particularly scrambled egg. €25 for basic breakfast fodder - but if you want a boiled or fried egg. - or toast - that’s €6 extra! And don’t ask for Eggs Benedict (€21) Don’t want my breakfast disturbed by individuals conducting business on their phones or laptops at the next table. I’m not interested in their reports to their bosses. Or sending instructions back to head office. Bedroom temperature fluctuations - asked for help and somebody checked - but no improvement. Orders in the bar confused or neglected on several occasions. OK - only minor irritations. But certainly question the SHELBOURNE 5* claim. Too expensive for the quality of service received. Not enough attention to detail in the right areas. Hotel seems to be living somewhat on its long history. There are better hotels elsewhere. There are better hotels in Dublin! Would we return? No.

Shelbourne Magical !

What can you say about The Shelbourne that hasnt already been said ? Excellent location, excellent staff, friendly, helpful. Everybody smiling. We stayed between Christmas and New Year so it did feel a little extra Magic. The bar is one of the best bars in Dublin, and we had food and drinks on our first night which was perfect and highly recommended. The breakfast is amazing ! Our room was luxurious and comfortable. Looking forward to staying again.

A fair stay.

Staff were friendly.

Our room wasn’t ready on arrival after check in time on the 23rd, waited in the bar until 4pm for our room. Christmas menu not offered at lunch which was surprising on Christmas day.

Took thirty years to get here next time hopefully won't be so long

Location is perfect, room lovely, staff excellent. We don't normally spend quite so much on hotel accommodation but it was a special occasion, Jackie's birthday and The Shelbourne lived up to expectations. Thirty years ago we visited Dublin for the first time together and walked past The Shelbourne and we said "one day". Four children, twenty five years of marriage and we made it. Hopefully it won't be quite so long for our next visit.

Small criticism the coffee machine in the room was maddening :o

absolutely loved every minute from start to finish of our 3 night stay. location is perfect and the hotel and staff are

It had a lovely unpretentious atmosphere that was so inclusive and welcoming of everyone. Absolutely outstanding breakfast and great food for dinner. little disappointed in Christmas lunch mains could be better but rest was super. Rooms very comfortable, we had 2 booked. Queen bathroom is far too small in 271 the other room bathroom was big and spacious. Staff are absolutely fantastic in particular we would like to thank Maurice who was just so welcoming helpful and gave us great advice on everything. all staff brilliant and a credit to the hotel. Would definitely go back.

Bathroom for a queen room was way too small.
