The William Fell, Baltimore

888 S Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21231, USA (show on map)

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“This old Fell’s Point sailors’ hotel has been converted into a lovely inn with Federal-style furniture and four-poster beds. It’s got the best of both of Baltimore’s worlds, with historic and nautical details abounding on the one hand, and plenty of modern amenities on the other.”

Fodors review:

“This inn is an upright anchor at the center of the action in funky Fells Point. By joining together buildings constructed between the late 1770s and the 1920s, the owners created a structure that resembles a small, European-style hotel, with lots of character and quirks.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Baltimore.

All you need to know

If you are looking for a cool place to crash in Charm City, The William Fell Baltimore (part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection) is an absolute gem. Nestled right in the heart of the historic Fells Point neighborhood, this boutique hotel drops you right onto scenic cobblestone streets overlooking the bustling waterfront. It is the ultimate spot if you want to soak up the city’s lively, old-school maritime vibe.

The building itself is steeped in layers of history, originally constructed from eight interconnected late-18th-century structures. Over the years, the property has lived quite a few lives—serving as a ship chandlery (a retail dealer in ships’ supplies), a vinegar bottling factory, a boarding house for theater actors, and even a YMCA where Mercy nuns cared for sick sailors. It was first converted into a cozy bed and breakfast in 1985 before its transformation into the hotel you see today.

Inside, the unique features are a total nod to the past. The hotel boasts “The Stone Room,” which showcases original 18th-century stonework, and a cozy lobby fireplace perfect for chilling out. If you head underground, you will find a hidden historic speakeasy that is perfect for late-night drinks, while the upper-floor event spaces treat you to a private wraparound balcony with sweeping views of the harbor.

But here is the most fun fact: it is widely considered one of the most haunted hotels in Maryland! Guests and staff have swapped spooky tales for years, reporting everything from phantom butlers knocking on doors to the floating apparitions of old-time sailors wandering the hallways. Whether you are there for the ghost stories, the deep history, or just the waterfront views, it’s a pretty unforgettable stay.

Rabbit warren with squeaky floors….

Stayed there many times over the years. I always enjoy the rabbit warren layout. I miss the guy in the lobby dressed in 17th century clothes talking history.

Dirty windows in the dining room. All of the staff were nice and pleasant. They rotated through everyday which was a little disconcerting to deal with new people everyday … any personal rapport was truly lost..

The Inn was quiet and cozy. An excellent place to stay. Great bar downstairs called The Anchor Bar. Bartender Steve is a great ambassador for the city and the Inn

Quality of stay varies depending on what room you get

-Great location -Front desk staff were friendly -Nice bed

-Thin walls -They gave me a room between the elevators and the ice machine which made things pretty loud -My shower did not heat up half the time -My last night there I was awoken at 11 PM by banging on my door. Some dude claiming to be maintenance needed to check my fuse box? What?? At 11 PM??? After checking that the front desk called me, I let him in, he went in and said "oh I actually can't access from this side- nevermind". So yeah I just love being forced to wake up the middle of the night, let a stranger into my room, only for them to make a mistake. Super disrespectful. Not even any offer for compensation for messing up

The size of the room, the beds were so comfortable, the decor was beautiful. The staff was so friendly. Great location in the heart of Fells.

The alarm test, which we expected, lasted for an hour

The environment of the hotel (omg! The cobbled streets), the Saturday markets, the ferries, places and events that took

Omg! I call this my modern classic style hotel. From the outside to the inside, to our room, it was different, and highly romantic. The location of the hotel itself is surrounded by beautiful sceneries, shops, the water, walking trails, eateries, and I don’t want to forget to mention that everywhere we went has its own history. To say the harbor area was breathtakingly gorgeous both day and night, is an understatement .

We loved everything about this property.

Passable

Clean room and pleasant staff.

No option for parking unless you paid 60.00 for valet or a pay to park parking garage. Wi-Fi is only free if you sign up for the Hilton Rewards Program. After the amount we paid for a one night stay it was discouraging to find out that there would be additional costs for the parking and wi-fi, when it states parking on site and free wi-fi.

Perfect location for walking around and having access to all the yummy food spots. Good room assignment away from elevat

Location, comfort, value

No pool, valet parking is pricey, needs better soundproofing/blackout curtains for windows, needs a dedicated lounge space with comfortable couches and furniture in their tavern with the bar—not just tables and chairs by the bar.

I may try it again, but not sure.

I enjoyed the breakfast. There was a lot to choose from and it was delicious. The location was exceptional, and the staff was great.

There was no temperature control in my room. It was so! hot! I finally just turned the heat off entirely and it still stayed hot.
