Widder Hotel, Zurich

We have stayed at this hotel before, but this time, our visit left us with mixed feelings. Let me give you an example. On the first day, I ordered Eggs Benedict and coffee for breakfast. I was served two toasts with eggs and a cup of coffee. Everything was excellent. My wife and I even remarked on how delicious the coffee was. The next day, we ordered the same thing, but this time… we were served one piece of toast with a single egg and coffee of terrible quality (it tasted like water with a hint of coffee). When I pointed out that there was only one egg instead of two, as served the previous day, the waiter replied that he could bring a second egg if I wanted. Breakfast at this hotel costs 40 francs per person. Is there really no standard for the dishes? For a hotel that positions itself as a 5-star establishment, I find this unacceptable!

Location Very Clean

The hotel is structured in a very complex layout. To reach my room with luggage, you need to navigate several minutes of stairs up and down twice before finally taking an elevator. Additionally, next to my room, there's a church that rings its bells loudly at 7 am on Sunday and Monday mornings, which disrupted my sleep after arriving at the hotel at 3 am from a friend's place. Lastly, I found the reception team to be unfriendly although they smile all the time.

A little hard to move around inside the building. Not what I expect from a 5-star. Not much to do inside the hotel either. Not a great view from the room.

no AC, heaters are very hot and cannot be closed, my room was next to the elevator i heard everything coming from outside my room. nevertheless i could not sleep from the noise & the heat

They said they would email the receipt but never did. A bit annoying for a 5 star hotel. I do not have time for such follow-ups.

The location is excellent.

That I didn’t get the suite with the terrace which I booked. I stayed at the Widder many times before. The location and that the suite has a terrace were the main reasons for always staying at the Widder when coming to Zurich.

We were excited to stay but once we arrived we were shown a room that appeared to be exactly what we expected. Unfortunately the room was mysteriously occupied and we went back to the lobby and we were sent to an old attic room which was shockingly less appointed than the rest of the hotel. It was musty and seemed like housing for non-guests as it was last renovated in the 1990’s.We were greatly disappointed. This was an unfortunate outcome with no consequences

The hotel bar, while it has a nice looking staff, some are without knowledge about products that they are offering.

the location and the vibe

The staff were incredible - attentive to our every need, courteous and proactive - even providing us with an amazing room upgrade and decorating the room for our wedding anniversary - we didn't even have to ask! Amazing. Also, the hotel is spot on in the center of the old city, easy walking to mostly everywhere, and an overall lovely neighborhood. The breakfast is awesome, with a great buffet and great choices overall. The bar is also very nice, with a great ambience, great selection and attentive service.

The room itself couldn't be cooled down properly, and we had this absurd situation in which the nights outside were pretty cold (around 10 degrees celsius), but it was too hot for us to sleep properly. We couldn't open the windows because the church bells sounds are pretty close, loud, and persistent :). We notified the staff about this but apparently there's nothing that can be done - it's something that has to do with a/c restrictions in the city. It might have even been exacerbated by the fact the room was so large. Anyway, bottom line is we didn't sleep that well because it was too hot in the room. Even so, it was a really small dent in what was a great weekend vacation.

The staff were incredibly helpful and went out of their way to ensure everything was to our satisfaction. We borrowed the electric bikes for free to ride around Zurich. The room was beautiful and had tasty chocolates. There are lots of spaces to sit in and entertain. The breakfast was very tasty.
