Le Germain Hotel Mercer, Toronto

30 Mercer Street, M5V 1H3 Toronto, Canada (show on map)

Le Germain Hotel Toronto Mercer is a sophisticated boutique retreat nestled in the heart of Toronto’s vibrant Entertainment District. Since opening in 2003, it has stood as a flagship for the Quebec-based family-owned Germain Hotels group. It quickly gained international acclaim, notably being named one of the world’s “hottest” new hotels by Condé Nast Traveller shortly after its debut.

The hotel’s design is defined by a “soft, restrained elegance,” featuring an airy, two-level lobby and modern interiors that balance masculine dark wood accents with cozy, residential comforts. A standout feature is the inviting library located just off the lobby, which serves as a quiet refuge from the city’s hustle. Guests often appreciate the thoughtful touches, such as goose-down duvets and locally curated modern art in every room.

Beyond its stylish rooms, the property includes a rooftop terrace that offers intimate, near-direct views of the CN Tower. The hotel is also committed to a culture of hospitality that feels more like visiting a friend’s home than staying in a large, anonymous chain, a philosophy established by founders Christiane and Jean-Yves Germain.

Its location on Mercer Street is incredibly convenient for culture seekers. You are just a short walk from major landmarks like the Princess of Wales Theatre, the TIFF Lightbox, and the iconic Rogers Centre. Whether you are in town for a film festival premiere, a concert, or to explore the nearby waterfront, the hotel provides a serene, chic base perfectly situated for Toronto’s best urban experiences.

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“Le Germain Hotel Toronto on Mercer Street, is one of two Toronto locations of this Canadian boutique hotelier. Located in the downtown entertainment district, across from the Second City comedy theater, it offers a centralized home base for exploring.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Toronto, Canada.

Fodors review:

“Conveniently located near the TIFF Lightbox, site of the Toronto International Film Festival, this hotel is swanky and personal enough for Hollywood starlets, tech moguls, and music industry big shots. It blends seamlessly with the historic architecture of the surrounding theater district.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Toronto.

Frommers review:

“Hallways are wide, and warm wood paneling is repeated in the rooms, along with plush robes, Bose stereo, and beds with goose-down duvets and Egyptian cotton linens. Bathrooms feature Molton Brown products, waterfall showers, huge deep bathtubs, and a memorable revealing glass panel to the bedroom area.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Toronto.

Telegraph review:

“Built in 2002 in what used to be a hat factory, this stylish boutique property run by the Quebec-based, family-run Le Germain chain of hotels is a cosy retreat catering to everyone from creative business travellers to weekend sporting-event ‘staycationers’.”

Overpriced for the quality of the room.

The room was not what I expected for the price. Very dusty, some bugs and the bed was uncomfortable.

Disappointing at best

aesthetically the hotel is lovely, the rooms are clean and new and what I have come to expect from Le Germaine hotels, as I tend to book exclusively with this brand.

technically, I had issues starting with non-operational blackout blinds. It seems room 810 is the only one in the hotel that they forgot to put a switch in. Wi-Fi was spotty at best, the major issue was with the thermostat, for some reason it required constant resetting and in between those times the temperature in the room which soar beyond 30 Celsius. I ended up having to “sleep with the window open” which in downtown Toronto meant I was woken up every five minutes with the sound of honking horns, people or recycling trucks. The blinds broke, so privacy was limited and to top it off. The TV was non-operational. When I go to a hotel, the last thing I want is interaction with hotel staff and Maintenance entering thecroom ,and the fact that each night that I stayed there was an issue and requirement to enter the room. It just completely negated my weekend getaway. I’m very disappointed.

Best hotel staff I have experienced hands down. Always helpful.

Beautiful room

On check in a $15 breakfast was mentioned. The next morning we went to the restaurant but the server didn’t know anything about it. We needed up leaving as so didn’t want to spend $21 on avocado toast.

Reliable comfortable stay

Our go to hotel for stays in downtown Toronto. Spacious clean and quiet rooms with comfortable beds.

It would be nice to have more control of air conditioning and fans in the unit. They seem to have centralized control.
We have stayed at this hotel about 5 times, even as the Thompson hotel that it used to be. Being recognized for return visits would be appreciated.

A very pleasant 2 days in downtown Toronto.

Location was great for what we wanted to do. The only criticism we have is that the bar closed too early on a Saturday night.

See above.

Trendy central business hotel in Toronto

Centrally located, quiet and clean. Shower excellent. Nespresso in room a nice touch.

Wifi was terrible. HVAC hit and miss. Lack of water in rooms is annoying

Nice but expensive for what you get.

The front desk staff were very friendly.

The venetian blind in the window wouldn’t close so we couldn’t get a good sleep. Curtain or blockout blind would be better.
One teabag (for black tea). Feels very stingy. Surely for the price we could get two teabags, one each?
Outside of the property is very dingy and the view is just onto other buildings.

Great. Thanks for upgraded room. Loved it

The construction was unexpected. Streets wet/muddy and uneven near the hotel do to construction in the area

Nothing that your hotel had control over. Realize the construction is city construction not hotel construction

Very cool, trendy, quiet and tidy place to stay, almost like at home

The rooms are plain yet stylish also offering a lot of space. I really enjoyed coming back there after a day's work. Also there are no waiting queues for check in or out, the personnel is professionnal and welcoming. The bar looks great (have not tested it). Breakfast was really nicely served and the restaurant is quiet. Location is the best right in the middle but in a small street so no noise. I highly recommend !

I wouldn’t stay again because I wouldn’t trust what is photographed and written on bookings is what I would get upon arr

Clean and the location

Checking in the room initially was not as photo’s on booking. And when checking in we were being told the room doesn’t include breakfast even tho bookings said it did. The front desk gave it to us but made it seem like they were doing us a favour even tho bookings clearly stated breakfast included. We also asked that bedding for the couch be sent to our room - twice - and it never got sent. Very unresponsive front desk experience.

Overall my mom enjoyed our stay at the le Germaine

Antonio at the door was incredibly warm and helpful, he deserves a bonus. He walked my mother and I to our breakfast location.

The feather pillows were very uncomfortable to sleep on

Okay. Well-equipped room. Needs better air circulation.

Comfortable room and pleasant staff

1) Airless. No way to control temperature or air flow, making it hard to sleep, and leaving us both with stuffy headaches by morning.
2) Host kindly offered to bring us nondairy milk for our coffee, but didn’t follow through. We left as soon as we could in the morning to get coffee and fresh air.

It’s always a pleasure staying at the Mercer location.

The staff is always so welcoming and friendly and go out of their way to make sure you have the best stay. I was concerned with the construction near my room and they offered me a choice of different options and then checked in to make sure it was still nice and quiet for me to work.

the staff was friendly and helpful and the room was clean

did not eat breakfast on site

The soap and shampoo was over whelmingly scented. Both my wife and I ended up with terrible headaches, and my wife was ill all day until she was able to shower when we arrived home. Cartering to so many people we strongly suggest having scent free options available.

Perfection - from start to finish!

Love Le G! Feels like home and their high standards remain ever present 15 years+ since opening.

It was perfect. Loved seeing the evolution of the property after not having been here for 10+ years. Sad to see breakfast room gone but understandable given pandemic fallout and health & safety concerns.

Be careful doing the reservation at this hotel! The price changes during check out!

Recommendation

I’ve made a reservation through booking.com with a certain rate and during check out the amount charged was different! I just realized that they ‘changed’ at the app the day after my departure since I’ve complained to customer service.

overall we were satisfied with our stay.

Room was clean and a good large size with plenty of room for luggage.
The staff were friendly and helpful.

The location was surrounded by construction work.
The entrance was small and not on a main street.
Access to the hotel entrance was not in a convenient spot.

Nice hotel with superb staff and an excellent location.

The staff was super nice. We were able to check in early and out late and they accommodated us.
Location is great - lots of restaurants, convenience stores, etc. nearby.
The shower is top tier and the bed pretty comfy.

A little pricey and some of the furnishings in the room are dated.

Loved staying at this hotel.

Fabulous location, rooms and staff.
