Q Station Manly, Sydney

1 N Head Scenic Dr, Manly NSW 2095, Australia (show on map)

Q Station in Manly offers one of the most unique hotel experiences in Australia. Nestled within the Sydney Harbour National Park on North Head, this site served as the city’s Quarantine Station for 150 years, starting in 1832. Today, it has been thoughtfully transformed into a boutique heritage retreat where guests stay in the original, beautifully restored quarters that once housed arriving immigrants.

The property’s history is woven into every guest experience. You can even see historic carvings on the rocks along the escarpment, created by people quarantined here over a century ago. Because the site is protected, the rooms maintain their heritage charm—think high ceilings and period colors—without modern additions like air conditioning, though they are fully updated for comfort.

One of the standout features is its location; it is famously the only hotel in Sydney with its own private beach. You can spend your days paddleboarding or kayaking on the harbour, then dine at the Boilerhouse Kitchen & Bar, which is housed in the station’s historic powerhouse. The property is also well-known for its “after-dark” history and ghost tours, which dive into the fascinating and sometimes somber stories of the site’s past.

The hotel is perfectly positioned for nature lovers. You are just steps away from the North Head Sanctuary, where you can explore walking tracks, WW2-era artillery batteries at North Fort, and stunning lookout points. It’s a peaceful, secluded escape that feels a world away from the city, yet it is just a short shuttle ride from the bustling wharf at Manly.

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“History buffs and those in search of views and solitude will appreciate Q Station’s smartly refurbished rooms and historic cottages located inside a nook of the Sydney Harbour National Park in Manly. The grounds are dotted with historic buildings where guests can pass the time as quarantined migrants once did, playing billiards, table tennis or savoring the views of Sydney Harbour over cups of tea.”

Shortlisted in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Sydney, Australia.

Something a bit different.

The rooms are very clean.
It is a pretty spot to stay.

The shuttle bus isn't always as regular as stated.
Also there is no air conditioning and the room can get a little bit stuffy.

A beautiful retreat on Sydney Harbour.

I really enjoyed staying at Q Station. My room was clean and cozy with a comfy bed and a nice big bathtub. A had a partial view of the harbour and a deck to relax on. I loved the grounds, the variety of bushwalks and the beach was gorgeous.

The only minuses, which were few were the walls were thin and I could hear the neighbours talking.
There was no powerpoint beside the bed to charge my phone, but it wasn't a big issue.

Very enjoyable all round with the best location. Will bok again next year same time.

We have stayed here before, and the spectacular views were very well enjoyed again.
The room was clean and comfy. The breakfast each day is good.
The shuttle service was well organised and quick to respond.

The TV programs free to air is limited and the extra charge for movies is a bit steeper than we would like.

Lovely nights for 2 (couple). Make sure to eat there too.

Beautiful location. Simplicity and classical.

No aircon (was hot) and TV is mounted flat on walls instead of on angle arm. So don’t bother watching TV anyway. Lovely place though and it is what it is.

The view and access to the beach make up for everything else

Location, someone said this is Sydney’s best kept secret and I agree. It is in the city but it’s quiet. It’s peaceful without traveling too far away from the city.

The room is a little bit old. E.g. the toilet. My hair dryer was broken (the one connected to the bathroom) so I have to ask them to get me one. I understand that this is refurbished room. Hence, no fuss. Also lack of ventilation in the bathroom and not really powerful water from the shower but we get by. We only stay for 1 night so all of this is not a big deal. If you are staying longer maybe consider a bigger room? With different facilities.

Incredible peice of Australian history

Very unique location, lots of history to experience by having a wander around (many good signs).
The staff were super friendly, and the shuttle bus system around the property works pretty well.
The private beach is lovely, and the room was quite modern with a great bathroom.
I really enjoyed walking around looking for the hidden sandstone carvings, it would be nice if a track was made to check out the carvings at Old Man’s Hat.

The restaurant was unfortunately undergoing renovations and was closed - but the staff kindly dropped off uber eats at my accomodation.

Interesting heritage facility. A little on the expensive side

Great Location.
Throughout the weekend, the Shuttle Bus service provided was very good.

Poor Communication eg. links provided to obtain further information did not work.
Our booking included a sponsored "Long Lunch" . Had we been advised that the lunch was to be out doors we would have taken hats and sun screen.

Wonderful location fabulous food , great value for money .

The location is fabulous , breakfast excellent and The Boiler House Restaurant. The staff running the mini bus really fab .Room was comfortable , we would definitely return ..

A few small things could make a big difference . We stayed for 11 nights an there wasn’t really anywhere to put our clothes no draws and limited hanging space. Plug sockets next to the mirrors would be useful and by the side of the bed . Reception staff were a bit hit and miss no real engagement considering our length of stay ..

Beautiful spot but this cottage needs a freshen up.

Great location and very quiet.

Cleanliness was not great.
The house needs a deep clean.

Mouldy and damp smell in house.
Mould on blinds and in bathroom.
Even mouldy key label.

Best Place to Stay in Manly

I love the location - so quiet and peaceful. Plus parking - a rarity in this area! The views are gorgeous, there is a lot to see here, private beach and free shuttle to Manly.

TV was set at a low sound level, no doubt so you don't fisturb thr neighbours, but we couldn't hear it. Maybe supply headphones? Also not a smart TV so you couldn't login to eg Netflix. Not the end of the world as the views were very special.

Great location, average service from the kitchen.

Wonderful location. NIce, comfortable rooms with fans.

No air conditioning in the room, only fan. Acceptable, but not great. The breakfast did not have variety, very basic AT 9:30, there was no more sausages, only bacon. When asked about the sausages, there was no "sorry", just " no more sausages".

Great stay…short getaway.

Room was clean, breakfast was great and staff helpful.

Aircon would have been great.

The outdoor areas of the cabins were quite dirty…cobwebs and dust.

Gorgeous - we will be staying again!

Self-evidently, the location is amazing. Manly's North Head and the surrounding national park bushland and harbour views are exceptional. The Q Station complex is fascinating and has great heritage value. It's a glorious, gorgeous place to spend time.

Perhaps to be expected in the heritage buildings - but strictly from a comfort perspective there are 2 things to be aware of if these are important to you:
- No air conditioning (at least in our Harbourside Heritage Room) and the ceiling fan was rather underpowered. In the end of a Sydney summer, this made for a very hot and stuffy stay, even with the doors thrown open. It's something to be expected if you are considering staying in the warmer months. We would certainly have liked to have a more robust ceiling fan, if nothing else
- General musty smell inside the room. Again, perhaps to be expected given we're talking heritage buildings. In no way did it ruin our stay, but it does take the overall experience down a notch or so

Unique accommodation, exceptional harborside location

Fabulous water views over the harbor, private, quiet, and situated within an environmental and wildlife sanctuary reserve, while preserving an historic building precinct for quarantine services which is a unique experience within itself. Loved the small, quiet beach and enjoyed sitting under the shade of a huge pine tree in the timber deck chairs.

While the ocean breezes cooled us down on the wide verandah surrounding the unit, inside there is no air-conditioning and the fans are not very effective. Portable air-condition units in the height of summer would make it much more comfortable, or screens on the doors so you can leave them open at night. Otherwise, stay in winter, as there are heating units in the rooms. Options for meals onsite minimal during the week, very small fridge in unit and no kitchen facilities in the room or elsewhere onsite. Paid $19 for a toasted sandwich at the cafe on the wharf. The guest lounge, while a lovely room, had a musty smell, so not very inviting to spend time in.

Nice little beach and good cafe. Restaurant was great.

Location

Our room with a view didn’t have the door to open up to the verandah.
