Kalimera Archanes Village, Crete
Expert reviews
“An especially appealing base for exploring Knossos and Heraklion is the well-kept wine village of Archanes, where three 19th-century stone houses tucked into a garden are fitted out with traditional furnishings and all the modern comforts. The two-story houses have one to three bedrooms, kitchens, fireplaces, and lots of beams and woodwork as well as appealing outdoor spaces.”

All you need to know
Set right in the historic center of Archanes, a colorful Cretan town widely celebrated for its masterfully preserved architecture, Kalimera Archanes Village is a boutique escape brimming with local heritage. The complex is made up of a cluster of 19th-century traditional stone houses that were meticulously restored in 2004 under strict historical guidelines. Rather than feeling like a standard hotel, it operates as an intimate estate managed by its welcoming owner, Anna Petromichelaki.
The property consists of independent, multi-story stone villas named after natural elements: *Drosostalida* (dewdrop), *Avra* (breeze), and *Zephyros* (west wind). Inside, the architecture beautifully marries Cretan tradition with functional comfort, showcasing original stone walls, cozy working fireplaces, and period-appropriate antique furniture. Each villa opens up to a lush, shared private garden that acts as a quiet sanctuary right next to the historic chapel of St. George.
Location-wise, you are just steps away from the village’s main square, but the broader region is a paradise for history buffs. Archanes has over 5,000 years of history, and the ruins of an ancient Minoan palace are scattered right through the town. Even better, the world-famous Palace of Knossos is a short 15-minute drive away.
The area is also renowned for its deep agricultural roots, backed by a wine-producing tradition that goes back millennia. Nearby, you can visit the archaeological site of Vathypetro, which famously houses one of the oldest wine presses ever discovered in the world. For nature lovers, the town sits at the base of Mount Juktas, a sacred peak that locals say resembles the profile of a sleeping Zeus.
