Expert reviews

Forbes review:

“History and romance abound at the striking San Domenico Palace, Taormina, a Four Seasons Hotel. With its scenic location on a cliff overlooking Taormina’s winding alleyways, majestic Mount Etna and the bright blue Ionian Sea, the 111-room luxury hotel in Sicily occupies a former 19th-century palace, which was itself a Dominican convent dating back to 1373.”

Fodors review:

“The sweeping views of the castle, the sea, and Mount Etna from this converted 14th-century Dominican monastery will linger in your mind, along with the equally memorable levels of luxury and wonderful food in the hotel’s highly lauded restaurant, Principe Cerami”

Telegraph review:

“Dating back to the 14th century, this magnificent former monastery, which has been a hotel since 1896, stands on the cliffs overlooking the Ionian Sea in Taormina, with Mount Etna to its right and the city’s ancient Greek theatre to its left.”

Extraordinary property! Spectacular grounds! Amazing staff! Jaw Dropping Views.. Not to be missed.

Exceptional service and a beautiful hotel. The team was supper attentive and happy to assist with everything. Room was very clean and the shower and bathroom are great. Bed is very comfortable with the best sheets!!! Have to find to buy! Best sheets ever. Breakfast is great with nice selection of food and great service. The view, the gardens simply jaw dropping gorgeous! Lovely entertainment in the courtyard after dinner. Simply beautiful, luxurious and AA+++ experience. Already booked for next year!

our room was tinny-tiny, but its an old monastery, so its to be expected. Its not preventing us from coming back. We enjoy a cocktail before heading out to dinner. and the drinks are tinny-tiny as well. Don't get me wrong, we are not huge drinkers. A standard martini is about 6 oz. These we maybe 3oz and cost 28EU.

A true visual feast for the eyes, and a refuge from the frenzy of Taormina

staff were professional and provided excellent service.

the wine list was not comprehensive, by the glass mostly Italian wines. television did not have what was advertised by the Hotel on the website. there always seemed to be people in my room either repairing things, delivering items which could easily be provided in the room initially, or overly servicing.

An exceptional historic hotel - one of the best in the world.

Have travelled extensively for both work and pleasure - this is the best hotel we have stayed in, anywhere in the world. The staff are absolutely exceptional- professional, consistent and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble and everything is done to the highest standard. A special mention to Denise who was a very special host. The hotel itself is remarkable. Historic and painstakingly restored- the perfect balance between old and new. Some parts of the hotel feel like you are in a museum. The court yard next to reception is charming and a place we really enjoyed having an evening drink in after the stunning pool and before dinner. We also thought the food at Massimo Manttaro’s restaurant was the best we ate at in Sicily (far better than up the road at the Belmond). An exceptional stay in every respect, words don’t do it justice.

The hotel is expensive… but we left feeling like it was worth every cent.

Unforgettable 4 days at the best Four Seasons Hotel I’ve experienced so far.

Amazing property, beautiful location, incredible attention to each and every detail.

It is really hard to find something that you don’t like about this amazing ex monastery, turned into probably the most luxurious Four Seasons hotel

loved every second of it. Worth the price and one of the most beautiful stays in Europe hands down.

San Domenico’s location is exceptional. An old monastery in the heart of Taormina with an absolutely stunning view of both Smokey Mt. Etna and 2 beautiful sun-kissed bays with the postcard like composition of yachts and boats. Yes it’s pricey but you’ll forget that the moment you’re in the experienced and graceful hands of the mostly local staff. “No” is never an answer and the amenities live up to and over deliver your expectations. Two great restaurants and terraces to your disposal at the hotel in addition to the already abundant presence of Michelin listed and local mom and pop style Italian restaurants within walking distance. Affiliations with beach clubs make a trip down to the bay very easy albeit with a taxi. Allround it’s worth every penny. I’ve been to quite a few Four seasons hotels and never do they disappoint but this is something else! I have to mention it’s also brand new, so the shine is extra present. loved every second of our stay.

Not a lot to mention here. Yes it’s pricey and therefore unfortunately not for everyone. but even just for 2 days, it’s worth it and unforgettable. We didn’t not have a sea view suite due to it’s price and we didn’t feel we missed out too much. Views galore in the garden and pool area. Pricing can be a hurdle so I guess that makes for a lesser liked aspect but it’s debatable what luxury at this level can and should cost in general.

Fabulous

The room and the building were lovely. The cleanliness was very very good and they had lovely little touches with the turn down serivce. The swimming pool area was busy and buzzers were given to request food and drink but were rarely answered. The pool restaurant and bar was lovely and food was very good. The gardens are beautiful and the hotel has wonderful views.

The service at the pool and breakfast was very friendly, but slow. On check out our bill was wrong and included an extra meal which took some deciphering.

Exceptional

Of all the top end hotels we have stayed in the world, this newly renovated hotel must rank among the top. The design blends seamlessly modern and the old with meticulous attention to details. The location is simply stunning right on top of a cliff over looking the ocean within a few minutes work to the Main Street. Taormina is on par with Santorini in terms of touristic attraction. The service is outstanding. We particularly like to highlight Rosario, Stefano and Marco who seem really enjoy their work. Well done to them and their team. If budget is not an issue I would highly recommend this exceptionally elegant hotel in all aspects.

We are coming back

The level of care and effort put into making our stay memorable and worthwhile was impressive. Among others, special thanks to Irene and her two amazing fellow colleagues from Principe Cerami and Adriano from breakfast for the enormous levels of personal service during our stay. We’ll forever be craving for more of pastry chef Vicenzo’s dessert masterpieces like the white chocolate peanut which was just unbelievably creative and delicious! The biggest hats off goes to Francesco for an impeccable hospitality and leading the way to create an impression that will stay with us for a lifetime!

You will pinch your self every day there!

Everything especially the little details that should make this a 6 star resort! The views the service the food in all restaurants but the fine dining! We had the experience of the famous chef on this property and the experience was amazing the restaurant staff were incredible!

There was nothing we didn’t like when we were there! This place was perfection! Except …..I. Don’t want to put him down but taste and produce wise at the fine dining restaurant didn’t meet out expectations as a former 2 Michelin star chef and with the reputation he has on this island we were so surprised! Remember the experience was no a let down! Now I also made a mistake and left a couple of expensive sport jackets in the closet on check out! Having said that For a hotel who gave us so much amazing service and attention Whilst we were there and charges 2200€/night for moderate room you would think I’d have gotten a call( they had both my Australian number and Italian number) or an email that I’d left behind a couple of expensive belongings???? Well They didn’t! Still it was my fault I admit that! All has been rectified and my suits will be in my possession soon 🙏🏻. Thank you San Dominico palace for a fantasy stay! We will be back almost yearly.

Very good

Very good location, amazing view and nice rooms. Excellent room service. Pool location and garden is also very nice. Bed comfortable. Every das fresh fruits on table.

We had to wait long for breakfast( too man guests) and it was overpriced for the whole eyperience. Problems when checkout( money was reserved twice from card and was kept for 2 weeks after the trip!!!) So you have to have twice the price for 2 weeks on your card. Longest and most problematic checkin amd checkout. Coctails at the bar and breakfast not the best( should be better for this money)

Pleasant

The San Domenico Palace is a beautifully restored property. Our room was beautiful and we were upgraded to a sea view with balcony.

There wasn’t a bath in our room.

Very good

The location is fantastic and the hotel has been beautifully renovated to a very high standard. The breakfast spread/menu were excellent. The pool area is delightful although I personally would have appreciated some heating of the pool itself - the water was ice cold which may be fine at the height of summer but at the beginning of October it was really too cold for comfort for me. Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful.

We only had dinner in the hotel once, in the Restaurant Rosso, which was such a bad experience we did not want to repeat it or try the other restaurant. They did not seem to have a sommelier, after quite a wait we were offered white wine which was not cold so we rejected it, then another which was very mediocre (a little cooler) by which time I had lost interest in drinking any wine and my husband settled for an acceptable glass of red. The service we received throughout the meal was indifferent verging on rude. The waiters did not make eye contact, asked ‘the right questions’ but didn’t really wait for or show any interest in the answer. I am sure they don’t really care whether guests enjoy their dinner or not but they need to do better than very obviously just go through the motions. To top it all, the meal which consisted of two main courses and one glass of wine, cost a whopping €100! It was the worst value for money we received during our whole trip to Sicily. We were however looking forward to breakfast the next morning. The food itself was very good but each time we wanted something we had a battle to get the attention of one of the numerous waiters hovering around but apparently not noticing whether any of their guests were trying to get their attention! After requesting a second cappuccino several times and waiting 20 minutes from the time of the first request we gave up and left! This hotel could be amazing if the staff received the right training!
