Athletic Association Hotel, Chicago

12 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60603, USA (show on map)

The Chicago Athletic Association hotel is a gorgeous, historic spot right on Michigan Avenue. Designed by architect Henry Ives Cobb and completed in 1893 for the World’s Fair, it spent over a century operating as an elite, men-only private club before being transformed into a boutique hotel.

The building’s architecture is a stunning nod to Venetian Gothic palaces. Inside, creators Roman and Williams meticulously preserved the club’s vintage soul, keeping original stained-glass windows, grand marble staircases, and ornate woodwork that transport you straight back to the Gilded Age.

Unique touches are everywhere. The old indoor pool has been cleverly repurposed into a vibrant event space, while the top floor features Cindy’s Rooftop, a highly popular terrace restaurant designed like an upscale lakehouse. It gives you incredible panoramic views of the city.

Location-wise, it is an explorer’s dream. Step outside and you are directly across from Millennium Park, the iconic “Bean” sculpture, and the Art Institute of Chicago. The Theater District and shopping along the Magnificent Mile are just a short walk away.

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“Gorgeously restored and imbued with a modern spirit of play, the Chicago Athletic Association captures many of the city’s most compelling attractions — architecture, history and food — under one handsome roof.”

Telegraph review:

“The Chicago Athletic Association Hotel is all dark wood, leather and retro-clubby public areas where whiskey glasses clink. It’s in the thick of downtown’s action — ace for business travelers and power sightseers. Playful touches like the Game Room keep things from getting too stuffy.”

Great location to many downtown sites as well as a beautiful facility

Great staff, beautiful building

Had to hike through the game room/restaurant with our suitcases to get to our room. Super awkward.

I have never been so angry at how my family and I were treated in 40 years of travel. The staff member seemed intent on

Small, tired rooms? Not the end of the world.

Soft trickle from the shower in an ancient hotel? Whatever.

Exceptional

The location was ok.

The elevators were on the slow side for the number of people using them.

Great location, exceptional staff, disappointing facility. Cindy’s/lobby lounge is great.

The staff was so great, understanding, and accommodating. Zero complaints about the people who work there. They made the stay great, and I felt very welcomed and taken care of.

I think it’s good to be aware not every room looks like what you see on the website. Our room had a very small window in the corner of the room. The room was extremely hot, and we could not control the temp bc the whole building had the heat on. Opening that one window was the saving grace. Also, not having the windows really changes the vibe/look of the room to more of a motel situation. The shower - no matter what you do- will drain water through the glass and the floor gets soaked every time. I’m not exaggerating- it’s a LOT of water. Then you have to dry it and a full sized towel is completely soaked. One of the elevators was broken. The one that works squeaks and is unsettling. All guests I encountered were annoyed with the elevator (things break. It happens. But still).

Passable

Clean and so wonderful to be in the same building as the wedding we attended. Staff couldn’t have been more attentive!

We were so hot in our room. The only way to cool off was to open windows and then we have a freezing breeze coming into our room. Didn’t feel very good. Couldn’t sleep well.

Stay here. Stay here often

It is iconic and just amazing

Valet hard to find on arrival Easy once I checked in. But stressful coming into hotel (and I’m a Chicago guy for a decade and it was tough). Maybe have a text or email that explains “if you plan on valet read here” Staff was super amazing and not stressed but not sure if they understood how it is from our perspective

Amazing way to see the great city!

Incredible roof top views. Our room was nice, and we didn't check out the hotel proper until the last day. Go to the roof, then visit each floor looking at the attractions mentioned on the elevator directory for many of the floors. Ever seen a 150 year old gym?

Nothing

Our stay was a bit of luxury to start our journey.

The hotel is as beautiful inside as it is outside. The wood paneling, carved arches and alcove overhangs, and the lead glass windows are spectacular. There are fireplaces with inglenooks, Persian rugs on the floor, and window seats along the windows in the lobby. Our kingsize bed was comfortable and we enjoyed having a couch. two settees, and a chaise lounge. The huge bathroom was appreciated as were the slippers provided. Watching the snow storm from the cosy inside was a real treat.

Would have liked tissue paper in the bathroom, a long shoe horn, ceramic cups instead of paper cups for tea and coffee, a light in the coffee/tea bar, and a reading lamp next to one of the settees or the couch.

Too expensive, room view misleading

Room was clean. Location was near all of our destinations. Only redeeming quality was the rooftop bar

Check-in started at 3. Our room wasn't available until 4. We had tickets to a show at 5 and barely had time to change and clean up. We paid for a "park view" room that was completely obstructed. TV was left crooked on the wall. Duvet cover was upside down so tag was in my face first night (I shouldn't have to remake the bed). Road noise (honking, sirens, etc. was extremely loud at all hours). Couldn't get waited on in the Game Room despite sitting right at the bar. We splurged on this property as it looked like it would be a luxury stay. Would never stay here again.

We loved this historic property walking distance from the Loop, South Loop, Mag Mile and Mill. Park.

Historic property with many enjoyable details. Bed was great. AC worked well. Privacy was very good. Design of unit (Jr. King Suite) was spacious, well laid out. Nice location across from Millennium Park. Drawing Room was both a fun place to dine or hang out.

The one TV that faced bed did not allow for one person to sleep while another person watched TV from either the living or the dining area.

Very poor

Location was great. Bellman was terrific.

Hotel manager and the concierge on Saturday evening were a disaster, giving me the wrong information about taxi service on Sunday.. Trying to book a room directly with the hotel rather than through a booking agent. Took me over 40 minutes to make contact even with a voice and then another 10 minutes to locate Central Hyatt reservation services. I'll not use Hyatt again

Very disappointing

Location was great and vibe is very cool.

Terrible noisy room close to street level. Complained but wasn’t able to move us until the next night. They really should have comped our room but gave us nothing.

Fairly underwhelming for the price

The location is great for tourist spots such as the aquarium, the art institute, skydeck and 360.

Overall we were pretty underwhelmed by the service (which was generally great in Chicago), the lack of room service on day 1 and the staff’s lack of interest. We wouldn’t choose to stay here again.

Very good

Broken phone and shade in bedroom on arrival. Staff couldn’t fix either and nothing additional was offered to make up for the inconveniences for a “suite” having these issues on check-in

It's all in the details

Every detail is considered. From the custom light fixtures to the thoughtful and hospitable doorman. I would come back anytime. Loved all the hooks in the bathroom and the custom cabinets and giant windows.

I was able to stay because of an online promotion. It was on the higher end of what my travel budget allows. But after having stayed at Palmer House -- similar budget -- I would come back again. My view wasn't great but not a deal breaker.
