Hostel Nui, Tokyo
Nui. Hostel & Bar Lounge, located in the creative Kuramae neighborhood, is a fantastic example of adaptive reuse. The building was once a traditional warehouse for a toy company with a history dating back to the Edo period. In 2012, it was thoughtfully renovated by a team of designers, carpenters, and craftspeople to create a space that bridges the gap between travelers and the local community.
The design is intentionally minimalist and warm, featuring exposed brick, rustic wooden accents, and massive windows that let in plenty of natural light. High ceilings on the ground floor create an open, airy environment that serves as the heart of the hostel. During the day, it’s a bustling cafe, while at night, it transforms into a lively bar that attracts as many locals as it does globetrotting backpackers.
What makes Nui truly special is its commitment to the philosophy of “beyond all borders.” The common areas are designed to encourage organic interaction, making it incredibly easy to strike up a conversation with someone from halfway across the world. For those needing a bit of solitude, there are also quieter common lounges on the upper floors to relax and recharge.
The location is a dream for explorers. You’re just a short walk from the banks of the Sumida River, offering a serene escape with beautiful skyline views. The historic Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa is also just a 15-minute stroll away, allowing you to soak in the traditional atmosphere of old Tokyo while remaining perfectly connected to the rest of the city.
Expert reviews
“In a former warehouse, the Nui hostel has raised the bar for stylish budget digs in Tokyo. High ceilings mean bunks you can comfortably sit up in and there is an enormous shared kitchen and work space.”

Trendy vibes, great location!
Loved my stay at Nui. Hostel & Bar Lounge! The bar and restaurant are a great vibe, delicious food, great drinks, and the inclusive breakfast is an absolute must. Everything looked even better than the menu photos and tasted incredible.
The hostel has a comfy, hipster, boho-chic vibe and is located in a quieter area of Tokyo while still being close to all the action. There’s also a big shrine about 15-minute walk away. The top-floor common space is perfect for relaxing, with strong Wi-Fi and a great communal kitchen.
The female-only floor felt safe and comfortable, and the bathrooms were spotless. The dorm room was clean, though a bit warm for my taste.
Overall, fantastic value and I’d happily stay here again!
Beds were not the most comfortable and the room was very warm and stuffy, if you slept on the top bunk it felt like a sauna.

Clean, simple dorms with nice bathrooms. The cafe downstairs is cute and delicious
The lounge and cafe is very chill and cute. Delicious coffee and food. The curtains on the dorm beds were good at blocking light, and I appreciated the complimentary ear plugs.
Not a very social hostel as a solo traveler

will definitely come back here if i am back to Tokyo again
Everything about this hostel was perfect! The location is great, the room is spacious, and the bed is both comfortable and clean. The bathroom is always well maintained, and the shower facilities are excellent, strong water pressure, and the shampoo and body wash smell amazing.
The overall vibe of the hostel and the surrounding area is fantastic. The staff were incredibly friendly and easygoing, and lots of them are looking very fashionable. Special mention to the tall guy with golden hair who helped me extend my stay , he was super cool and even tried (and struggled 😄) to pronounce my name haha, which made me smile.
The common area has a very relaxed, chill atmosphere, with free coffee and tea available for everyone. I truly loved my stay here and would absolutely come back.

i loved it, fantastic vibes, made me want to stay even longer! would definetely recommend this place.
basically like going to a lovely coffee shop & being allowed to sleep there. great vibes, lovely staff, deeply aesthetically pleasing and clean. plenty of people come here just for the fabulous brunch - get breakfast included! great for tokyo newcomers, met plenty of people even though i’m about as socially adept as a pea in its own personal pod.
honestly, not much at all. the check-in is quite late, but that’s the same everywhere, and you can have a great cup of coffee while you wait. it is quite far from the busier areas (shibuya/harujuku) but that’s also kind of a blessing.

Cute and convenient
The ladies powder room was very cute!
Friendly accomodating staff
Nice kitchen/chill area upstairs
Very clean and well looked after
Super central and close to krumae station on the asakasua line
Cafe downstairs wasn’t the most affordable in terms of hostels
Not a super social crowd
Otherwise couldn’t fault it!

The cafe and lounge area was nice. The staff are smiling. Cafe and highballs is fun.
The cafe/lounge area was very nice. 90% of the staff were extremely welcoming, professional, and helpful. The drinks and food at the cafe/lounge area is convenient to have at the hostel.
The sleeping rooms would get stuffy when full. 4 bunk beds (8 people) in a room, would get crowded when full.

Great hostel but its not social as mentioned in the reviews
Amazing facilities, very comfortable beds, walking distance from Asakusa and train stations.
I wont call this a social hostel. Even though they have a cafe and a common area, people hardly socialise

I would live here
am honestly sooooooo happy with this place!!! It might be my favourite hostel I’ve ever stayed in.
I stayed in an 8 bed female dorm which was spacious enough for everyone’s luggage. There are lockers in the room, you get a free towel and padlock. Everyone in the room was incredibly quiet and respectful.
The female only bathrooms were soooo good and well thought out !!! Immaculately clean, loads of room in the shower cubicles for clothes and hanging things. Theres some free cotton pads in there too. They even had a small bath which was incredible after a long day of walking.
The common room was so cozy and completely stocked with everything you’d need to cook. Such a nice vibe.
Downstairs there’s a cafe/bar which has such a nice atmosphere too.
The staff are all so wonderful, friendly, cool and helpful!
The only downside is that you have to make your own bed which is a bit of a pain after a long travel day
