Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“The 37-room Gladstone Hotel is as much art destination as sleeping quarters: the first two floors are filled with exhibitions, and each room was designed by an artist. The Sunday bluegrass brunch is packed with children.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Toronto, Canada.

Lonely Planet review:

“The 37 artist-designed rooms at this trendsetting hotel could have leaped straight from a Taschen design book. Pick a room theme from the informative website, then when you arrive, take the hand-cranked birdcage elevator to your arty boudoir on the 3rd or 4th floor.”

Fodors review:

“If Andy Warhol and Lady Gaga dreamed up a hotel together, this would be it! The Gladstone has 37 artist-designed rooms–all of them quirky and fun–above the hotel’s busy art galleries and community event spaces.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Toronto.

Frommers review:

“The Gladstone, which is the longest continually operating hotel in Toronto (opened in 1889), is known today as Toronto’s art hotel. Christina Zeidler took over with her family in 2005, and now along with brick walls, wood floors, and high ceilings, it features galleries and 37 unique rooms designed by Canadian artists.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Toronto.

Telegraph review:

“Toronto’s oldest hotel today combines a boutique art hotel with a gallery, and it continues to be one of the biggest supporters of the Toronto art community in myriad ways. The biggest draw is the fact that each of the 37 rooms is designed by a different local artist.”

A unique, comfortable place to say.

This is a very cool hotel, and the room was great, not big, but well planned out. It was a reasonable size, not tiny and cramped like you find in a lot of big city retrofit hotels. The bed was amazingly comfortable with fantastic linens and pillows. The supplied amenities are great quality. The hotel overall is very interesting, hung with a rotating art collection and small lounges on each floor, for billiards, or reading. My floor had a full coffee station.

Nothing serious. The hotel has maintained the ancient, hand-controlled elevator, which is charming AF, but means if the operator is busy dealing with other guests, you can wait a long time for them to come and get you. Really, it’s only an issue when you’re moving luggage, or find 4 flights of stairs difficult.

Old style hotel with loads of history and a great vibe.

The vibe and decor are very cool.

5km from the downtown core. Not crazy distance, but you aren’t walking to downtown.

Excellently designed interior and a fun stay.

Great old building, Close to Queen St cafes, bars, easy streetcar use. Nice interior design.

Noisy room doors - like every hotel - slamming doors at all hours is not a consideration. Breakfast not included.

Memorable stay in Toronto at a lovely Victorian hotel with beautiful architecture

The location on the W Queen Street where’s a popular and trendy location, very close to Ossington strip. Very clean, beautiful heritage hotel and the King Loft room where I stayed was amazing with big windows. The staffs are truly amazing and super friendly.

Nothing. There’s a construction by the intersection of the hotel so it can get noisy during the day but that’s unrelated to the hotel. No bath in the room but very nice shower. The design is a bit inefficient as the water splash around the bathroom.

Gladstone House was exemplary in every way. Can’t wait to go back.

Everything about the hotel was perfect. The staff were excellent and very attentive. The accommodations were great. The fitness rooms were outstanding, lockers, showers. Everything was immaculate. Great location, street cars take you everywhere. Looking forward to coming back soon.

Everything was perfect. There was nothing not to like about Gladstone house.

Beautiful design forward, art-filled boutique hotel in a great location.

Very nice design and quality common areas on each floor before as you arrive off the staircase or elevator. Rooms-wise, overall is very nicely refreshed and well designed. Nice artwork throughout, the bed is very comfortable, quality sheets and the TV/Blinds etc. are all well executed. Great location. Good value.

The overall room-size is a touch small, but very manageable. The elevator isn't very useful as its ancient (although beautiful to look at) you'll usually take the stairs. The lobby area is a bit dark/stark and not very welcoming.

Perfection

The property is on a street with several shops, bars and restaurants nearby. The room is comfortable with plenty of light. The bathroom is clean and the water has excellent pressure. An interesting curiosity about the place is that it has those old crank elevators that give the hotel a whole charm.

Very good

Very well-designed room, everything very well-thought of. Good lighting, comfortable bed, lots of room to sit around. One of the best and practical hotel rooms design that we have encountered.

The elevator can only be operated by staff, so you have to call them every time you want to go up or down (luckily we were on the 2nd floor so took the stairs). Room was noisy: Street noise and ambulances at night, and noise from inside the hotel early in the morning (they have work areas for guests on the floors, which is a nice idea, but we woke up to a conference call outside our room early in the early morning). The aircondition in the room was also loud. We asked to extend our stay by one hour and check out at 13 instead of 12. It seemed they had vacancies, and still would ask 30 dollars for that. We found that somewhat petty.

It was awesome! Again the staff is amazing and their restaurant is amazing food!

This was a beautiful hotel! Very well located being that we were heading to the Budweiser stage for a concert. The room was spotless and beautifully designed! The staff was amazing!

Although it was located in an up and coming neighborhood, the lack of parking is concerning, however the hotel does offer underground parking in the metro grocery store, you need to call beforehand and get instructions.

Quite adequate. Would stay again

The room was small but adequate. Hotel was fairly easy to locate although the parking in bad weather sucks.

Distance of parking garage from the hotel. Lots of hallway noise.

This is an ideal place if you want to enjoy all that the Queen West neighborhood has to offer.

The staff is friendly and helpful. The hotel is located on a busy corner on Queen West and they went out of their way to help us get our luggage to our room and get us settled in. We loved the historic, manually operated elevator staffed by the hotel personell. We also liked how each room featured the artwork of a Toronto artist. The rooms are modern, clean and sophisticated. We also loved the Nespresso machine available to all guests on the fourth floor.

The street noise in the morning was a little loud, however, it did not overshadow our excellent experience. It would not prevent us from returning. I did find the hotel to be a little expensive.
