The Listel Hotel, Vancouver

1300 Robson St, Vancouver, BC V6E 1C5, Canada (show on map)

The Listel Hotel in Vancouver was long celebrated as the city’s most “art-full” destination. Opening in 1992 on Robson Street, the boutique property became a local landmark by dedicating its floors to specific artistic themes. It featured “Gallery Floors” filled with original works by international and regional artists, and “Museum Floors” curated in partnership with the University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology, which showcased stunning First Nations art and cedar-carved furnishings.

Beyond its focus on art, the hotel was a pioneer in sustainability, championing zero-waste practices and environmental mindfulness long before it became a standard industry practice. Its on-site restaurant, Forage, was equally famous for its commitment to local sourcing, serving regional Canadian cuisine that highlighted seasonal ingredients and sustainable seafood.

While the original six-story building held a special place in the hearts of many travelers and locals, it closed its doors in late 2024. The site is currently undergoing a massive transformation; a new 28-story mixed-use tower is under construction, which will eventually house a new hotel operated by the Listel group under Hyatt’s “Unbound Collection” brand.

When it was active, its location in the West End made it an unbeatable home base. Guests were just a short walk from the lush trails of Stanley Park, the vibrant shopping scene of Robson Street, and the scenic waterfront seawall. While the original chapter of The Listel has concluded, it remains a beloved memory for those who appreciated its unique blend of cultural immersion and eco-conscious hospitality.

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“On a pretty stretch of Robson Street, the Listel Hotel is an eco-friendly boutique hotel with contemporary and Northwest Coast art and furnishings throughout the property’s public spaces, guest rooms and suites. There are two restaurants: Forage, a farm-to-table restaurant, and Timber, a Canadian gastropub.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Vancouver, Canada.

Telegraph review:

“Ever wanted to stay in an art gallery? Now’s your chance. The Listel’s walls and public spaces shine with original modern and indigenous artworks. A stylish eco-minded stay with a West Coast welcome; taste Canada coast-to-coast at the superb Forage restaurant, and fun Timber gastro-pub.”

Look forward to the redevoped hotel in the future

It was a great hotel in it’s day

It was very tired which given its closing soon to get redeveloped is not surprising.
It should have been cheaper to reflect the overall condition of the hotel

Luxury hotel with lovely extras

Beautiful hotel with an art theme, decor is stunning and luxurious. Staff were very helpful. We arrived just in time for the free wine tasting in the reception which was a lovely bonus. Rooms are modern and well appointed. Really liked the option to order complimentary filter coffee and real milk to be delivered to the room in the morning.

Fantastic staff and great location.

Staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. They let us check in early, kept our suitcases for us all day after check out as we had a night flight.

Every morning they bring fresh coffee/tea to your room. And everyday there is a complimentary wine tasting.

Room is slightly dated but very comfortable none the less. I believe the hotel is being refurbished later this year.

Location is great next to lots of good Asian restaurants and close to Stanley park. Didn’t have to walk more than 15-20mins to get anywhere we wanted.

We had an enjoyable stay at the Listel Hotel in Vancouver.

Great location! Walking distance to many attractions. Lovely property with museum quality art throughout. The staff was friendly and helpful and our room was very comfortable.

Restaurant had limited hours and menu. No vending machines and no way to get any drinks or snacks when it’s raining and you don’t want to leave the hotel.

Wonderful staff, delicious food, great french press coffee, and a window seat for reading in my room

Restaurant meals were of high quality and some unusual items. When they were out of a special mushroom sauce for one dish they offered to adjust another one and substitute mushrooms. Very accommodating. There was no room service but they packaged up dinner to go for me.

Charming hotel in convenient location.

The hotel is beautiful with original artwork everywhere. The location is very convenient to Stanley Park and the sea walk-in both directions. The customer service is exceptional — if you book one of their “gallery” rooms, they bring hot French press coffee to your room each morning at no charge. We chose this hotel because of the 3 hours daily free e-bike useage, and that was fabulous.

The view from our room was not great. Looked out over a parking lot and nearby apartment buildings.
Also, the e-bike checkout policy could be smoother. There are only 6 bikes and unless you book them in advance to use by 9 am or earlier, they have to be charged before they can go out again. The person at the desk couldn’t give an estimate of how long that might take and told us we needed to remain at the hotel while they were charging or risk losing them to another guest. She said she could not call us on our cell phone if we left to go get a pastry at a nearby breakfast place. It seems to me that you should be able to put your name on a waiting list with the understanding that your 3 hours begins as soon as the bikes are available.

This is a wonderful hotel and good value for money.

This is a fantastic hotel. It is very central to the downtown area and free shuttle buses to the Capilano bridge, good restaurants and Canada Place.
The bed and pillows are heavenly. It was a very spacious room with a good shower and spotlessly clean. One of the things I loved most was it has filtered and sparkling water free on every floor of the hotel. We stayed for three nights and cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. It also had a 12 midday checkout time. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

I was not a fan of the shower over the bath with a shower curtain, but it was a minor detail.

Wonderful Stay at Listel Hotel, Super Friendly Staff

Super friendly, helpful staff. Very comfy beds, excellent location (right in downtown, walking distance to Coal Harbour), free French press coffee delivered each morning, free e-bikes for three hours which we used to bike around the Stanley Park seawall and waterfront area (was one of the highlights of our whole trip). They also have free wine between 5-6pm but we didn't get to try as were too busy doing other things!

If you are bringing a car, overnight (valet) parking here is expensive and it is difficult to find other options.
Minor item - The toilet and shower room was quite small (only just fits one person).

Great stay, very accommodating staff

Clean room, comfortable beds, great location

The light over the sink did not work. Consequently, it was very dark. We could have used a microwave in the sink/fridge area.

Comfy beds/ location is amazing

Beds are very comfy and big enough.
All staffs are very kind and helpful.
(They also have Japanese speakers)
Location is just perfect to go to the main spots like 15 to 20mins away from the hotel by walk.

If you have big and a lot of luggage, you might feel far away from the nearest station to the hotel. Calling Uber is also an option. However, it was no problem at all with one suitcase!
