Expert reviews

Travel+Leisure review:

“The hotel — starting with a name that references the ship that brought Bavarian immigrants to Baltimore at the turn of the century — is a creative ode to the city’s peculiarities. Its distinct design aesthetic, created entirely by Ash, is inspired by art deco palaces and the work of legendary movie director and Baltimore resident John Waters, among other things.”

CN Traveler review:

“The hotelier and design studio Ash loves to tell a good story. And the yarn that powers Ulysses pulls right from the hotel’s roots. It occupies the nine-story Latrobe Building, an early 20th-century Italianate pile in Baltimore’s vaguely European Mount Vernon neighborhood, where upper-crust bachelor boarders once laid their heads.”

What guests liked

All you need to know

The Ulysses, an avant-garde, high-end boutique hotel from hospitality firm ASH NYC, has found its home in the Latrobe Building, a 1912 apartment tower located in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon area.

The hotel draws its inspiration partly from the era when the building was constructed and subtly from the contemporaneous novel by James Joyce, which shares its name — not to mention the aesthetic sensibilities of John Waters, a filmmaker native to Baltimore.

This fusion of elements creates a unique ambiance for any boutique hotel, particularly in the traditionally conservative Baltimore. The outcome is undeniably unforgettable. While it’s decidedly different, it steers clear of descending into theme hotel cliches.

The internal decor is diverse, boasting pieces procured from places as far removed as India. And although the rooms cannot be classified as minimalist, they display a design focus that leans towards a slightly baroque style.

Ash Bar is the moniker of the dining establishment, operational from morning meal to supper and extended hours, offering traditional mid-Atlantic cuisine with an extensive list of beverages. The place that exudes more of a bar ambiance is Bloom’s, which is open from the late afternoon until the stroke of twelve, serving inventive mixed drinks in an opulent space adorned with mirrors.

Fabulous

Unusual and interesting decor - we thought it was very cool.. Also, food was very good (Ash Bar), and the location very convenient. Finally, the bed was VERY comfortable.

Some fitting in the room were loose, but it was minor. Also, be prepared for an ambiance with a bit less light in the room.

What it says on the tin!

Love this place - is what it says on the tin! I have tried unsuccessfully many times to find a better alternative during 2023 in the Mt Vernon/Charles North area.

Would be great to have a fridge to store leftover food, but a small price to pay for consistent standard of stay.

Excellent stay.

The cuisine was top-notch. I ate the majority of my meals there ( breakfast, lunch, and dinner). It's a great central location.

I had an enjoyable experience while residing at the Ulysesses while visiting my daughter. The accommodations, food, bar, location, and appointments were just what I needed after a long business project. The staff was personal and professional in an old-school hotel kinda way. I definitely will be back.

Overall a magical place to visit and I can’t wait to come back again soon.

I thought the hotel was incredibly charming, from the blue leopard print carpet in our room to the custom canopy bed and matching closet. The devil is in the details, and this place absolutely nails the luxury and comfortable charm that the designers are going for. I will definitely be recommending a stay to others, as the staff were courteous and helpful, the room was beautiful, and the lobby and bar, Blooms, were so well-crafted.

Two small qualms: the toilet is slightly too tall to get proper position for ideal bowel movement; and the restaurant, Ash Bar was understaffed and overseated during the Sunday brunch, which is when you would expect that they would have ample support. Try as they might, they forgot parts of our order and apologized constantly - hard for a weekend brunch which is so well advertised and priced for a luxe experience.

Beautiful property. Staff was so helpful. The front desk supervisor helped me fix my tv so I could watch the World Series. Bed was super comfortable. I would definitely stay here again.

Gorgeous, warm, and inviting

I can't say enough about how excellent Ulysses is—from the lovely atmosphere, to the awesome staff, to its perfect location. Once you walk in the door, you know you're somewhere special; the lobby details are lovely, and it's easy to spot the big blue awning outside when you're trying to find the place (very helpful when you're first learning your way around the neighborhood). The staff was truly great. I really liked everyone I interacted with; they were very warm and friendly. I especially liked the folks at the front desk. They had my room ready early, which of course isn't guaranteed, but was so nice after a long train ride. The room itself was adorable and very clean; I had a Queen, and everything was done in up pinks. The toiletries they provide–shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, and lotion–smelled heavenly, and were a nice little touch. I also had a beautiful view of the city. This was my first time in Baltimore and I wasn't entirely sure about the location, but the Mount Vernon neighborhood is fantastic, and Ulysses is perfectly situated in the middle of it. You're just a few blocks from the Walters Art Museum, the Peabody Library, the history and culture museum, and other cool attractions. You also have a fair amount of food options nearby, including Greek place right across the street, and some very pretty spots like the Owl Bar, and an excellent Spanish restaurant in walking distance. There's also the hotel restaurant, which was good for breakfast and a pre-dinner cocktail (I didn't try their lunch or dinner, but the menu sounded good). I had such a good experience with Ulysses that I actually decided to stay another night, which the staff was wonderfully accommodating about. This is definitely going to be my go-to hotel in the city. Highly recommend!

Excellent hotel, great bed. Be weary of ash bar

The room was the perfect size in a city - cozy without compromising comfort. Also the bed was amazingly comfortably and I’d like to buy the quilt.

Claustrophobic elevator that I know can’t be changed. I also would love if there was a larger tv experience for those who want to engage with entertainment. Also it’s got an old world vibe but you could still engage modern technology with tv casting of things to be watched without paying for cable. My worst experience was at ash bar. Just horrible. The most disjointed and unfocused dining experience of recent memory. The table beside us was served the wrong food twice before we were even brought coffee. After an hour of being ignored and still lacking coffee we left.

Great for a night in Baltimore

Things we loved: -the staff were so friendly -the three bars in the hotel were super cool -location is great and near all of the things we wanted to do/see - parking, although not on site, was located very close and was reasonably priced

Our only (small) dislike was that the room itself was very tiny and somewhat difficult to navigate around.

A quaint and asthetically botique hotel with exceptional services all around with a distinction.

The breakfast there on Sunday afternoon was exceptional. Fresh eggs, bread, and those duck-pressed and lightly fried potato cubes were awesome. The Junior Sous Chef came out and greeted and presented a wonderful chocolate ganache dessert. It made my Sunday afternoon much more pleasant and relaxing.

There was nothing not to like. The accommodations were perfect.

Staff was amazing. We had our car broken into at a parking lot. Totally not the hotels fault. The staff provided us with supplies to cover broken window for free. Offered to help. Very compassionate to a bad situation. Thank you Ulysses for your help.

Nothing. It was great

A hidden gem in Baltimore

The location was great. The suite was just splendid. The linens were comfortable. The towels were plush. The staff was pleasant and responsive. I hope to be able to spend time at the bar next visit as everyone seemed to be really enjoying themselves when I arrived.

The bathroom product's scents are a bit strong. I had forgotten my own soap and the scent of their soap did play well with my lotions, deodarent, etc.
