Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“A groovy makeover a few years back transformed this 1950s downtown motel into a knowingly cool sleepover with a tongue-in-cheek retro feel (neon exterior sign included). Colorful, mostly compact rooms have been spruced up with modern flourishes and contemporary amenities such as refrigerators and flat-screen TVs.”

Fodors review:

“If “funky retro chic” is your accommodations tyle of choice, you’ll definitely want to check out The Burrard. This modern hotel looks like a retro California beach hotel that made a smooth landing smack in the middle of Vancouver. From the palm trees in the courtyard to the glitzy furnishings and decor, the property feels like a throwback to kitschy, 50s Hollywood—in the best possible way.”

Frommers review:

“The Burrard Motor Inn first opened its doors in 1956 as the cool new kid on Vancouver’s block. Now, after a major reno, it’s that cool kid once again. Its location is a good one—right on busy Burrard Street, across the street from St. Paul’s Hospital and within a short stroll of English Bay.”

New York Times review:

“The Burrard is a revamped 1950s motel in the core of downtown, with plenty of retro-chic touches, from its neon sign to a palm-filled inner courtyard.”

What guests liked

All you need to know

Vancouver stands out as a distinctive city, diverging from the usual Canadian vibe due to its west coast location. This unique atmosphere permeates The Burrard hotel.

The interior design exudes warmth and appeals with its vivid colors, mirroring the West Coast’s ethos of welcoming everyone and spreading positivity. This feeling is palpable from the instant you step inside, evoking a simplistic yet distinct Californian ambiance.

The Burrard’s geographical advantage is also noteworthy. Nestled right in the heart of the city, it thrusts you into the midst of all the hustle and bustle.

While this urban lifestyle might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it certainly comes with its own set of benefits. These consist of convenient access to shopping, dining, and entertainment options that would be difficult to come by if you were accommodated outside the city center.

With a total of 72 rooms, The Burrard aligns with the popular medium-size trend among boutique hotels. If you’re seeking an ultra-exclusive, intimate experience, this might not be your top choice.

The hotel itself doesn’t boast an extensive list of amenities, but being in downtown Vancouver, every amenity is just a stone’s throw away.

Super friendly staff, great location, and free bike rentals!

The staff were very friendly and the check-in and check-out process was smooth. The free bike rentals were a great perk and having a coffee shop attached to the hotel was pretty convenient, too. The location is great for exploring downtown and the West End.

The bed wasn't that comfortable as the mattress was very soft. There was also quite a bit of noise from the neighboring rooms (like doors slamming) especially during the cleaning period which seemed to last all day, strange for a relatively small hotel.

Small place located in the heart of downtown

Small place located in the heart of downtown. Friendly staff, nice coffee and tea makers in the room, beautiful garden in the courtyard. Nice selection of books to take or leave.

The parking garage was hard to find, the spaces were small and it was difficult to get our luggage down to it in the small elevator.

Pleasant

it was a surprise that this hotel located on Burrard street with all the fancy and costly hotels is old-timey motel. the rooms were old-school, but very clean. bed was relative comfortable. very good cafe next to the reception, where you can grab a breakfast. 15-20 min walk from waterfront and several bus stops nearby. neighborhood felt relatively safe.

the AC unit was extremely loud, waking me up several times per night. It won't be a problem outside the summer season but it wasn't very comfortable.

Nice hotel in a great location with very nice staff.

Excellent location,excellent service,nice staff.

The a.c was difficult to handle. Either it was too cold or you had to put only ventilation and then the room was hot.

Very good location, very friendly and helpful personnel. Doesn't really feel like a big city hotel, very nice and personal. Nice community area.

Could be cleaner (bathroom), a little bit aged.

Lovely hotel in great location

Clean, comfortable beds. Great location, free bikes to explore the city. Friendly, accommodating staff. Miami 50’s vibe with the roof garden

Noisy at night because of the alley and people who hang out there. Small bathrooms (but they have everything you need)

Satisfactory.

Room were clean & comfortable. Staff were pleasant & helpful. Always felt safe. I always stay @ the Burrard because of the downtown location. close proximity to pubic transportation & doable walking distance to places in downtown area & across both Burrard & Granville bridges.

Left the TV on @ night to block out odd noises (? from other room/pipes/parking area). No benefit to having garden view room. Would prefer that the norm is not to receive cleaning service unless patron requests it via door sign. Feel that would be more eco friendly. First time I stayed @ the Burrard & had a car. Realize parking availability is very limited. Feel there should be an assigned space @ the time of registration. Annoying to find no open space available due to manager parked in a spot. Perhaps the location of the e-bikes could be changed.

Very nice hotel conveniently located

The room was very nice and the bed comfortable. I liked the free water in the fridge and coffee maker and kettle. A very nice touch. The hotel is in walking distance to a sky train station and shopping downtown.

It was a bit noisy with the hospital right across the street and the music in the yard. But it didn't bother me a lot. Still had a great sleep.

Great, but get rid of your late night receptionist

Convenient location, good value for money (even though there was no breakfast sadly). Close to main sights and transport connections. Comfortable beds, and I really appreciated the great coffee that was available in the room.

The bathroom hadn't been cleaned thoroughly as there was hair in the drain when we arrived. The rest of the room was very clean though. I was very annoyed by the male receptionist on arrival. Given I had come off a 10 hour flight and had been travelling for about 20 hours total, his impatient and sarcastic attitude was not what you want when you're exhausted and want to just have a shower and sleep. The rest of the staff were lovely. It was interesting that when he was paired with other staff his rude behaviour seemed to magically disappear. It did not make for a positive start to our trip. Thankfully the rest of the stay went well which saved it.

Very good

The location is GrEaT. It is affordable compared to the other nearby options. The sheets and towels were clean and fresh, and the nespresso machine in the room was great.

The bed was uncomfortable (spring style bed with sag in the middle). The room was very small. We could stretch out, the bed took up most of the room.

A very pleasant place to explore from and relax at.

The Free bicycles were a brilliant touch. The Splash of tropical Greenery was lovely. The outdoor seating area was most pleasant.

Very good

The Burrard is close to a wonderful mix of restaurants, parks, Granville Island and the cruise docks. It was very convenient for our family. The rooms were older but comfortable.

There are a number of homeless people within a block of the hotel and discarded needles. I know this is an issue in any big city. We were accosted after dinner by one wanting money for booze/drugs.

Great journey at Burrard Hotel

Great location. Quiet. Nice neighborhood, good restos around. Walking distant of many touristic sites. Excellent front-desk & cleaning services. Rooms are small, basic but clean. Free-bikes services which we used 2 days during our week.

Very good

Handy for buses and trains. Bed comfortable

Very noisy being on a busy road and across from a hospital emergency department. Expensive compared to other major cities throughout Europe::, UK and Australia but one of the cheaper places I found in Vancouver. Canada is an expensive place. Probably a good place for younger people such as backpackers.

Comfortable retro-styled motel-type hotel, plenty of nearby shops and restuarants a short walk away.

Fair sized room, with chairs and desk area. Coffee machine. Powerful shower. Comfortable bed. Walking distance (10-25mins) to many attractions in the city centre. Small second floor garden courtyard.

Room facing the road gets the sun, but also gets more noise. Still managed a good nights sleep.

There’s nicer areas of downtown but this area had the bars and restaurants that we like.

Location was good, close to ethnic restaurants and gay bars, the area is a bit seedy but not too bad. The hotel has free bikes to use, they were decent hybrid bikes. It’s a nice ride across the Burrand St bridge to Granville Island and also to the waterfront and Stanley Park. It’s also close to the higher end part of downtown and the ole historic areas. We stayed there before a cruise and the washer and dryer were nice to have.

The lobby seems a bit run down, there’s a coffee shop attached that may have been part of a nicer lobby in the past.

Great suggestion for staying in Vancouver Centre

The location of this hotel is great, and you'll probably find nothing better in that area for the money. Everything is clean. The parking is easy to find and enter and safe. Suggestion for breakfast (not available at the hotel): The Basic in Davie Street, a 5 min walk. The free bikes provided by the hotel are really OK and well-maintained, but not as comfortable as others from actual rental companies. So if you wanna bike a lot, consider renting.

The Burrard is an older motel that's renovated. Therefore the rooms are a bit noisy, the bathroom is very small and the A/C is loud. But please read the first sentence in the other half of the review again :)

Very good

Great central location and really friendly and helpful staff. Massive comfortable bed! Elysian cafe next door does very good coffee!

There’s no integrated AC - the portable unit in the room is very noisy! It would be great if the cafe did a range of breakfast options to avoid having to go out when you want a lazy start to the day!

Great spot! Cool vibe!

We ate dinner at Burgoo the first evening and tried Espana the next, and went to Forage for breakfast. Excellent location for walking, checking out Stanley Park, etc.

Reasonable value

We stayed two nights. Staff were friendly and helpful. Location is convenient to walking in Vancouver. Given the cost of accommodation in Vancouver, the Burrard is reasonable value.

The room was fairly compact - just OK for three people. It isn't located in a particularly nice area - right by a hospital.

Excellent location, clean and comfortable. Friendly staff.

Noisy! They should supply ear plugs because between the loud exhaust, frequent sirens and the derelicts wandering the streets all night, I got about two hours of sleep.

We enjoyed our stay.

Bed was very comfortable, loved the Nespresso coffee pod machine in our room. The staff were helpful and friendly. Prior to us arriving provided lots of useful information of what to do in Vancouver. The location is convenient to downtown Vancouver and walkable to major attractions, Stanley Park , Granville Island, Canada place waterfront where tours can be arranged . Cafe Elysian next door and also the Burgoo Bistro. The meals there were delicious, reasonably priced and friendly staff.

Was a bit of siren noise due to the hospital across the road and the air conditioner was noisy but neither was bad enough not to spoil our stay.
