HENRI Hotel, Hamburg
The HENRI Hotel in Hamburg is a stylish boutique retreat tucked into a beautiful brick office building in the city centre. Opened in 2013 as the brand’s flagship location, it masterfully channels a 1950s “Kontorhaus” office atmosphere. With its retro-chic aesthetic, it feels more like a private home than a standard hotel, featuring vintage touches like old-school rotary telephones and custom-designed wallpaper.
One of the hotel’s standout features is its focus on community and comfort. Instead of a traditional restaurant, guests are invited to the “Kontorküche” (hotel kitchen), a social space where homemade evening meals are served, and a 24/7 “honesty bar” allows you to help yourself to drinks whenever you please. For a bit of relaxation, there is a small, private wellness area on the seventh floor, complete with a sauna and steam bath, offering a quiet escape with views over the Hamburg rooftops.
The interior design, curated by Marc-Ludolf von Schmarsow, pays meticulous attention to detail to ensure an authentic mid-century experience. Even the staff uniforms, designed by Oliver Kresse, echo the style of the 1950s, adding to the immersive, nostalgic charm of the property.
Location-wise, the hotel is perfectly positioned between the bustling Mönckebergstraße shopping mile and the historic Rathausmarkt. You are just a short walk away from major landmarks like the iconic St. Michael’s Church, the UNESCO-listed Speicherstadt warehouse district, and the stunning Elbphilharmonie concert hall, making it a fantastic base for exploring Hamburg’s maritime history.
Expert reviews
“Kidney-shaped tables, plush armchairs, vintage typewriters – the Henri channels the 1950s so successfully that you half expect to run into Don Draper. Its 65 rooms and studios are a good fit for urban lifestyle junkies who like the alchemy of modern comforts and retro design.”
“Concealed down a side street not far from the main station, this small boutique hotel, with its retro rooms, furniture, and phones, will undoubtedly please fans of film noir and Mad Men. Guest rooms are softly lit, their dark, wooden chairs and cabinets offset by light green walls, gray curtains, and white wood panels behind the beds.”
“The Henri is owned by the same company behind the stately Louis C. Jacob hotel. Markedly different from its sister property, it offers 65 stylish and highly comfortable rooms and suites in a central location, a rooftop spa with great views, plus warm and professional service.”
