The Clarence, Dublin

6-8 Wellington Quay, Temple Bar, Dublin 2, D02 HT44, Ireland (show on map)

The Clarence Hotel is a historic landmark nestled in the heart of Dublin’s vibrant Temple Bar district. Established in 1852, the building originally featured Art Deco-inspired architecture designed by the practice Bradbury & Evans. It sits proudly along the River Liffey, offering a unique dual-entrance layout that connects the bustling quay to the iconic cobbled streets of the city center.

The hotel gained worldwide fame in 1992 when U2 band members Bono and The Edge purchased the property. Their involvement transformed the space into a premier boutique destination, blending classic Irish hospitality with a contemporary, musician-friendly aesthetic. Designers R. Cahlill-O’Brien and John Feely were instrumental in shaping its modern interiors, which famously hosted a subterranean nightclub called The Kitchen.

Beyond its rock ‘n’ roll pedigree, the hotel is a fantastic base for explorers. You are within a short walking distance of major cultural treasures, including the historic Trinity College, the ancient Dublin Castle, and the renowned Irish Whiskey Museum. Whether you are strolling through the nearby Temple Bar area or heading toward the shopping hub of Grafton Street, you are perfectly positioned to experience the best of the capital.

Currently, the property is undergoing a period of renovation to polish its storied halls for future guests. While it refreshes its interiors, the hotel remains one of Dublin’s most iconic symbols of 21st-century character, balancing its deep-rooted history with the ever-evolving pulse of the city.

Expert reviews

CNN review:

“Owned by Bono and The Edge of U2 fame, this riverside hotel is all class, with its bright oak woods and chocolate leathers. With 49 rooms — many of which overlook the River Liffey — The Clarence qualifies for boutique status, but without all of the bombast that characterizes many designer hotels.”

Great location but room decor dated

Great location, very central - close to Temple Bar and great restaurants, shops etc. Hotel itself was nice, the lobby and bar were very stylish and our room had a lovely view of the Liffey. We also were very pleased with the free glass of prosecco!

Room was on the small side and the decor was dated, it didn't match the vibe of the lobby.

Great hotel with nice staff and perfect location

Lovely hotel in a great location. The bars were great and so was the Irish girl that served us all weekend. Great hotel.

Bed a little small and view from room was pretty poor as was a backyard and fire escape.

Luxury in the heart of Dublin

My son’s wedding was in the city centre, so we decided to stay in the Clarence Hotel for two nights. It was a great decision as the location and facilities were perfect for us. We loved the luxurious rooms and the bars and public areas. I was also happily surprised by how quiet the room was, given that we were beside the nightlife area of Dublin. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to stay right in the heart of the city.

Gorgeous hotel in the heart of Temple Bar - worth a stay!

Gorgeous decor, really well located and great price. Had a bar cafe downstairs which was really nice - felt like a new york hotel in the 20s or 40s, loads of atmosphere and super clean.

Really nice room however it looks straight out onto the street and the bathroom only had a flimsy net on the window and no way to close the curtain/blind for privacy. Also, a net on the bedroom windows would have been handy so we can have the light coming in and no one able to see in. This was a big issue. There was building work in the next room which was really loud (started at 7:15am) and the room itself was noisy (next room and on the street - the windows didn't block much sound. Also I was asked for 100 euro deposit, even though they took the first nights cost 3 days before arrival - I wasn't told about this and really annoyed. Either the deposit or first night's payment in advance - not both with no warning. No humidifier in the bathroom, but couldn't open the window due to no privacy. Massive conference party going on which was also really noisy - a warning would have been appreciated, given we'd requested a quiet room. We were told we were upgraded to a superior double, but we had two twin beds (as requested, so was fine, but couldn't see what the upgrade was?!?).

Chic hotel on the river and close to many of Dublin's top stops for visitors

Our rooms were really nice--more space than I expected. The decor was nice. We had little fridges and in-room coffee/tea maker. Big bathrooms.

Since you're on the edge of Temple Bar, it can be loud. I'm a light sleeper, and I noticed the music coming in from a nearby bar. But it didn't bother anyone else in my family.

Loved `The Clarence". Stunning historic building and splendid interior decor, great central location by the river.
The staff was absolutely amazing, so lovely and helpful! We got a free upgrade to a Deluxe room, which was a pleasant surprise.
Spacious room and thumping bathroom, very comfy bed. Best choice, highly recommended!

Cool vibe, comfortable rooms, great staff.

Spotless, comfortable Hotel with a cool vibe and great midweek rates. I had a 5th floor room away from the Quays and it was very quiet with a great view of the River Liffey! Excellent mattress and a very powerful shower. The staff were very attentive and friendly throughout my stay.

Didn't like shower curtain hanging into bath.

Beautiful reception and bar area. Really tasteful, retro style. Very pleasant helpful staff.

Our bathroom had bath and shower curtain (!) When you shower, the curtain touches your skin. We didn't like this, even though shower curtain white and very clean. Very surprised shower curtains not replaced by glass panels sitting on bath tubs.

Great location and great reception staff

The reception staff were amazing and couldn’t do enough to help. Fantastic location with a great restaurant on site. Attention to detail in the room was excellent, with a lovely walk in shower with complementary toiletries.

The bartender in the lounge bar was super rude and unfriendly. Seemed to find his guests annoying and would rather be on his phone. Kind of spoiled the overall experience.

I'll be back!

The overall atmosphere, the breakfast room, the foyer, and quirkiness of the room, the fact that I could open my window and that it was not too warm. Some of the staff were absolutely lovely (very kind gentleman who helped with our cases and ordered us a taxi), others were a little cooler and less welcoming, but overall the welcome and staff were very good.

Could probably do a little more on energy saving in corridors etc

For the most part great.

We had 2 rooms booked at this property. Rooms 508 and 506. 508 were perfect no problems, beautiful and comfortable. The location was perfect, the staff were extremely friendly.

506 however was unhygienic, my friends sent me pictures of dark hairs left in the bathtub in the room, which I have a photo of. We paid good money to stay in the hotel for the night and this was unacceptable and poor.
