Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“A groovy makeover a few years back transformed this 1950s downtown motel into a knowingly cool sleepover with a tongue-in-cheek retro feel (neon exterior sign included). Colorful, mostly compact rooms have been spruced up with modern flourishes and contemporary amenities such as refrigerators and flat-screen TVs.”

Fodors review:

“If “funky retro chic” is your accommodations tyle of choice, you’ll definitely want to check out The Burrard. This modern hotel looks like a retro California beach hotel that made a smooth landing smack in the middle of Vancouver. From the palm trees in the courtyard to the glitzy furnishings and decor, the property feels like a throwback to kitschy, 50s Hollywood—in the best possible way.”

Frommers review:

“The Burrard Motor Inn first opened its doors in 1956 as the cool new kid on Vancouver’s block. Now, after a major reno, it’s that cool kid once again. Its location is a good one—right on busy Burrard Street, across the street from St. Paul’s Hospital and within a short stroll of English Bay.”

New York Times review:

“The Burrard is a revamped 1950s motel in the core of downtown, with plenty of retro-chic touches, from its neon sign to a palm-filled inner courtyard.”

What guests liked

All you need to know

Vancouver stands out as a distinctive city, diverging from the usual Canadian vibe due to its west coast location. This unique atmosphere permeates The Burrard hotel.

The interior design exudes warmth and appeals with its vivid colors, mirroring the West Coast’s ethos of welcoming everyone and spreading positivity. This feeling is palpable from the instant you step inside, evoking a simplistic yet distinct Californian ambiance.

The Burrard’s geographical advantage is also noteworthy. Nestled right in the heart of the city, it thrusts you into the midst of all the hustle and bustle.

While this urban lifestyle might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it certainly comes with its own set of benefits. These consist of convenient access to shopping, dining, and entertainment options that would be difficult to come by if you were accommodated outside the city center.

With a total of 72 rooms, The Burrard aligns with the popular medium-size trend among boutique hotels. If you’re seeking an ultra-exclusive, intimate experience, this might not be your top choice.

The hotel itself doesn’t boast an extensive list of amenities, but being in downtown Vancouver, every amenity is just a stone’s throw away.

There’s nicer areas of downtown but this area had the bars and restaurants that we like.

Location was good, close to ethnic restaurants and gay bars, the area is a bit seedy but not too bad. The hotel has free bikes to use, they were decent hybrid bikes. It’s a nice ride across the Burrand St bridge to Granville Island and also to the waterfront and Stanley Park. It’s also close to the higher end part of downtown and the ole historic areas. We stayed there before a cruise and the washer and dryer were nice to have.

The lobby seems a bit run down, there’s a coffee shop attached that may have been part of a nicer lobby in the past.

Great suggestion for staying in Vancouver Centre

The location of this hotel is great, and you'll probably find nothing better in that area for the money. Everything is clean. The parking is easy to find and enter and safe. Suggestion for breakfast (not available at the hotel): The Basic in Davie Street, a 5 min walk. The free bikes provided by the hotel are really OK and well-maintained, but not as comfortable as others from actual rental companies. So if you wanna bike a lot, consider renting.

The Burrard is an older motel that's renovated. Therefore the rooms are a bit noisy, the bathroom is very small and the A/C is loud. But please read the first sentence in the other half of the review again :)

Very good

Great central location and really friendly and helpful staff. Massive comfortable bed! Elysian cafe next door does very good coffee!

There’s no integrated AC - the portable unit in the room is very noisy! It would be great if the cafe did a range of breakfast options to avoid having to go out when you want a lazy start to the day!

Great spot! Cool vibe!

We ate dinner at Burgoo the first evening and tried Espana the next, and went to Forage for breakfast. Excellent location for walking, checking out Stanley Park, etc.

A/C was appreciated but loud. Takes up s bit of space in the room.

Reasonable value

We stayed two nights. Staff were friendly and helpful. Location is convenient to walking in Vancouver. Given the cost of accommodation in Vancouver, the Burrard is reasonable value.

The room was fairly compact - just OK for three people. It isn't located in a particularly nice area - right by a hospital.

It was good and bad

Excellent location, clean and comfortable. Friendly staff.

Noisy! They should supply ear plugs because between the loud exhaust, frequent sirens and the derelicts wandering the streets all night, I got about two hours of sleep.

We enjoyed our stay.

Bed was very comfortable, loved the Nespresso coffee pod machine in our room. The staff were helpful and friendly. Prior to us arriving provided lots of useful information of what to do in Vancouver. The location is convenient to downtown Vancouver and walkable to major attractions, Stanley Park , Granville Island, Canada place waterfront where tours can be arranged . Cafe Elysian next door and also the Burgoo Bistro. The meals there were delicious, reasonably priced and friendly staff.

Was a bit of siren noise due to the hospital across the road and the air conditioner was noisy but neither was bad enough not to spoil our stay.

Nice hotel and location, would have liked more space for the price.

Very friendly staff, good location. conveniently next to a coffee shop.

We had a portable air conditioner in the room that was pretty loud. The room was also small.
