Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto

188 University Ave, Toronto, ON M5H 0A3, Canada (show on map)

The Shangri-La Toronto is a striking 65-story skyscraper that has defined the city skyline since opening in 2012. Designed by architect James K.M. Cheng, the building’s construction involved a fascinating archaeological journey; the site once housed the historic “Bishop’s Block,” and developers spent months excavating the land, uncovering numerous artifacts from Toronto’s early history before building one of the deepest foundations in Canada.

The hotel seamlessly blends modern luxury with traditional Asian elegance. A standout feature is the 40-ton “Rising” sculpture by Chinese artist Zhang Huan at the entrance, which symbolizes the integration of nature and city life—a theme echoed by the metal birds decorating the lobby ceiling. Inside, you’ll find a serene environment filled with natural stone and wood, plus a unique, high-tech touch: every room comes with an iPad to easily manage dining and amenities.

For those looking to unwind, the hotel’s wellness offerings are second to none. The Miraj Hammam Spa provides an authentic Middle Eastern steam experience, and there is even an urban beehive on the third-floor terrace that produces local honey used in the hotel’s culinary creations.

Its location between the Financial and Entertainment districts puts you in the thick of the action. You are within walking distance of the iconic CN Tower, the Frank Gehry-redesigned Art Gallery of Ontario, and the vibrant shops of the Eaton Centre. Whether you’re catching a show or exploring the nearby historic districts, it is a perfectly placed urban sanctuary.

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“Cost will keep most away, but for those looking for a splurge (or exercising a corporate account), the Shangri-La Toronto offers the standard high level of service and comfort the chain has become known for.”

Fodors review:

“Shangri-La puts an arty twist on its traditional East-meets-West aesthetic. Witness the stunning Chinese sculpture of a flock of birds taking flight just outside the entrance. Inside, you’ll find natural wooden screens, delicate accents, and large-scale ink paintings.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Toronto.

Forbes review:

“Shangri-La Toronto stands out for its blend of modern luxury with traditional Chinese décor. Throughout the space, the aesthetic relies on natural elements, with plenty of wood and natural stone accents (the 40-ton metal tree statue just outside the hotel symbolizes the integration of nature and city life).”

Telegraph review:

“Brimming with an elegant, international flavour, the warm and welcoming Shangri-La embodies total luxury. Its renowned lobby, luring both locals and travellers, is really an urban living room in the heart of the city, featuring live music every day of the week.”

Gutted as it was Underwhelming

The location is great. The bed was comfy and the shower was nice. The tea was lovely.

The welcome was a little flat/ cold. The customer service was a little poor. Was just an underwhelming experience, which is a shame I was looking forward to it. There is better experiences in toronto for the same rate. The decor looks tired. The lobby design is tired and cluttered.

Shagra -LA oh la la

Staff attentiveness and amenities are spectacular. Bosk is upscale adult drinks and dining.

They could use less attractive staff to avoid temptation. Everyone is perfectly professional, so don't take that wrong. They just know what they are doing.

Beautiful hotel, gracious hospitality

Breakfast was a La carte and offered many wonderful choices. The omelettes and hash browns were perfection. The dinner menu offered less choices but the food was still very good. It is the staff at this hotel that makes a stay so pleasant. From check in to check out, we could not have been treated more graciously.

I did not care for having to be seated by a hostess in the lobby area. There are plentiful couches, large chairs and low table groupings but only a hostess can seat you during most of the day and night even if there’s open seats that don’t have “reserved signs”. The hotel serves a nice tea there in the afternoon and those tables have reserved signs on them. This is not a big deal but after my decades of travel I’ve never seen a hotel that doesn’t allow its guests to sit freely in the main lobby.

Not worth it

The hotel scheduled maintenance that shut off all power from midnight until 6am which meant we had to pack, shower and dress by light of the emergency flashlight. There was no notification of this in advance other than a discreet note left on the desk of our room at turndown service, mere hours before said power outage. Service at the restaurant was incredibly slow and the food was poor. They offered fresh squeezed juice and poured tropicana into glasses. There was a lot of dust in the room. Everything was just “ok” and mediocre. Not worth what we paid.

Spa weekend, see you again!

The staff were the most professional & warm/friendliest people- round-the-clock. Everything from our check-in, to turn-down, to when I lost my watch (they found it), late night Uber delivery, breakfast service... it was a great stay

I wish there was lighting & some type of awning for rain on the terrace in our room. That would have really stepped our room to another level! But that said, still an excellent room!
