Gladstone Hotel, Toronto

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“The 37-room Gladstone Hotel is as much art destination as sleeping quarters: the first two floors are filled with exhibitions, and each room was designed by an artist. The Sunday bluegrass brunch is packed with children.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Toronto, Canada.

Lonely Planet review:

“The 37 artist-designed rooms at this trendsetting hotel could have leaped straight from a Taschen design book. Pick a room theme from the informative website, then when you arrive, take the hand-cranked birdcage elevator to your arty boudoir on the 3rd or 4th floor.”

Fodors review:

“If Andy Warhol and Lady Gaga dreamed up a hotel together, this would be it! The Gladstone has 37 artist-designed rooms–all of them quirky and fun–above the hotel’s busy art galleries and community event spaces.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Toronto.

Frommers review:

“The Gladstone, which is the longest continually operating hotel in Toronto (opened in 1889), is known today as Toronto’s art hotel. Christina Zeidler took over with her family in 2005, and now along with brick walls, wood floors, and high ceilings, it features galleries and 37 unique rooms designed by Canadian artists.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Toronto.

Telegraph review:

“Toronto’s oldest hotel today combines a boutique art hotel with a gallery, and it continues to be one of the biggest supporters of the Toronto art community in myriad ways. The biggest draw is the fact that each of the 37 rooms is designed by a different local artist.”

Great stay in a beautiful hotel.

Our stay was great. Staff was very friendly. Location is perfect, in walking distance to Ossington Ave and Little Italy. Hotel itself is beautiful.

Rooms are a bit small, but this is mentioned on the website so it was expected.

Stellar service, historic charm, and a great location for exploring and going to events.

Very clean, easy check in and room access, very friendly service from all staff. Clean and nice looking room with a great vanity. Great location with streetcars right out front.

Noisy - window's don't muffle sound from the street outside but understandable since it's an old building. Small room for the cost and bed felt a little small.

Very good

The building is beautiful!! Room fantastic! Little noisey outside, but thats because its a very active and fun street. We went walking around after our concert and felt safe, had some late night pizza in a park. The staff set this place apart, they are so friendly and happy to help, we felt really welcomed and care for.

Toilet needs to be repaired, ran all night, difficult to flush.

Great place to stay and see a different end of Tdot

Loved the vibe, great location and the rooms were comfortable. Very easy to find and lots to do in the area.

Not much negative to say to be honest. Odd the sinks were inside the actual room instead of the bathroom and it would be nice to have a mini fridge to keep drinks cool or store some food or leftovers.

Lots of street noise, yelling and music. Maybe it would have been quieter if our room wasn’t facing Queen Street.

Overall, fantastic stay!

Hotel is beautiful, has a particular style and vibe! Great service, nice restaurant, comfy rooms, convenient location. What more can one ask:)

Windows were dirty in my room, one towel was missing for a couple of days, and there was not a lot of space around the bed:)

Nice stay.

The scent in the room was too strong. We were warned it would be on the common areas, but it was also in our room. We were asked via email to give details about our visit . I mentioned celebrating my husband's Birthday and that our daughter had been married there . No other contact after that. Felt a bit impersonal.

Very cool hotel in an old building. Wish we had stayed longer.

The windows and window benches in the corner room. Lounge areas on each floor were nice, wish we would have been there long enough to enjoy them. Was worried about noise from street and trains, but wasn't a problem.

Blinds in the big windows were fun to play with, but didn't block the light very well. It's pretty far from downtown attractions, which might make us avoid it in the future. On this trip, it was close to an event we were attending, so it was perfect. Great street with restaurants and walkable to Dundas St W and Harbourfront.

Very good

Excellent location. Really a stone's throw away from so many cool places. The hotel itself is also really cool - it's a historic building with the only functioning manual elevator in Toronto. This is a double-edged sword though; this means that the elevator always needs an operator to be used, and they need to be called if they're not around. For facilities, it was pretty standard. The comforter was VERY warm, we actually had to lower the thermostat because we were too warm. The smart TV had an option for YouTube that didn't work, but Netflix seemed to work. Apparently this is common, and they offered to move us to another room, but that day they had to had a full house so they offered us a free late check-out instead. A very nice gesture from caring staff. The restaurant on the ground floor is also quite good.

Loved the place! Looks cool, good location, comfortable stay :D

Great design with a wonderful artistic taste, and a beautiful duality of modern and victorian! Comfy bed and linens. Nice dimable mood lighting in the room. Different activies in common rooms on each floor (2nd - spot to eat with balcony, 3rd - pool table, 4rd - library, chess, and coffee). And good coffee too (although it is out in the common area, robe slippers are provided, so all good!). Would stay again!

Our only complaint is we wish there was a mini-fridge in the room. The staff was nice in saying would could use the common area mini-fridge, where the coffee cream is kept. It did the trick, but we felt a little uncomfortable to store it in a public place where someone may swipe it or cleaning staff may toss it unknowingly. Neither happened, and our food was fine, but it just caused us a bit of awkward worry. A microwave would also be great in the 2nd floor common room.

A little gem in western Toronto

Beautiful heritage building with an awesome old-fashioned elevator. Great common spaces, including free coffee all day. High quality food served in on-site restaurant

Higher pet fees than advertised. A per pet per day fee is just not acceptable, when there is only a one time fixed cost for extra cleaning. Rooms are a bit small for comfort on a multi-night stay.

Charming

The location, very close to amenities and the old vibe look of the hotel was amazing, they also have a pool table and the elevator it gives the vibe of a museum, the food was great too and the staff.

Although not a big deal the parking is offsite, and we got a ticket, but the hotel took care of it right away, I would said they went above and beyond.

The hotel was absolutely gorgeous, really great vibe, also the breakfast was phenomenal I’m gonna be dreaming about it for months to come!

My only criticism would be not having a mini fridge in the room. No biggie though, overall I love this place and will be back

Gorgeous, Vibrant, and Good Vibes.

For me never having been to Toronto in fact in Canada in general and not really knowing where to stay, the Gladstone House was THE perfect place to experience the city for the first time. When I say the interior is absolutely GORGEOUS. So good for any picture moment and being surrounded by a beautiful and vibrant atmosphere. From the curated artwork that gets changed every few months to the steampunk style century old elevator — all the way to the rooms and accommodations with the gold features and pops of color it’s absolutely breathtaking! It’s literally in walking vicinity or even a five to 10 minute drive to any popular spot ranging from restaurants, music videos, jazz bars, shops, and more. Literally the perfect place to stay. It was my first solo trip internationally as well as my birthday and the staff made sure I had such a special time during my stay. They gifted me a handwritten note and a bottle of wine. They also checked in on me daily, providing recommendations for places to go. Overall they were so friendly! I’ve never experienced such amazing service like this before. I do plan to come back to Toronto again and I do plan staying at the Gladstone House. I couldn’t picture saying anywhere else and I’ve already raved about this beautiful boutique hotel to all my friends.

The shower didn’t have a door. It was an open concept. I don’t know if it’s like that for all rooms. I stayed in a queen studio

Great staff, all very helpful and kind. Nice bar. The old fashioned elevator was cool.

Waking up in my underpants on a different floor of the hotel and then having to get the night Porter to let me back into my room but that is on me, I never sleep walked before in my entire life! 😁

Fabulous

Very good location, a real neighbourhood, with good restaurants close by. The room is comfortable. The book selection on the bookshelves is excellent. The best thing: the elevator. Very nice old building, cool common areas.

The bathroom drain. The fact that the bathroom door is very noisy and without a real handle; if somebody uses during the night, the other person will be woken up. I would much prefer the sink with the toilet, but I'm afraid there is nothing that can be changed at this point.

Nice stay but at times unresponsive staff.

Old and historical building, renovated. Good location when it comes to restaurants, a bit far from the center (CN tower, harbourfront). Nice room, nice gym.

The staff wasn’t always responsive, especially via Booking or email in the weeks leading up to our stay. I had a couple of messages/emails ignored and unanswered.

Cool hotel in cool neighbourhood.

The neighbourhood is lively and interesting. The hotel is beautiful and well decorated. The room is small, with no closet; it's meant for short stays.

The water in the shower doesn't quite flow towards the drain. Neither closet nor room to put things on.
