Kimpton Clocktower Hotel, Manchester

Oxford Street, Manchester, M60 7HA, United Kingdom. (show on map)

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“The Clocktower Hotel offers contemporary comfort and boutique-hotel chic for history buffs. After a renovation costing more than 25 million pounds, the Clocktower has kept intact the lovely period faience in hallways, and the glass-domed ceiling in the spacious lobby, while converting former clerks’ offices into wood-paneled bedrooms with soaring ceilings and sleek subway-tile bathrooms.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 hours in Manchester.

Telegraph review:

“In an imposing terracotta Victorian building, with ornate original features and one of Manchester’s most popular bars, the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel combines classic good looks with a cool streak. And, despite its grand public areas, it’s warm and welcoming, with thoughtful extras for all guests, from families to dogs.”

What guests liked

All you need to know

With a variety of stunning spaces, Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is particularly aesthetically-pleasing. Nestled in a Victorian-era building dating back to the 1890s, Kimpton Clocktower Hotel has unparalleled craftsmanship, apparent in every room. Guests can enjoy the greenhouse-like lounge with incredibly high, opaque ceilings, bold-tiled flooring, and full-size indoor trees. The hotel restaurant’s crown molding and vintage wooden floors create a space filled with character. Vintage wood paneling in many of the guest rooms adds to this historical hotel’s charm. In the hotel ballroom, you can take in the largest event space in the North of England.

There are many different floor plans to choose from throughout the hotel, but each room comes with tasteful decor, private bathrooms, WiFi, and satellite TVs. Depending on the guest room, you will likely find fun pops of color, different-textured materials, exposed finishes, and incredibly comfortable bedding.

Located on the lively Oxford Road, you will only be a short walk away from abundant attractions, shops, and restaurants. However, the onsite dining does not disappoint. The Refuge Dining Room offers a vibrant space to enjoy an eclectic meal, or check out The Winter Garden for afternoon tea in an elegant environment. You will be within walking distance from several sights during your stay, like the Palace Theater, Bridgewater Hall, Library Theater, Canal Street, and the Manchester Art Gallery.

Overall lovely experience would stay again. This place would be amazing if they had a pool or maybe some massage rooms a

Lovely place with a fancy reception and bar. It smells amazing, is great for photos, and the gym was super clean with brand-new equipment

The rooms were a little cold. I personally didn’t mind as I prefer a cooler room, but a few of my friends did mention it a couple of times. It’s to be expected though, given it’s an older clocktower building. Breakfast was very mediocre and a high price for £22 wasn’t great, but it’s nice to have the option if you’re tired in the morning stayed for two nights didn’t have it on the second

Amazing place to stay, but concerned about management decisions in recent times.

I love this hotel and have been coming to it for years and years, from the days of the Principal takeover and since then once Kimpton took over. Superb location and building fabric / history. I love the rooms, the design, the staff friendliness and the room service dining. Everything about the offer is top-notch.

There are two things I have been disappointed with in recent visits - and both are ownership decisions. One - the dynamic pricing experiment that saw prices of up to £1000 for an extra night's stay being quoted. Two - the recent news about staff conditions / complaints in the Manchester Evening News. Good places need to be authentically good all the way through, especially in a city that has always fought so hard for workers' rights. Very disappointing.

Beautiful hotel, fantastic decor, very clean and thoughtful extras

The hotel had lots of character, fantastic decor with lots of individual touches, very clean, well maintained, thoughtful extras, smells great. Fabulous stay

No clear way to queue to check in/out allowing people to jump the queue as can get busy. There were 3 different desks to check out and I stood in the middle to feed to all 3 desks as what happened on check in yet 3 people were allowed to go to the left hand desk in front of the queue and the receptionists appeared to be oblivious/chose not to address it, a bit frustrating

sensational

Not my first stay at his incredible hotel. It is always welcoming and friendly on arrival. The smell of the air defuser is phenomenal in the reception. Rooms are large and always clean. I like to add a little touch either with balloons or some fizz for our arrival so this extra is great and very personal.

The rooms are INCREDIBLE, my only note is for the beds. They move so easily so it would be great to have them secured or have a break on the wheels to stop them from moving. Sitting on the bed to do your shoes to find yourself sitting on the floor wasn’t a great experience (insert laugh emoji) haha.

Highly recommended

Stunning building, lovely details such as the complimentary snacks in the room and daily social hours with drink on the house. Great location and the bar is one of the best hotel bars we’ve been in. Hats off to Dionne in the bar who served us both nights. She was very helpful in making recommendations for our stay and also made some tasty cocktails (impressive bar skills too!).

Very good

Staff were excellent and everything is finished to a very high standard. Building is beautiful and the gorgeous Victorian heritage is set off to good effect.

The curtains in the room were really difficult to open and close due to the height of the window and drop of the curtain. Our room was very near the bridge carrying the trains for station and it was quite noisy.

Everything, it was perfect for my friensd 60th birthday celebration. The room surpassed our expectations. The staff were so friendly and helpful the hotel is stunning, and has incorporated the old with the new, in a very stylish way.

Whilst it was a good heartybreakfast i just wish it had been warmer. That was just unlucky on our part

Exceptional

We were in town for a concert and needed early access to our room to get ready on time - the staff were very accommodating and arranged an early check in. We booked a room with two double beds. It was huge, clean, had all amenities you could need and was very comfortable. It was centrally located and only minutes away from Manchester Oxford Street train station. Breakfast was great. Lots of choices and very tasty and the waiting staff at breakfast were really efficient and friendly.

Only one very small issue, the lighting in the room. It felt like either the room was too bright to be cosy or too dark to see properly. But really that's just my personal preference.

Lovely stay

This hotel is beautiful, the staff are very welcoming, always smiling. The bedroom was lovely, beds comfortable and the bathroom nice and clean. Really appreciated the snacks in the room. Breakfast was very good with lots of choice, my son really enjoyed the porridge that required ordering.... the young man serving us in the Garden conservatory was so hard working and always polite and smiling.

The ONLY problem I had was the coffee machine in the room wasn't working properly and there were no sachets of instant to use instead. Very minor, I had my coffee with breakfast.

Beautiful hotel

The venue was beautiful and clean. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The bed was very comfortable.

The shower head in our room was really loose and leaking, I was worried it would fall off. The hallways were also freezing. Room could have been bigger for the money.

Exceptional

Phenomenal historic building that's been converted into a stunning hotel. The location was perfect for our visit and is very central. Nice touches such as the evening social hour and unique amenities in a very well equipped and comfortable room. Breakfast was incredible - freshly cooked well sourced food.

Being extremely picky - the room could have done with a floor lamp as you either had to have the main light on or the beside lights which didn't give enough brightness. The shower wasn't the most powerful on 'rain shower' setting but was hot enough and the other setting worked fine. Would have been better to be able to help yourself to tea / coffee at breakfast rather than having to ask staff who were attentive but clearly busy.

What an awesome historic building.

What a beautiful building. A real Architectual gem of the Victorian era. Great staff. Having the techno gym bench in the room was great and allowed me to pump some iron before I went to work in the morning :-).

Nothing. Unlike some other reviewers, I don’t believe you can deliberately choose to be in a historic building and then complain that you’re in a historic building, ignoring the obvious compromises in terms of structure and practicality…

Fabulous

Staff were lovely, chatty and helpful at whatever time of day. Room was lovely, really comfortable bed, plenty of space, plugs and covered anything you might need. What was helpful was the sign explaining what else was available, as we needed to borrow a phone charger. We parked in Oxford Street Car park which was at a discounted rate through the hotel, easy walking distance to the hotel and super secure.

Minimal gripes with the room and hotel, to be honest. I'd have put a separate hand soap by the sink as it took a minute to figure out where it was over the bath.

Beautiful, grand hotel with cool bar in great location.

This is a very grand, beautiful hotel in a great location. We have stayed here a few times and each time in a different room. This time our room was large with period features. We had a good view of the city and railway. The room was quiet and comfortable. The bathroom was large with a shower over the bath which was great. There were lots of free toiletries and snacks which is a lovely touch. Guests are also invited to a 'meet and greet' session each day for free drinks and snacks.

The room was a little bit cold and it was tricky to control the temperature. The bathroom felt a little exposed because although the large windows did have net curtains when the lights were on there were no blackout blinds.

Fantastic building sympathetically converted to a hotel, to transport links, restaurants and entertainment

Return visitor

Hotel was great - perfect location for us - only reason for marking down the cleanliness score was that on the corridor to our room there was a used cocktail glass on the window sill for the entire duration of our stay - similar there was a used coffee cup on the walk from reception to the bar for a good many hours - room/reception/bar and restaurant all clean.
