This building has led many lives since it was built in 1916, serving as a pottery kiln, a garment factory, and a pharmacy warehouse before being transformed into the first Ace Hotel in the Southern Hemisphere. Architects Bates Smart preserved the original 10-storey structure while adding an additional eight floors, creating a striking blend of industrial heritage and modern design.
The interior, helmed by Flack Studio, is a love letter to Australian culture and modernism. The design draws inspiration from the work of architect Robin Boyd and the vibrant landscapes of Indigenous artist Albert Namatjira. Guests are greeted by a palette of warm ochres, sunset oranges, and deep terracotta, complemented by reclaimed brick and abundant greenery. One unique feature is the sunken lounge in the lobby, which evokes the laid-back, social aesthetic of 1970s Australian suburbs.
Beyond its walls, the hotel is a culinary hotspot. Its rooftop restaurant, Kiln, offers a fusion of Italian, Japanese, and Southeast Asian flavors, while the ground-floor space, LOAM, focuses on seasonal, locally sourced produce. The hotel’s art program is also highly curated, featuring bold works from various contemporary Australian artists.
Ideally positioned in Surry Hills, the hotel is just steps away from the bustling culinary scenes of Thai Town and Chinatown. You are also within easy walking distance of Hyde Park, the Sydney CBD, and the cultural hubs of Redfern, making it a perfect, central home base for exploring the city.

The property is qwerky and has a great vibe about the place. The bed was extremely comfy the place was clean and the staff were exceptionally helpful and pleasant. Loam cafe was also a great place for breakfast. It was also refreshing to have great products as part of the mini bar in the room.
Room was slightly smaller than I’d like although I did choose the small room. A complimentary bottle of water would have been nice.

Great stay and a wonderful venue to celebrate my son’s 40th birthday.
So unique, comfortable and the staff were so helpful and friendly.
Brian was particularly helpful when my 82 year old husband had difficulty with the stairs. So, so nice.
Food was great with great coffee and great cocktails.
Lighting in room toilet and shower was insufficient.

A warm, fun and friendly place to stay in the middle of the city.
Love that they allow dogs (for a fee). Love the vibe downstairs, the Photo Booth, the library. Great service. Impeccable location.

I want to live at the ace hotel
Glorious. Vibes everywhere. Room’s are fun with a record play and records to play. Excellent location in the CBD. Walking distance to Surry Hills, darlinghurst and Paddington. Smells nice. Great coffee down stairs. DJs on a Friday. If you can get access to their Black Friday sales- grab them and stay.

Perfect for a birthday celebration in the city
Comfy and chic. The lobby is great for happy hour drinks in the afternoon. Staff were super friendly and polite.
A light from the aircon was super bright when you turn the lights off at night time but that is really pushing it to find something not to like about this place.

All in all comfortable. Quiet room and large and roomy with high ceiling. Good location. Staff friendly and helpful
Being able to have our dog to stay with us while travelling.
Separate toilet fantastic. Shower water pressure and temperature fantastic . Great lighting in shower and loved it being separate and enclosed so water contained. Bed, doona and pillows super comfortable.
How loud music and bar noise was in foyer while trying to check in, but quieter once moved around to Lift and quiet in room which was fantastic

Nice vibe for weekend away
The staff were so attentive, helpful, and kind. The vibe and the common spaces are really inviting.
Really happy. The toilet and shower are quite dark, and there is lotion but no soap by the sink. Maybe a bit more strange than issues.
For those on business travel, there was no desk in the room. We didn't need that so for a weekend away, it was perfect.

Comfortable, fun place to stay for a Sydney city escape.
Great friendly helpful staff. Rooms well appointed, clean, and beds are super comfortable. Good soundproofing, and block out drapes. Nice to have the kimonos in the room. Good location, easy to get around Sydney by train and bus from here. Great bar and resturant. Has a terrific vibe.
Not a lot, if anything the bathroom was a bit dark (not well lit), but it was fine.
