Gladstone House, Toronto

1214 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1J6, Canada (show on map)

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“The 37-room Gladstone is as much art destination as sleeping quarters: the first two floors are filled with exhibitions, and each room was designed by an artist. The Sunday bluegrass brunch is packed with children.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Toronto, Canada.

Lonely Planet review:

“The 37 artist-designed rooms at this trendsetting hotel could have leaped straight from a Taschen design book. Pick a room theme from the informative website, then when you arrive, take the hand-cranked birdcage elevator to your arty boudoir on the 3rd or 4th floor.”

Fodors review:

“If Andy Warhol and Lady Gaga dreamed up a hotel together, this would be it! The Gladstone has 37 artist-designed rooms–all of them quirky and fun–above the hotel’s busy art galleries and community event spaces.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Toronto.

Frommers review:

“The Gladstone, which is the longest continually operating hotel in Toronto (opened in 1889), is known today as Toronto’s art hotel. Christina Zeidler took over with her family in 2005, and now along with brick walls, wood floors, and high ceilings, it features galleries and 37 unique rooms designed by Canadian artists.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Toronto.

Telegraph review:

“Toronto’s oldest hotel today combines a boutique art hotel with a gallery, and it continues to be one of the biggest supporters of the Toronto art community in myriad ways. The biggest draw is the fact that each of the 37 rooms is designed by a different local artist.”

All you need to know

Gladstone House is a super cool boutique hotel tucked into the creatively buzzing West Queen West neighborhood in Toronto.

Built way back in 1889, this heritage building still rocks its original brick walls and hardwood floors, but with a modern twist—you’ll find clever lighting that shifts throughout the day and a ton of locally curated art all over the place.

Inside, it doesn’t feel like your typical hotel: there are 55 uniquely designed rooms, each featuring artwork by local artists.

On top of that, they’ve got a bistro + bar where you can grab food and cocktails, plus the “Cassette” space for drag shows, karaoke, DJs, and wild entertainment.

Fabulous

Great location! Was debating to stay more downtown or here and happy we chose here as the vibe is cooler and less crazy but there is still incredibly easy access into downtown on the trolley.

Funky renovated building and a great location in the west end

Staff were excellent and the room was really spacious for what we were expecting. The room was funky and everything in the hotel was very artsy and cool. Lovely old building and the renovations were really impressive. Heaps of cool little spots to have coffee or just hang out. The bar was really cool too. Also loved that there was a streetcar stop right outside!

The bathroom was kinda weird and had a seethrough window into it - which made us laugh but was a bit off putting so we would go to the bathroom without the light on a lot (especially in the night, otherwise it would basically illuminate the entire room). The shower drain was a little blocked and we asked them to address this but they couldn't fix it.

Very good

Room and whole of the hotel were beautiful! Great art and gorgeous details throughout. The elevator is the oldest in Toronto. The corner room was so pretty and the bay widows were so nice for lounging. Very responsive via text. Great restaurants nearby and lots to walk to.

No real storage. There was one drawer in the whole room. No closet. No shelves and just two bars with 8 hangers total. Thus, the room was always messy with the two of us. No in-room coffee. The bed was a bit too firm. The windows are not soundproof and the train is nearby, so we were happy we brought ear plugs and a noise machine (they also provided one, so we used both and slept well). No complimentary late check out.

Excellent

We really liked the area, lots of bars and restaurants. Such a lovely building, excellent room. Tram stop outside the hotel, very easy to get into town.

It was noisy at night on the street, but we didn't mind, just request a room at the back if preferring quiet.

Charming old hotel in a vibrant neighborhood.

This beautiful old hotel is located in a very active section of town, West Queen. There were shops, bars, and restaurants all around and plenty of foot traffic. The street car stopped directly in front of the hotel, making it easy to travel the mile and a half to town center. The hotel came with many little extras. A nice balcony on the second floor overlooking Queen Street where we took our morning coffee. There was a very fine pool table available and a coffee espresso maker. The staff was extremely helpful and very friendly. We parked our car across the street in a secure parking structure and left it there for three days.

There was nothing to complain about at this property.

Nice dog friendly hotel

The room was nice and clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There's a really cool old elevator that the staff operates for you. The hotel is dog friendly so that's great. And the location is great, lots of cafes, restaurants and bars in walking distance or able to catch the trolley out front easily to get around the city.

Amazing hotel, with amazing decor & art. Also very well located.

Very nice hotel, with some very nice decor and artwork. Set in a perfect location, with easy access to the city. Very nice staff & an fantastic elevator you’ll rarely experience again.

Parking was ok, when you find it. I’d suggest you research the parking before you arrive, including watching the video the hotel supplies. Then it will be simple enough. Rooms were a little small but very modern.

Wonderful and quirky place to stay…

The house is wonderful and we loved our rooms. The lounge areas on each floor was also wonderful for us a group. The elevator is super cute and they really made an effort to keep its old world charm.

The only thing I didn’t like about the room was the AC that was very loud and just habe one fan speed - which was full blast. But were able to turn it off! The location is convenient. And the tram in front of the door makes it easy to move around. We were a bit surprised that the area feels a bit run down but then again lots of restaurants and nice cafes 10-15min walking distance.

Oh & bed (& pillows) are super soft and shower products brilliant. Breakfast was top notch wow! Plus we loved lift & lift man & reception team. Thank you all - Perfection! ❤️🙏

A fun place to stay in a good location to tour little shops and neighborhoods!

Hotel was eccentric and fun. It was very beautiful and we loved the old touches like the elevator

The rooms were a bit smaller (bathroom right beside the bed) and we could hear water running through pipes all night

The location is perfect. Right on a trolley stop. It’s always clean and quiet. Despite being right in downtown. I was in town for a lecture. I was able to walk to the venue from Gladstone house. The parking is also inexpensive and conveniently located.

Wonderful choice

Great location, fun historical building with a great vibe. Rooms facing street are not very quiet so ask the hotel to give you backyard-facing room if you are sensitive to street noise

Exceptional

I loved everything about this hotel. It's very boutique so you don't feel like there's too many people around. The staff were friendly. The beds were super comfy and the location was perfect for us. So many restaurants, cafes and bars within walking distance. Near ossington and liberty village! We walked everywhere. Would definitely stay here the next time :)

Pleasant

Beautifully renovated hotel with friendly staff. A very cool feature elevator.

The hotel for 2 out of 4 nights had wedding events on which extended both times into the hotel lobby. This meant that the bar area also could not be used those evenings, which we were not informed about. It also felt rather awkward in holiday clothes "crashing" the wedding party by walking into the lobby and would have been much better if the event was kept in the bar area.

There for our 25th Anniversary and they were perfect !

Beautiful old building restored to perfection.

The parking was awkward to find first time. Also wish more tv channels or streaming available. First night after a long day of travel and The City we wanted to relax in our beautiful room and watch a movie. No rental or streaming channels available.

Great hotel, great location

Room was very comfy, great blackout blinds, comfy bed and pillows, fun white noise machine and quiet despite main road outside. Staff generally super friendly. Great location with tons in the local area. Bar was really nice, the manually operated lift was cool. Fun touches around the venue like a pool table for use on the 3rd floor.

Bathroom was lovely but the floor got super wet thanks to ineffective drainage so that was a bit inconvenient. Bath mat drenched after one shower. We also weren't made aware we needed to book for breakfast, so when we took seats in the bar in the morning expecting to order, we got barked at by the barman for not having reservations. That made us feel uncomfortable, so we went elsewhere to eat.

Very good

Always ask for a back room or a side room here as the front room are lovely but can be loud. My room was really really nice. Really nice person on the desk. They are generally nice folk on their front desk in my eperience. I've stayed here a fair few times.

nothing really. All good.

Quiet, Historical, Funky Art Deco Hotel - Clean and Comfortable

Funky and Fun Excellent service Quiet room and clean and comfortable bed Nice shower Nespresso machine in hallway and kettle in room Great location for shops, restaurants and the Parkdale Collegiate Insitute only 1 km that we attended for a Graduation LOVED the elevator and history of the place, artistic renderings in rooms with history and, photos throughout hotel. There is a nice lounge area where you can play chess and another where you can play billiards. Great wi fi Paid $411.50 for one night. And that’s with a discount. A bit pricey but so worth it for the fun and convenience it offered us.

Pouring rain when we arrived, so parking not that convenient being about a 3 in walk away at a cost of $30 p.n. As for the room it was sparse. It lacks enough power plugs, particularly at each side of the bed when you have to charge devices. Nice king bed but with only one shelf on one side and one bedside light. No comfortable armchairs or a sofa in what is supposed to be an upgraded room. Just a wooden bench under the TV.
