Mandarin Oriental Qianmen, Beijing
The Mandarin Oriental Qianmen upends the usual luxury hotel blueprint by trading a single high-rise building for 42 independent siheyuan (traditional courtyard houses). Tucked inside the 600-year-old Caochang Hutong near the Forbidden City, the property is woven directly into a living neighborhood. To get from your room to the spa or restaurants, you actively stroll down public alleys alongside local residents going about their day.
The hotel’s striking architecture and interiors were designed by the renowned firm Cheng Chung Design (CCD). They meticulously preserved and restored the historic fabric of the neighborhood, ensuring that 83% of the courtyard structures are entirely original. The design seamlessly blends centuries-old timber beams and grey-tiled roofs with modern comforts like heated floors and expansive glass windows.
Adding to its mystique, the hotel grounds are steeped in cultural history. Several of the restored courtyards were once the private homes of prominent Chinese figures, including Peking Opera star Li Hongchun, film director Guo Baochang, and the family behind the famous Tong Ren Tang traditional medicine empire.
The property feels like a deep dive into old Beijing. Guests can enjoy Cantonese dining at Yan Garden or grab historically inspired cocktails at TIAO bar, all while being immersed in a beautifully preserved piece of China’s imperial past.
Expert reviews
“Chinese heritage meets modern luxury in the newly opened Mandarin Oriental Qianmen, Beijing. At just 42 rooms, the intimate hotel offers an immersive taste of tradition. Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed into a restored labyrinth of hutongs (narrow alleyways), complete with a Zen-like courtyard and a sleek, contemporary aesthetic that provides a calming retreat from the bustle just outside your front door.”
“There is no other place in the country where you can experience the charm of Beijing up close, offering a luxurious stay in the hutongs, or traditional alleyways where so much life happens in this bustling city.”
