The Dante House, Naples

Piazza Dante Alighieri, 22, 80135 Naples, Italy. (show on map)

The Dante House in Naples is a unique, design-forward retreat located in the historic center. Set within a beautifully renovated 18th-century noble home, it straddles the line between a luxury boutique hotel and an upscale bed and breakfast. Its architecture is defined by striking features, such as 6.5-meter-high ceilings, original frescoes, and eight private balconies that offer guests a front-row seat to the city’s pulse.

The interior design is a bold, modern interpretation of Neapolitan history. The aesthetic blends contemporary, handcrafted furnishings with ancient architectural elements, creating an environment that feels both sophisticated and deeply rooted in its surroundings. The property focuses heavily on the details, with custom pieces that honor the building’s heritage while providing modern comfort.

Location-wise, it is hard to beat. Positioned right on the famous Piazza Dante, the property is steps away from the Dante metro station. This makes it a perfect starting point for exploring the city’s treasures, including the nearby Naples National Archaeological Museum and the renowned Sansevero Chapel, both of which are within easy walking distance.

Beyond the aesthetics, the hotel is known for its intimate, personalized hospitality. Guests often highlight the breakfast, which features homemade yogurt and fresh pastries sourced from local artisanal bakeries. Whether you are wandering through the nearby ancient gate of Port’Alba or simply relaxing on your balcony watching the lively Neapolitan street life below, The Dante House serves as a peaceful, elevated sanctuary in the middle of a bustling, vibrant city.

Expert reviews

Telegraph review:

“Setting the pace for Naples’ newer generation of upscale b&bs, the design-forward Dante House is ahead of the pack. Located in the heart of the city, its alchemy of chic modern interiors, disarming Neapolitan hospitality and refreshingly different breakfast make it a contender for the best place to stay in the city.”

Lonely Planet review:

“Owners Roberto Mastrangelo and Richard Glenn Killy collaborated with artist Gigi Cocciola to create this design-literate B&B. Set in an 18th-century palazzo, it successfully matches old and new, from ceiling frescoes and original timber-beam ceilings, to filament bulbs, upcycled-timber bedheads and geometric canvases. “

Best in Napoli

The location was better than we could have ever imagined. Besides taking the train to Pompéi, every other single thing was within walking distance. The room was beautiful with a terrace overlooking the piazza, everything was extremely easy to access. The best wine shop we ended up buying from was the one right outside Dante house. The staff were extremely nice and helpful, and we really enjoyed the breakfast they prepared! Highly recommend!

On two occasions we attempted to have a shower but didn’t have hot water, we spoke to Teresa at reception who immediately dealt with the problem

Excellent location, extremely welcoming staff, and remarkable facilities

The Dante House is an exquisite place, in a stunningly central area, with great, comfortable, and impeccably clean facilities and effective services, including the friendliest staff one could possibly ask for, and a delicious breakfast filled with local flavors.

Fantastic location, modern clean accommodation

Location was fantastic, right in the middle of town. Not much to look at from outside but the rooms are fantastic.
We had a 1 double, 2 singles, 1x sofa bed. That was more than enough and very spacious for 4 adults and a tall teenager. Great stay!

Characterful hotel with great staff and location.

Excellent location with easy walk to lots of the old town. A characterful property that has been nicely restored. Friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable beds.

Parking requires a short walk with luggage, but this is typical for Naples.

The best place to stay to explore Naples

I stayed in room 6, which was a triple room, and it was BEAUTIFUL! 2 balconies overlooking the vibrant Piazza Dante, and a beautiful room and bathroom.
The staff are very helpful, the breakfast is delicious, this is my new favourite place to stay in Naples

Nothing, it’s perfect

We had a very nice stay as the rooms were lovely, everything was central. Lovely continental breakfast. Will stay again.

Inside the building it looks and feel great. We had original fresco which was grand. The staff were very informative and friendly. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Great little area to sit down and do work or relax with a drink which is available to help your self.

The outside of the building is too crowded and lots of trash lie around. Looks messy and rough, but it’s not the fault of the hotel. The lift was a bit sceptical to be used by ourselves. But the staff will help if asked.

Great apt with all you need, central location, best to visit during non-hot season

Apt and staff were great, with all we need for a nice, relaxing and refreshing stay. Breakfast was also very good. Free coffee and water available all the time, other items also available and not expensive. The entry to the building doesn't look great but the inner patio, wide stone stairs and the whole building (it has a lift as well) is quite charming and isolated from the outside noise.
Naples has an amazing history, there is plenty to see and do, people are very nice and welcoming. We prioritized activities away from the heat since it was July so we visited Napoli Soterranea (loved it) and made a workshop for learning how to make Pinsa Napolitana (totally recommend). You can eat and drink very well mostly everywhere.
Very easy to get around with Google Maps, we used the metro and funicular, mostly.

Location is super central but is is also a very busy and touristic spot, so it's very dirty, with a lot of people all the time. In July, it was hot so the city in general smelled a lot like garbage (not sure if this happens all year round or just when it's hot outside).
There is a kindergarten next to the apartments so we heard some noise during the morning.

Ended up not visiting Pompei and Amalfi this time because it was too hot and busy, but just because we preferred not to. We talked to people who went to Pompei early in the morning and they said it wasn't bad, others went to Amalfi and Ravello during the week (weekends to be avoided).

The warmest of welcomes in the craziest of cities.

Immediately felt welcomed by Teresa who kept us fully informed every step. Room was stunning with a lovely balcony overlooking the square and the most exquisite fresco on the vaulted ceiling. Breathtaking. They also own a small bar/cafe around the corner where you are offered a welcome prosecco and a 10% discount on food and drink on your first visit. Staff there are every bit as good as the hotel staff and the prices are some of the best nearby. DO NOT MISS. Right on the edge of the old city and a stroll away from shopping. Great breakfast and while no mini bar, there was a communal bar with an honesty box. Espresso machine, tea facilities and snacks available 24 hours in the breakfast room. FRESHLY SQUEEZED orange juice. The details matter and these guys do detail. Hugely recommended.

The room was above a take away restaurant (but really no issue during our stay) and opened directly onto the breakfast room. While we believed that there would be a spill over of noise, our fears were completely unfounded.

A beautiful authentic Neapolitan experience in a great historic location.

We loved the traditional Neapolitan apartment experience. Located right on Piazza Dante there are several dining options, pharmacy, gelato, metro station and lots of activity. The room is quiet and comfortable with an amazing breakfast spread every morning and snacks available all day. Walking distance to the National Archeological Museum which is a great place to spend an afternoon and don’t forget to visit the Napoli Underground as well. The Dante House staff provided a map and great suggestions. The Piazza stays active until midnight but is very safe and the room is pretty sound proof so it was not an issue. If you are traveling in from another area or visiting Pompeii, the Dante House can arrange a car service which we highly recommend. Enzo was our driver from Positano to Naples and to Pompeii and to the airport. Fast and friendly service which saved us a lot of time and stress navigating the ferry and trains!

The hotel is located on the 1st floor which is not the ground floor. There were no clear signs for property in the courtyard. We called and someone came down to meet us and provided coins for the lift. They are very helpful so don’t hesitate to contact them to assist.

Great hotel in heart of Naples

Very nice hotel right in the heart of the Naples action. Surrounded by shops, bars, restaurants, and a 5 min walk to Spaccanapoli. It's worth it to stay here for the location alone. Right next to a metro stop (Dante), and 10 min taxi from airport.

The hotel itself is also great. It's such a small place (6 rooms) that the staff immediately recognise you. Strong air conditioning in every room. Rooms are large, clean, and unique. Rooms are also quiet despite the busy neighbourhood.

Staff is friendly, speak English, and very helpful. Willing to make recommendations, give directions, etc... Not pushy. They go above and beyond.

Breakfast is nice. Eggs cooked to order and breads, sandwiches, cereals available for self-serve. Espresso machine available, or you can request a drink.

Laundry (not dry cleaning) available on site for €19/per bag.

Staff think a cortado is the same as an espresso macchiato, which is just not correct.

Front door to hotel can be difficult to find.

Awesome experience - would do it again!

The stay was perfect, next to metro station in the historical centre of Naples, you are 20-30 min of walking from almost everywhere in the city. The hosts were very friendly and helpfull, good breakfast, coffee whenever you want, they cleaned the room every day. The room was big and could accommodate 4 people because it had 2 beds on a second floor in the room. The room was clean with mixed modern and renovated style. There are plenty of bars, cafès and restaurants nearby. I would visit again if i could.

Great location, but noisy at night and underwhelming breakfast

The location was lovely and incredibly convenient for getting around Naples and visiting the major sights. The room was spacious and well proportioned, with plenty of room to relax.

The noise from Piazza Dante was annoying, with late-night partying, shouting and the sound of motorbikes coming and going all the time. The beds in the room could have been more comfortable as well although they weren;t that bad. I was underwhelmed by the breakfast — despite all the glowing reviews. It featured somewhat stale supermarket-style croissants and bad-tasting coffee.

First time visit to Napoli.

Loved my stay. Very central location. Easy walk to restaurants and many other sites, including port to take ferries. Clean hotel, amazing room, felt more like an apt. Will definitely return. Very nice staff.

I loved everything.

Wonderful stay directly in Naples' city center in a beautiful Palazzo.

We stayed in the room called “Tony Levis” with two balconies directly above the Piazza Dante and it was just wonderful!

- wonderful renovated Palazzo with high ceilings, wall art and beautiful interior and bathroom
- great communication with the staff
- lovely breakfast buffet (we asked for vegan options after the booking process and the staff got some especially for us. thank you a lot <3 )
- very clean room and bath
- comfortable bed
- as close to the center as it can get
- greatly isolated windows (still, if you’re very sensitive to traffic noise or people having fun outside: bring earplugs or consider NOT travelling to Naples ;) )

One of the best hotels I have stayed in!

The staff really made this hotel special, they couldn’t do enough for you! The breakfast was also very good.

It was quite loud at the front of the hotel, maybe it was because we were there on a holiday weekend. If you are light sleeper best to chose a room at the back of the hotel!

Unique place in the heart of Naples

It's an old residential building with extremely tall ceilings and a room (No. 6) facing Piazza Dante right in the centre of Naples! You can enjoy a glass of wine on the balcony watching the life beneath. The location is very central and also easy to get to the parking they suggested. The communal breakfast area has snacks throughout the day and the breakfast itself had everything. Friendly and helpful staff. You can leave your luggage at the reception after check out. Great stay!
