Staypineapple at The Alise Hotel, Chicago

1 W Washington St, Chicago, IL 60602, USA (show on map)

Set inside the historic Reliance Building in the heart of the Loop, Staypineapple Chicago (formerly known as The Alise) is a paradise for architecture lovers. Completed in 1895, this 14-story marvel was designed by the legendary architectural team of Burnham & Root, with Charles B. Atwood stepping in to finish the upper levels after John Root’s sudden death. It is widely celebrated as one of the world’s first true skyscrapers, utilizing an innovative steel skeleton that paved the way for modern glass-and-steel high-rises.

The building’s construction story is delightfully bizarre. The original landlord wanted to build the skyscraper, but the tenants in the existing building refused to break their leases. Unwilling to wait, the contractors literally jacked up the top three floors on screws, demolished the ground floor beneath them, and laid the new skyscraper’s foundation while the businesses above stayed open.

Once the rest of the tower shot up—with the top ten floors built in a lightning-fast fifteen days—it was clad in white, glazed terra-cotta. The architects mistakenly believed the glossy tile would be “self-cleaning” in the rainy, soot-choked Chicago air. Because the massive plate-glass windows flooded the interior with natural light, it quickly became a hub for medical professionals, even counting Al Capone’s personal dentist among its tenants.

Today, the boutique hotel blends its historic mosaic floors and ornate elevators with colorful, modern hospitality. It also serves as the perfect base camp for sightseeing. You are just steps from the theater district, Millennium Park, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the high-end shopping along the Magnificent Mile.

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“Housed in the landmark 1890s Reliance Building, the Alise’s slick, historic design woos architecture buffs. Deco-style lights, iron filigree stair railings and mosaic-tile floors prevail in the public areas.”

Just what we were looking for! Clean, comfortable place to stay with great location!!

Our room was quiet! Bed and pillows were very compfy!! Staff was pleasant and efficient. Interior was unique and interesting historically. Fantastic location and our room had a great view of State Street and Millennium Park. Overall clean environment. Room was equipped with everything we needed! The refillable water bottle and water station was a nice touch and way more convenient than hauling multiple water bottle to our room. (A cost savings too)

There were some obvious signs of wear at the property. We realized going in that it is an old building (part of the charm actually!), but some minor upkeep issues were
noticeable. Some chips out of the woodwork, closet doors etc. Bathtub was pretty old and a little beat up. Mattress encasement was ripped. Also, disappointed that the restaurant was closed. Not informed until morning of check in.

The views and location made us feel safe and con

The location, vintage interior, real room keys, super affordable

The restaurant was down during our stay, most likely under remodeling.

The very best staff! They were very helpful and a lot of fun.

Beautiful building, cool lobby and bar area, clean rooms with very cozy beds and linens.

The only thing I can think of is that the decor in the halls is dark, I prefer lighter colors.

Yearly shopping trip with friends.

Location and building character.

Price seems a bit high for a location near street shootings ( 2 years of shootings right across the street 2024 and 2025) and 2025 had an additional burnt car. Parking was challenging .Street loud drumming till late at night.

Wonderful stay at an iconic hotel

The location was excellent and the restored architecture and design was wonderful. The room: we liked the street view, the natural light, the room decor, the 2 luggage racks, the ‘I’m naked’ sign, the yummy complimentary cookies, beverage, and water, and having tea in the room. Also nice were the robes, the full lighted mirror in the bathroom and plenty of sink counter area. The staff; friendly and helpful.

The pillows were a bit hard for both of us.

Great hotel experience in a historic building

The hotel is the Reliance Building, the precursor to the modern skyscraper which would be familiar to architecture buffs such as myself. The lobby and the rooms were well furnished in keeping with the historical heritage of the building. The bed was very comfortable, and the desk had a lot of working space. The staff was friendly and engaging, and getting a free drink, cookie, and water bottle was a nice touch. This was a great hotel experience.

The electrical plug on the desk in the room didn't seem to allow me to plug an international adaptor.

Beautiful hotel with all the nice touches!

Great location- close to a lot, very clean, staff all very friendly, bedding was extremely comfortable

My only complaint- we went to order breakfast to our room only to find out breakfast didn’t start until 9am on Sat/Sun, not leaving us enough time to where we needed to be

Overall our stay was beautiful. It was my wife's bday and she had a wonderful time.

I like the fact that we can walk everywhere we wanted to walk because everywhere was within a couple of miles. The weather was 40s-50s which was perfect coming from 90 degree weather in Texas.

I didn't like that the streaming services in our room didn't work and they couldn't fix it at the time. My wife and I wanted to watch something on netflix and couldn't.

Definitely want to stay again!

Perfect location, in the middle of downtown. Blue and red line subways were easily accessible and bus stations were close as well. The room/bed was comfortable and surprisingly not noisy!

The room was in the smaller side for US hotels, and the price was expensive

The Loop is the place to be for location, shopping and restaurants.

We stayed there on a Saturday and Sunday night on 4th floor, in a corner suite The trains were noisy 'til they stopped running at about 1.00am. and began again very early morning. Did manage to sleep some time. The suite was very comfortable and had lovely views of State Street Sunday market, which had a very popular attendance, and Chicago theatre. The staff on reception were very nice people, and we loved the pineapple theme in our room.

We had a meal in the restaurant on the Sunday night. My burger was not cooked properly and cold. The waiter was apologetic and gave me a complementary salad while a replacement was cooked. I didn't enjoy that either. We had breakfast there in the morning, that was ok. 500 dollars for two nights (no meals included) was quite expensive we think.

Nice Hotel, Great Location

The room was clean, comfortable, nice amenities, and excellent location.

The restaurant and the bar were not staffed well. Our first night there, there was only one server taking care of the restaurant. She did her best, but that is a lot for one individual and service was very slow. The bar wasn't much better, the second night we went for drinks, the regular bar tender was good. But when she took her break, the young man relieving her spent more time out of sight on his phone (I could see him from where was sitting) than tending the bar. We actually had to tell him that more customers had come in and were waiting for service

Comfortable stay and close to many attractions

Very clean room, comfortable bed and pillows. Nice view outside. Location was very close to most major attractions.
Valet parking was really useful and the drinking complimentary bottle was nice.

Walls were very thin or at least they didn't have good sound dampening which caused issues when a family next door had issues with their toddler during the night.

Wonderful iconic hotel

Hotel designed by Daniel Burnham, beautiful.
Comfort bed, fab feather pillows, the duvet, the view, the recycle, the food composting, I had problems with the tv which maintenance said was an IT issue, location, water bottle etc filler downstairs, loved the water bottle gift, tissues in the bathroom, BEDSIDE ADJUSTABLE READING LIGHTS, every staff member was super nice and helpful, plus the manager Marche(?).

The Brie bacon and cheese sandwich was pretty awful but the staff resurrected that. The Brie was pretty stinky as well. Deep fried bread was too heavy in oil…

Trouble with tv but nothing else

Great Place to stay.

The evening front desk manager was most welcoming and on top of everything. He was one of the best I have ever encountered and I travel a great deal. The property is clean, well maintained and interesting. The room was large, the bed was extremely comfortable. The amenities were spot on. We didn't eat at the restaurant, but we had a drink and the bartenders were friendly and knowledgeable. The location is fantastic. On the loop and within walking distance of every place we wanted to go.

The StayPineapple Ionic Hotel in Downtown Chicago offers up a fun experience with a perfect landing place after busy day

Historic building with lots of charm; very quiet room; fantastic view. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food at the Atwood restaurant was decent.

The only thing I would change would be early coffee availability. The Keurig supplies were stocked, but I’ve had bad experiences with in room coffee makers. Other Coffee options before 7 a.m. was hard to come by on weekdays; impossible on Sunday.

I would stay here again and these photos show the view from my room.

The location was great and I had a fabulous view from my bedroom window on the 15th floor.

I was disappointed with the food in the restaurant and the bar closing at 9pm.

Great location, clean rooms, annoying convenience fee

The hotel has a great location inside the loop. We had a clean room with a very nice view of State Street. The bed was very comfortable.

The hotel charges $25 per guest for a "convenience fee" to cover the incidentals you may use in the room, such as coffee and rights to use their bicycles. If the charge was optional, it wasn't made clear. The room had a fridge and a pod-based coffee maker which was not very good. We definitely did not get our $50 convenience fee money's worth.

Awesome - massive fan of the StayPineapple - thoroughly recommend

Cracking location - I use the staypineapple regularly for work trips to Chicago. It is fantastic, and the team are super friendly and attentive to your needs.

The bathrooms are a little dated, nothing wrong with them - but could do with a small refresh in due course.

Valet took too long.
