The Peninsula, Tokyo
The Peninsula Tokyo is an architectural standout in the Marunouchi district, designed by architect Kazukiyo Sato to resemble a traditional Japanese paper lantern. When illuminated at night, the amber granite tower glows softly against the city skyline. Opened in 2007, it holds the distinction of being the first freestanding luxury hotel built in Tokyo in over a decade, offering a private, self-contained oasis in a dense metropolis.
Art is deeply woven into the hotel’s DNA, with nearly 1,000 pieces on display, mostly by Japanese artists. A massive bamboo dragon sculpture by Keisen Hama greets guests in the lobby, symbolizing strength and harmony, while the main chandelier features over 1,300 crystal LED bulbs that mimic a shower of fireworks. The interior design, led by Yukio Hashimoto, masterfully blends contemporary aesthetics with traditional Japanese heritage, such as hand-woven cedar ceiling panels and sliding horse chestnut doors.
Beyond the design, the hotel is famous for its thoughtful, ultra-modern technology—including control panels that monitor local humidity and wind direction—and its legendary fleet of vehicles, which includes a rare 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II. The property also places a high value on holistic wellness, with a serene spa and an indoor pool featuring views of the Imperial Palace.
Location-wise, it is hard to beat. Positioned directly opposite the Imperial Palace Gardens and Hibiya Park, the hotel offers a peaceful green escape. It is also just a short walk from the upscale boutiques of Ginza, making it a perfect base for experiencing both Tokyo’s natural beauty and its most iconic shopping districts.
Expert reviews
“A Peninsula hotel is like that frustrating friend who, no matter how hard you look, has no flaws. Not one. The Peninsula Tokyo is located in the city’s ritzy Ginza district, a stroll away from designer boutiques and Michelin-starred restaurants.”
“Architect Kazukiyo Sato envisioned the freestanding Peninsula Tokyo — a rarity among hotels in the city — as a 24-story traditional Japanese lantern at the entrée to the Marunouchi and Ginza neighborhoods. And thanks to lighting designer Tino Kwan, at night the hotel’s soft glow makes it look like one.”
“Whereas The Peninsula Hong Kong capitalizes on its colonial-age splendor, this sister property strives for an understated Zen-like simplicity. Rooms, beginning at 51 sq. m. (544 sq. ft.), are among Tokyo’s largest, with the best facing the greenery of the Imperial Palace and Hibiya Park.”

“Some of the most spacious rooms in Tokyo can be found at The Peninsula, a 24-storey, rose-tinted tower inspired by a Japanese lantern. Expect unwavering service, panoramic views from the rooftop restaurant, legendary afternoon teas and a convenient location in Yurakucho.”

Very good location, very nice staff, beautiful room, great spa, but no atmosphere and very bad sofa bed
The location and some beautiful details about the room. The dressing room was great, kids goodies in the bathroom
The spa/pool be area is amazing
Breakfast is way too limited for westerners.
The sofa bed in our room was very uncomfortable (cheapest mattress ever)
The overall atmosphere is luxurious but also quite dead…coming back to the hotel at 21 was like entering a cemetery…maybe because it s off season, but other hotels we ve been to don’t present this situation at all…

A really nice way to start our Japan trip with 4 nights at the Peninsula. Hard to fault.
Great restaurants and service, large room with good views, pool and spa and opposite one of the mid town centres with restaurants, Christmas lights and coffee shops. A short walk to all the fun of ginza shopping and food. We’ll be back !

Excelent hotel in a premium location
Te breakfast restaurant is the worst part of this otherwise five-stars hotel. Placed the entrance, before reception, it is a la carte but the service is slow and cumbersome - perhaps a good thing, you est less…

Great hotel, great staff and service, but not greatest value.
As expected, a lovely 'Peninsula' experience. Staff are consistently helpful, friendly and polite, and we really appreciated the late checkout offered. The room was comfortable and we especially loved the spacious bathroom.
Unfortuanteyl we did find some broken chips of glass on the floor. And we felt for the high room rate, that breakfast could have been included, or at least offered at a reasonable cost - Y210 000 for our family of 3 was ridiculous.

Excellent experience overall. We had an issue with the bill, which was gracefully resolved
breakfast was excellent, no buffet though but we dont mind that. The location of the breakfast area is a little strange, being all in the open in the lobby.

This is the hotel I will stay again next year. Keep it up!
Great location. The room was comfortable and pretty quiet and spacious. All of the staff I encounter could speak English pretty well. (No offense) Shopping district is nearby. And lastly there is a train station beneath the hotel.
Knowing Tokyo Japan especially nearby Ginza, everything is quite expensive. If you want to stay pretty comfortable plus everything is near and budget is not a question, Peninsula Tokyo is the answer.

All good things, we are more than pleased with our decision to book at the Peninsula in Tokyo.
