Buswells Hotel, Dublin

23-27 Molesworth Street, Dublin 2, D02 DT80, Ireland (show on map)

Buswells Hotel is a true Dublin institution, tucked away in a series of five elegant Georgian townhouses on Molesworth Street. While it has operated as a hotel since the 1880s, its history goes back even further. In 1861, the building served as The Queen’s Institute for the Training and Employment of Educated Women, a pioneering center that offered practical education to women long before it was the norm.

The hotel’s past is woven into the fabric of its walls. By the 1930s, it was quite ahead of its time, installing central heating two years before the more famous Shelbourne Hotel. Today, visitors can still spot a plaque in the lobby commemorating the original institute, serving as a quiet nod to its legacy of female empowerment.

Its location is unbeatable for history buffs and culture seekers. You are essentially neighbors with Dáil Éireann, the Irish Parliament, located right across the street. The area is a cultural hub, putting you just a short, pleasant walk from the National Museum of Ireland, the National Library, and the beautiful grounds of Trinity College.

If you’re looking to soak in the city, the vibrant shops of Grafton Street and the green expanse of St. Stephen’s Green are only minutes away. It is the perfect spot for anyone wanting to experience the historic charm of Dublin while staying right in the middle of all the action.

Expert reviews

The Guardian review:

“Buswells is a Dublin institution that offers restrained Georgian opulence in the heart of town. Rooms are compact and well-appointed, with those on the lower floors boasting higher ceilings, as is the case with nearly all of Dublin’s 18th-century town houses.”

Telegraph review:

“Snug, welcoming, and quietly atmospheric, Buswells enjoys a prominent setting just across the road from the Irish Parliament. Come here for a comfortable home from home right at the very heart of Dublin life.”

I'll be back!

The staff are lovely, and the hotel is charming.

I was disappointed wiht the food in the restaurant. I was hoping for something a little less "hotelly"

Very good location and attentive staff with high cleanliness

The hotel was in the heart of the city but just slightly out to the point where there isn’t heavy foot traffic and noise around the building. It was perfect for going out for meals or visits to museums.

There was a lot of noise from rooms beside and above due to squeaky floorboards when people are walking around getting ready in the morning and at night. The bath drain also drained away very slowly, the toilet seat was also loose and was nearly coming off.

Comfortable and pleasant stay.

Comfortable and not brash . Quiet and restrained decor ,. refined clientele.

Gas fires in lobby and lounge were not lit . Said by staff member to be out of order . it was February and VERY wet and cold outside .A warm fire would have been so welcoming .

Just a great City break. Really recommended.

Old Fashioned Dublin charm. Really excellent location. Love the bar area and great lounge service. Rare to find these days.

The receptionist on that particular day was completely unfamiliar with Hotel Services for example did not know the bar offered a light breakfast menu from 8-10 am . Told us that no food served till after 3pm.

I like staying in Buswells!

I stay at this Hotel quite often and enjoy the friendship extended to me by all the staff.

Access to rooms are in some instances difficult and directional signs to rooms could be improved.

Transported me back in time in Dublin

Great Dublin City location
Old World feel in Buswells with a sense of Dublin history but no compromise on comfort .Very good value .Loved being able to walk out the front door on the corner of Kildare Street and get walking or straight on a bus and feel safe to explore Dublin. Then back to a bar filled with interesting people

Great location for city centre, details in rooms need to be looked at.

Decor and how it feels like home. Great location to central tourist spots and for dining.

To locate room, wrong number was on the wall. It seems all the room numbers need to reviewed and done up.
Phone in room was not working and the cups for tea were dirty.

The Christmas decorations create a lovely atmosphere. The price was so good and the location is amazing .

A wonderful weekend in a beautiful hotel… made more special by the excellent staff.

Beautiful hotel in a wonderful location in walking distance of the centre of Dublin and Temple Bar. The staff were fantastic, friendly, courteous and extremely welcoming . They are all a credit to the hotel and made the experience memorable.

The breakfast was an extra 25euros per person and wasn’t particularly good value.

A very enjoyable stay in a well located hotel.

All the staff were excellent. Friendly and knowledgeable which made the experience even more enjoyable.

Service was a little slow at times but it was very busy and it didn’t detract from our trip too much.

I keep coming back to this my favourite hotel in Dublin!

The property is very convenient for my requirements and the staff are most friendly, particularly at reception and in the dining room. Breakfast was appetising and well presented.

The room was in a very poor location, requiring access by means of several flights of stairs comprising in all 34 steps from reception, with no lift facilities! I prefer a softer mattress and firmer pillow, but not complaining.

A lovely, centrally located hotel. All the hotel staff were helpful and pleasant to deal with during our short stay.

The location was perfect. We were attending a graduation in Trinity and never would have made the 10 am start from our home location.

No complaints at all.

Beautiful old school hotel with perfect location and friendly staff.

Location is everything. Best possible place in the center of town walkable and easy access to places of interest. The staff was always pleasant and especially the door men who were extremely helpful.

The twin room at the end of the hall way #109 had persistent piano music playing in the background. No way to tune that out, it could be overridden by the television but that was the last resort.
The bathroom drain could be cleaned. Shaving residue from men’s facial hair accumulated in the drain. Could be cleaned out.

Fab location, hotel and, best of all, staff

Piped harp music from bar downstairs irritated a bit and shower water pressure a bit low, but a fabulous hotel, breakfast and - above all - staff (who were always super-friendly and eager to please!) We will be back, I’m sure
