Hotel Alexandra, Copenhagen

H. C. Andersens Blvd. 8, 1553 København, Denmark (show on map)

Smack dab in the center of Copenhagen, Hotel Alexandra is an absolute paradise for anyone obsessed with Scandinavian design. Operating since 1910 inside a grand neoclassical building that originally housed fashionable apartments, the property serves as a living, breathing museum. It is actually the only boutique hotel in the capital dedicated entirely to mid-century Danish design, holding one of the largest private vintage furniture collections in the world.

The hotel’s modern identity was shaped by general manager Jeppe Mühlhausen, a former art exhibition curator who spent years traveling the globe to source authentic pieces from the 1940s through the 1970s. Step into the lobby and you are instantly inside a retro time capsule, surrounded by iconic pieces like Hans Wegner’s Papa Bear chair and Jørgen Høvelskov’s Harp chair. Guests are encouraged to pull up a seat, pick out a vintage record to spin on the turntable, and flip through the hotel’s library of art books while enjoying a complimentary glass of evening wine.

Each of the 61 rooms is completely unique, but the crown jewels of the property are the dedicated designer suites. You can book rooms styled specifically as tributes to legendary Danish architects, featuring authentic masterworks—like the psychadelic pink Verner Panton lounge, or the Arne Jacobsen room, which features his famous Egg, Swan, and Ant chairs. Even the room keys add to the vintage charm, still using the heavy, original brass keychains from the early 1900s.

The location on H.C. Andersens Boulevard puts the best of the city right at your doorstep. You are just a three-minute stroll from the Rådhuspladsen metro station and the historic City Hall Square. The enchanting, 19th-century Tivoli Gardens amusement park sits practically around the corner, and the famous Strøget shopping street is easily accessible on foot, making it the perfect design-centric base for exploring Copenhagen.

Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“The furniture of Danish design deities such as Arne Jacobsen, Ole Wanscher and Kaare Klint graces the interiors of the crisp, refined yet homey Alexandra. Rooms are effortlessly cool, each decked out in a mix of mid-century Danish pieces.”

Telegraph review:

“This good-value central hotel is kitted out from top to toe with vintage furniture from the 1950s and ’60s – making it not just a friendly, convenient place to stay but also a masterclass in Danish design. You might not know your Juhl from your Jacobsen when you arrive, but you probably will by the time you leave.”

Great location and wonderful staff which was enough to overlook the negatives.

The location and the staff

It was a little tired looking and the shower leaked all over the bathroom floor and sometimes leaked into the main living area.

Great hotel and location, but very noisy!!

Great location and the staff were amazing….very friendly and helpful. We also loved the ‘wine hour’ between 5pm and 6pm!!

Very noisy - it is very central and that’s to be expected. But the thrash metal coming from the bar over the road was something else!!

Room was comfortable, but lacking plug sockets.

Central location but ordinary

Central location and possibility to leave the luggage

Even I booked a superior than ordinary room the room looked very ordinary. Asked the receptionist whether there has been a mix up, the receptionist was insistant that no it is how their rooms are. She promised to change the room after 1 night but there was no follow-up from them.

Great location, comfortable. I would stay again.

Location couldn't have been better. Easy to get to from the train station. Lots of restaurants in the vicinity and many of the attractions. Room was comfortable. Staff were helpful.

I didn't have breakfast as I thought it was a bit expensive.

Great place to put your luggage and explore the city.

The location is great, right on the main road, its very well connected with metro, shops near by, train station is close..so connectivity is superb. I also liked the decor, look and fell of the place.

Given the price, the infrastructure is quite basic - the quality of bed, pillows, duvet etc is basic. Also the hotel by themselves do not have a kitchen/cafe/restaurant for dinner services.

Perfect hotel for your wedding night!

We picked Hotel Alexandra due to its proximity to the Copenhagen City Hall where we got married. The room was beautiful, clean and had all the amenities that we needed for our big day (big mirror, hair dryer, iron and board, etc).
The staff was super welcoming and supportive!
The whole experience exceeded our expectations :)

Copenhagen in the snow for a few days was wonderful

Location close to the main railway station and too most of the attractions.
Property was clean and staff were superbly helpful.
Breakfast was to order from a reasonable menu.
Room was spacious and comfortable.

I don’t think I would change anything

I liked it!

Aesthetic!

Some light bulbs didn’t work in my room. Like for example table lamp on a desk wasn’t working which didn’t make sense.

Perfect hotel for a city break, very central, clean and beautiful. Just take earplugs!

Beautiful and niche hotel fully decorated in 1960/1970 original danish furniture. Staff were lovey and welcoming

The double room was very cosy, and the walls were quite thin meaning we heard when our neighbours fancied a bit of 6am TV on the Sunday morning!

Too pricey for an outdated hotel

The staff was friendly and helped us with switching rooms. Service oriented. Location is perfect.

For the amount of price you pay for this hotel, it definitely does not justify it. The rooms are outdated. It’s not even proper coffee at the rooms. We had to switch rooms two times as the room didn’t have enough light/lamp.

Charming hotel in good location

Stylish and furnished with attention to detail. Had an issue with the pipes in my bathroom and the reception staff was just super lovely and had maintenance deal with it right away.

Room was a bit small, but totally okay for one person with just carry-on. Bathroom was a bit dated.
