The Hotel Castro, San Francisco

Didn't know what to expect from a hotel where there was no staff on site. I was blown away! For an area with such limited space it is amazing & beautifully done. The room was clean with a very modern feel to it. Lots of light and even a small balcony. The "chips" they left for me bought a round of drinks at the bar downstairs. The rosemary fries and dipping sauce are delicious! The rooftop is equally beautiful and relaxing. A special shout out to Ryan! We only communicated via text, but he was awesome! I left something behind and texted him at 2:30AM 4 days after I left. I was shocked to get an immediate response from him! He assured me he would locate my lost item and get it back to me. We texted back & forth until 3:15AM. Who does that? That is incredible service and absolutely elevated my guest experience. Thank you, Ryan! You're a Rockstar! I look forward to staying at the Hotel Castro again!

Great location with supermarket across the street, easy access to public transport

Room 304 at the back of the building. No street noise but vent filter at the back of the building ran 24/7. Loud engine noise not ideal if you just want peace and quiet. Could hear neighbors having a domestic argument.

No room for luggage. No staff to talk to. We were promised a bigger room but the property manager “I will be back in a few minutes” never got back to us. Since there is no lobby, no reception and no staff, we had to call Kasa in LOS Angeles to solve our problems. Finally, we had 2 TV sets in the room but only 1 remote control.

It was súper comfy the room, and the process of a virtual front desk at first i was a bit scared of it but it worked so smoothly, I’ll definitely be back Loved they don’t use single use plastic and have the water filtre available for everyone to refill bottles

we arrived at building with no staff onsite. self checkin assigned a room on 4th floor. on entering the building we found the lift out of order, so step-free access advertised, and which we needed, was not possible. other guests informed us this had been the case for some time. property did not respond promptly on their online chat system and did not pick up when we called. property refused to cover costs incurred by their failure to have room accessible (such as calls to booking.com to resolve situation and cost of taxi to alternative accommodation).when property did get in contact later, Many nice words, but no action---communation was annoyingly fake.

Comfy bed, hospitable concierge and the ac worked well.

It was clean and near a lot of good restaurants and bars.

No iron to iron my clothes

Location to everything was great.

Virtual everything from front desk to check in. Missing supplies such as soap, and no one around to help. Missing coffee cups and electric shades that randomly opened and closed.

There was no kettle to make tea and when I asked for one upon checking in, it wasn’t provided before I checked out.

My early check-in request was granted, it was so easy to check-in, the room was everything I needed, and the area was incredible. Better yet, two drink chips for the bar downstairs was a lovely surprise!

Steam iron didn’t work

Braitiful central Castro location. We enjoyed the free drinks in the Lobby Bar on the first floor. The rooftop terrace had a great view. Nice Nespresso coffee machine in the room!

Very small, HK hotel standards for the price. Room was very humid and smelled but at least the windows could open to air it out.

Room was so small. Couldn’t address a request for more toilet paper made in the morning until the next day.

For the price you expect a hot shower. The hot water became luke warm after a minute or two of use at peak times in the morning and evening. Management said they would fix the issue but it still persisted. Room could have been cleaner.

Location is only salvation. Close to great Pasta restaurant Pasta Panino. The room was saved by the huge floor to ceiling windows & the well done "balcony" foliage.

The room was small and cramped. No sink in bathroom Sink in room has faucet descending too far into sink-- could only take for quick stay. I was told the room was large enough for 6 (?!???!) people and originally had planned to have a friend come stay. Well that ended once I saw the space. NO WAY could two people manage 3 days there as friends. I had to ask her not to come! And I got the "King Suite". The room was not clean for standard or for price-- stains on cabinet doors. Dust clumps (large) tissues & other items wedged between wall & bed. I asked for room service, saw the worker who said she had not gotten request (?) but would come back at 3 -- never saw her again. The sounds of the room above me were very noisy with their feet loudly stomping around for 2 nights-- not a problem but to be noted. I was shocked on arrival at size of room compared to photos/ ads. I called to ask for different room-- no concern/ o room/ no check back from the 650 # advertising "24 hour concierge service". I have photos of broken socket cover and oily cabinet doors

The location was excellent and the room was very clean. Also the rooftop was amazing.

The sink spout was pretty low

We loved pretty much everything, especially sleeping with Freddy Mercury and the location was top notch. The beds were fabulously comfortable. The response to my call regarding the elevator breakdown was very rapid and the CV of communication by email was excellent. These things happen so we don't blame the hotel one bit. Unlike previous guests on the second floor, we had no noise nuisance issues from the Lobby Bar below.

There was only one chair in the room. We used the patio chair which we brought inside. The corner of the room with the table could have done with a lamp of some description. The toilet roll holder in the bathroom was not secured to the wall. When the elevator was out of service , there was no way of re-entering the building via the fire escape as the fire door on the first floor requires a key. I had to wedge the fire doors open using towels from the room. It would have been great to have a soap dispenser next to the sink in the bedroom instead of having to use soap from the shower.

The location it great.

This is not a hotel, the standard, facilities and service are about 3 star. At over $1000 for two nights it is not acceptable. I submitted my complaint directly to Kasa who manages the service and received a partial refund which was not acceptable given the numerous issues I had.

I loved this hotel so much I almost don't want to leave a review because I don't want too many people to stay there and spoil it. Hotels outside of the Union Square area are hard to find and this one was perfect. The Castro is safe, clean and a real San Francisco neighborhood. My room was bright, clean, and so comfortable I never wanted to leave. And the design has a true boutique feel as opposed to just another corporate hotel. I loved the balcony overlooking gardens of local homes, as well as the view of the hills in the distance. I don't know if there were people staying on either side of me but I could hear the person above me every morning--walking around, moving things, etc--to the point that it woke me up but I'm a light sleeper so I just popped in my ear plugs. The rooftop views were phenomenal, better than any rooftop bar in the area. Lovely to watch the sunset. And there's an electric fire pit as well, though if it's windy I would not recommend using it. The Lobby Bar next door was an easy place to grab a drink from friendly bartenders. The crowd was a mix of locals and people staying in the hotel. There is a grocery store across the street and plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance. Mission Dolores Park is about a 10 min walk away. And either on foot or by public transit, it is quick and easy to access other great SF neighborhoods as well. I personally really liked the virtual aspect of the hotel. Checking in and out via the app was easy and adds privacy and removes moments of social anxiety. And as someone who doesn't like my room cleaned every day in a hotel because I like my things to be left "just so," I appreciated that you have to request cleaning via the app if your stay is under a certain amount of days. I was sad to leave and can't wait to come back.
