The Wilder Townhouse, Dublin

Dublin 2 22 Harcourt Terrace, Dublin, Ireland. (show on map)

The Wilder Townhouse is a charming, red-brick retreat on Dublin’s Adelaide Road. Built in 1878, the building has served many unique purposes over the decades, including a home for retired governesses and even a nursing home for nuns. Its name is a playful nod to this spirited history and a subtle tribute to the wit of Oscar Wilde.

Designed by Grainne Weber, the hotel blends Victorian architecture with elegant Art Deco influences. Each of the 42 bedrooms is individually styled, ensuring that no two stays feel quite the same. Guests often find the resident-only policy creates a quiet, club-like sanctuary, far removed from the city’s usual bustle.

The interior design is a highlight, featuring parquet floors, velvet furnishings, and a “Gin & Tea Rooms” that feels like a cozy, sophisticated hideaway. Its branding, developed by Slater Design, incorporates clever nods to Wilde’s life, such as typography inspired by his Victorian magazine, *The Woman’s World*.

Location-wise, you are perfectly positioned to explore Dublin. A short stroll takes you to the greenery of St. Stephen’s Green or the historic streets of the city center. Whether you are hunting for culture at the Little Museum of Dublin or wandering toward the scenic Grand Canal, the hotel offers a serene base for your adventures.

This boutique gem captures a sense of intellectual freedom and creative defiance, making it an ideal spot for those who appreciate history with a modern, stylish twist.

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“The Wilder Townhouse, in a convenient and quiet corner of the city, is a converted Victorian townhouse with a variety of room sizes that range from the diminutive “Shoebox” rooms to suites with lounge areas.”

Telegraph review:

“Within these red-brick walls lies an impeccably styled and charming boutique hotel, where you can bed down in a historic building while enjoying numerous little luxuries. Here, the focus is on the details, from the literary touches at turndown to the elegant terrace that’s perfect for a sundowner after a day in the city.”

An incredibly comfortable experience at the Wilder

This may be the best hotel experience we've ever had in Dublin. The location couldn't be better; it's a 7 minute walk from Harcourt luas stop, but feels like it's in a quiet and peaceful area. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful, and couldn't do enough for us. They did so much to make us feel comfortable. The room and public areas were also spotlessly clean. Thank you!

Although the room was beautiful, a little more wardrobe / hanging space would be great.

Lovely experience with great staff and food

The room is adorable. Stayed in the smaller double room and it was lovely. The bathroom is also very aesthetic and shower is amazing. Breakfast is also out of this world so don't give it a miss. Bar after dinner is lovely and overall staff were super attentive and friendly

An absolute gem

Style, art, the poetry on display, in-room amenities, staff/service, the breakfast (included in our rate), the welcome drink, and the stunning bathroom styling and amenities. Also liked the street and the parking and the umbrellas for use. We plan to definitely go back to The Wilder the next time we're in Dublin!

Fabulous

Well appointed and decorated boutique hotel. Thoughtful decor. Irish made treats in bedroom. Lots of little thoughtful quirks. Excellent breakfast choice.

Problems re parking. We had to park " on street " as there was no parking available to us. We were not refunded for this and not informed if parking became available on site. While checkin was efficient it certainly did not have " an irish welcome " feel to it.

Very good stay and lovely staff

It’s been a few years since I stayed at the Wilder and it was even nicer this time. The hallway and entryway is lovely. My room, although small, had everything I needed and was very cozy. All of the staff I interacted with were lovely, especially the breakfast team.

Breakfast a bit pricey but good quality.

Super stylish and comfortable hotel with lovely pleasant and helpful staff, have already been recommending it to family

Beautiful old building, thoughtfully restored with all modern amenities, our bathroom was bright, beautiful & functional with a fantastic shower. This hotel is about 10 minutes walk from Grafton Street but felt peaceful & very comfortable.

The twin room was a little small but very well designed. The shower gel & other products (Ortiga - so not cheap) were overly scented for our taste but these are minor quibbles in an overall excellent experience.

Great place to stay in Dublin!

Lovely hotel and welcoming staff! A bit of a walk to the major attractions, but close enough. Rooms are a bit small, but exceptionally clean! Breakfast is well with the extra expense.

Nothing really.

Beautiful appointed hotel

The hotel is beautiful and in a quieter part of Dublin. The room was beautifully appointed and the staff was wonderful. The food and drinks were great. Our room was turned down in the evening and the chocolates left were delicious. There was also a small basket of goodies when we checked in. Great attention to detail. Great experience.

Of course I wished it was a bit less pricey, but isn’t that true of most things these days.

The Wilder Aims to Please

Wonderful central location on a quiet road. Rooms are nicely decorated and bed was very comfortable. Staff were always very accommodating. The bar & cafe were very nice.

We were booked into a room overlooking the garbage bins and no bathtub and it in no way resembled the photo on their site. The staff were very understanding and moved us into a front room for the second and third night of our stay - much smaller room with no tub but much better light and view out the window. No tea kettle in the room but always able to go down to cafe for pot of hot water.

Beautiful hotel a short walk from Dublin’s Attractions

G&T offered on arrival was very welcome. We loved the calm atmosphere of the hotel and the lovely touches eg pillow spray /turn down service and room snacks made us feel properly pampered.

Boutique accommodation with lovely feel and great staff

We loved everything. Such a lovely place to stay. The staff were so professional and friendly. Beautiful rooms and lovely breakfast.

Nothing really! The only very small downside is that if you have a car the onsite parking is limited. It’s ok at the weekend because street parking easy to find but I would imagine during the week a bit harder.

One of the best hotels I’ve stayed in.

The room was extremely clean and comfortable, the bathroom and shower was one of the best I’ve seen in a hotel I’ve stayed in. The bed was really comfortable and firm, the best bed I’ve slept in all the hotels I’ve stayed in. The staff were very friendly and extremely efficient.

The tv should have Crome cast to use YouTube with, no one watches tx channels any more.
