Hostal Rio Amazonas, Santiago
Hostal Rio Amazonas is a charming, family-run boutique hotel tucked away in the heart of Santiago. The property is housed in a beautiful Tudor-style mansion built in 1929, which once served as the home of Luis Risopatrón, a famous Chilean geographer who created the first atlas of Chilean Patagonia. Today, the mansion is recognized as a historic and architectural landmark, having been thoughtfully renovated to blend its vintage character with modern comfort.
The hotel feels more like a private residence than a traditional hostel, featuring colorful, bright decor and art pieces often created by the owners themselves. Guests can relax in a tranquil garden area, unwind on the sun terrace, or browse the cozy library. The atmosphere is consistently praised for being welcoming and intimate, thanks in part to the friendly, multilingual staff who provide a very personal touch to the guest experience.
Its location near the Baquedano metro station makes it an unbeatable base for exploring the city. You are within walking distance of vibrant neighborhoods like the bohemian Barrio Bellavista, known for its nightlife, and the Lastarria district, which is filled with gastronomy and cultural venues.
Whether you are looking to visit the nearby Museo Violeta Parra, wander through the historic parks, or grab a drink in the lively Patio Bellavista, the hostel’s central position is perfect. It offers a serene, historic sanctuary that keeps you connected to the energy and culture of Santiago while providing a peaceful place to rest at the end of the day.

Very nice hotel in one of the best neighborhoods of Santiago. Claudia and Carolina are friendly hosts and made me feel q
In a very good neighborhood of Santiago…close to many nice restaurants. Kind and welcoming hosts.
I had one of the economy single rooms and the shower was very difficult to clean yourself - due to the very small size. Also, the noise from the road can be heard most of the night in these rooms.
The next time I will spend a little more and book a superior single room for the advice of the hotel.

Great choice for a Santiago city trip
Very cute and cosy place in a good location. We were in the private double room which was spacious and comfy. The style is charming (feels a bit old / not modern, but in a good way - it has character). It’s in a safe neighborhood within easy walking distance of some of the main sights and areas with restaurants. I really liked the colorful decorations and the staff was always friendly and helpful. We did not try the breakfast or other meals that are served but enjoyed a drink in the little courtyard. The reception staff can help you with all kinds of services like taxis, laundry, tours.
Toiletries are only provided in the form of solid pieces of soap; would have appreciated some shower gel and shampoo.

Love its cosy and homely atmosphere
Great value for money. Excellent location: metro, money exchange, pharmacy, bars and supermarket are all within short walking distance. The dining area of BarraVista is 10-min walk. Very convenient to go to the bus terminals. The Hostal itself is a historical building with a lovely courtyard and a bar area where you can hang out with other travelers. All staff are friendly and welcoming. It has an atmosphere of feeling relaxed and at home in a country far from home. I highly recommend it!
I stayed in both single economic and single superior room. If budget permits, try the single superior, quieter and cooler with a large space.

Good experience this time
This was our second stay and a much nicer room, more spacious and decent beds, and the room was cooler.
Would be even better with a/c 😀

Lovely, cozy place to stay and feel at home in a very big city.
Room was comfortable and quiet in great neighborhood close to lots of restaurants, museums and parks. Staff was great--personable, warm and helpful; felt like staying with family.
Street noise and heat meant I couldn't sit out on balcony.

We were able to spend a very relaxing time and recover from the fatigue of our journey.
The friendly staff, the owner’s philosophy, the music in the lobby, the historic and beautiful architecture, and the very atmosphere itself were wonderful.

Fantastic location, vibe & hospitality.
A wonderful location, with a clean room & homely atmosphere. The staff were super friendly & helpful both during booking & stay. I would definitely stay here again.
Nothing negative to say about the hostal - the room was small - as advertised but with a very functional set up. It was hot - but that’s the Santiago weather & nothing the fan + cool washer couldn’t fix.

Wonderful - we’d stay here again and recommend to others.
It felt like a home away from home. Staff were welcoming and helpful. There are lovely common areas in which to read or socialize. There are books to borrow and lots of travel guides. Luggage storage was great. Breakfast was substantial.
The location is excellent but noisy. Some of the rooms can have street noise. The rooms do not have safes or mini-fridges.

Absolutely wonderful staff. Too tired to go out on two nights so I ate there and the food was very good and reasonable.
Wonderful staff and great food.
It was a bit rundown.

So much character, really an original.
The staff was most helpful. Caroline checked me in with a genuine smile and a custom map and info about Santiago.
This repurposed hostel from a former home has history as it was constructed at the turn of the century for a prominent persona and family.
The vibe is artsy with really fun selections of visual distractions and color. Catchy sound selections spilling from the speakers during working hours wrap around the guests. This grand dam of a former home is just really fun to explore. The outdoor garden dining area is available when weather is permitting. Sun tarps help keep the area comfortable. Indoor dining is also available with a full bar. My room happened to be a double with an elevated deck above the main street. A private up to date bath is provided. With surrounding palms and ferns it reminds me of Tangiers., Morocco.
Oh yes, real coffee is served.
I was hoping the shower would have a bit more water delivery but it might just have been my unit.
Even though my room faced the main street, noise was minimized by heavy and thick double doors. But the occasional racer could be loud regardless.

Great location in Santiago!
Great location in Santiago to walk to several neighborhoods. Very convenient and felt very safe. Common areas were very comfortable and available. Hosts kindly accommodated our request for ground floor room needed due to injury and room with fireplace was very very comfortable. Would stay here again!
Rooms facing main boulevard can be a little noisy but keeping windows closed mostly dampened sound.

Hostal Rio Amazones is the place to stay in Santiago!
The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. The Hostal Rio Amazones gives out its own map and travel guide, which includes train routes, recommendations for areas to see, and the estimated time required to visit them. Catherine, the host, has loads of ideas for activities to do, given the amount of time available each day. She also helps book taxi's and excursions. Although it's called a "hostel," I would consider it more of a "bed and breakfast." There are options for food and drink to order, the space is decorated in Bohemian style with a lot of local art, and it's got a funky vibe. It's near the University, the city center, a walk away from the funicular, which will take you to the Virgin Mary, and several other major attractions. Catherine knows all the deals and best things to do at economical prices. She also guides you on how to stay safe in Santiago. I also loved this location because it appears to be a women-owned and operated business, with a strong emphasis on hiring female staff and providers. LGBTQ friendly -- if that's important to you. But overall, just a super welcoming place. Rooms are basic but well-maintained -- good bedding, clean, fully functioning bathrooms. Excellent value for your money. Feels like you've gone home to mom's house.
The only thing that was problematic was outside noise. We opened the windows to enjoy the fresh air and the street noise was very, very loud for us. We're not used to city noise so it made it hard for us to sleep. The noise died down around 1-2 a.m. We're talking car noise, sirens, motorcycles, people talking/screaming. Closing the windows helped as would good earplugs.
