Hotel Zetta, San Francisco

55 5th St, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA (show on map)

Hotel Zetta is a creative, tech-forward retreat located in San Francisco’s SoMa district. Designed by Dawson Design Associates, the hotel was crafted to cater to a “tech-geek” lifestyle, blending high-end luxury with a playful, interactive atmosphere. The lobby serves as a social hub featuring a massive, two-story Plinko wall where guests can drop balls from the mezzanine to win prizes, instantly setting a lighthearted tone.

The hotel’s design is a masterclass in creative recycling. You’ll find unique art installations throughout the property, such as a life-sized Great Dane sculpture made from salvaged forks and bolts, chandeliers crafted from recycled eyeglasses, and a backlit wall comprised of hundreds of vintage Alcatraz prisoner mug shots. Even the guest room desks are made from heavy-duty butcher-block chef tables, while the room décor features playful nods to local tech culture.

Socializing is at the heart of the experience here. The second-floor “Playroom” acts as a stylish man-cave equipped with pool tables, shuffleboard, and gaming consoles, all surrounded by walls paneled with reclaimed doors. For dining, the hotel houses The Cavalier, a popular British-style brasserie that is a favorite among locals for its inventive menu and lively, upscale environment.

Its central location makes it incredibly convenient for sightseeing. You are just a short walk away from the bustling Union Square shopping district and the Moscone Center. Whether you’re there for business or play, the hotel’s clever blend of history, humor, and modern convenience provides a distinctively San Franciscan experience.

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“Stay at the playful, tech-savvy Hotel Zetta, well situated downtown in SoMa and near the Powell Street BART station; it’s Viceroy Hotels’ first San Francisco property and home to the Cavalier, a modern British-style gastro pub by the local restaurateur-chef team Anna Weinberg and Jennifer Puccio.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in San Francisco.

Fodors review:

“With a playful lobby lounge, the lively Cavalier restaurant, and slick-yet-homey tech-friendly rooms, this trendy redo behind a stately 1913 neoclassical facade is a leader in the SoMa hotel scene.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in San Francisco.

Telegraph review:

“This millennial-leaning hotel is all about fun: just look at the split-level lobby, where guests can play shuffleboard and virtual reality video-games. Though guestrooms’ techie design cues aren’t particularly cosy, the central location and ample space make boutiquey Zetta a bargain.”

Great hotel, could have been an excellent stay, just enough wrong to be somewhat disappointing

Really liked the decor of the property and room. Comfortable bed. Good location, especially if you are doing anything at Moscone Center.

Valet parking is rough and slow. Only one elevator operational. Shower head AWFUL. No options for early morning coffee. Some desk staff seem unconcerned with customer service (cleaning staff excellent)

It was comfy, comfortable, and protected. You must have your key card to get into and out of the building, as well as to

All the staff we came in contact with said hello or more. The front desk personal were extremely kind, helpful, and accommodating. We got there early and the woman at the front let us in early, upgraded our room to a suite, and wine and two glasses for us waiting for our anniversary. We loved that the buses were right there and optional parking was within a block.

I loved the property and I knew the location was going to be a little rough with homeless, but it was really mostly just LATE at night. The only option for this specific property was valet which is $65 per day (not per night). This is understandable for the area, but it was something that had us park at a different parking garage.

The room was cool, they stay would’ve been cheaper had I now you guess didn’t really have a breakfast area like most ho

The game area was cool, nice place to game with your partner.

You charge for breakfast, but it wasn’t even a breakfast area. You just get bagel and coffee.. It would’ve been dope to know that

Nice, clean hotel, easy check-in and out. Nice continental “breakfast” for Mother’s Day

Close to where my son lives on Market. Room was comfortable. Not too expensive. Felt relatively safe considering the homeless/drug crisis in the surrounding area

Water pressure was terrible and A/C was just ok

A decent place to stay if you need to attend a conference at the Moscone Center

The location is good with excellent connection to the airport. Other areas of SF, such as Chinatown or the piers are walking distance from this hotel.

While the room was generally clean, some areas were dusty (i.e. the vents). Moreover, every evening it the smell of fried food came out of the vents.

Best game room stay!

The front desk staff was great!! Thank you Rico and Paris! The games were wonderful way for us to spend time with our child. The view was ok for us not something we see everyday in Socal!

The security inside was more concerned about us entering the game room for games than the door.

Great stay but disappointing breakfast.

The room was spacious and comfortable. The bed was very comfortable with very fluffy, cozy bedding. The facility was clean and well maintained. I didn't take advantage of the services this time but you could tell this hotel is very dog friendly. Their attached restaurant and bar lounge area also looked very nice but my schedule did not allow for me to enjoy them.

I was disappointed at the breakfast offering. They only had grab and go breakfast which is fine; but was crazy overpriced. Since they have an attached restaurant, I would have liked to have a warm, made to order breakfast. If getting breakfast, pass on it here and get it at a cafe near by.

Great hotel in the central part of the city.

The room was large and nice with a very comfortable bed and a roomy bathroom. The staff was helpful and very pleasant. The location was fantastic with access to buses, streetcars, and the Powell cable car just a few hundreds yards away. We were able to easily travel to any part of the city.

Fun, unique hotel for a decent price!

The room was nice and unique. It was a little warm in the room, so I opened the windows -- which was a nice perk to be able to do! I also really loved the illy espresso machine - nice touch.

The valet parking situation could use a little help. There was one person working the valet, so we had to wait about 15 minutes in between trips! I did not like that it was hot in the room. The thermostat was set to 65 with the fan set to "on" and it was not cool enough -- obviously an A/C issue.

Perfect for a quick stay to see the city

Decent hotel in the heart of SF, making it easy to get anywhere in the city. No need for a rental car here (we personally changed our car reservation to not have one during our stay, since it’s valet only and no in/out option). The surrounding area gets a little dicey at night but just have your wits about you. Staff was friendly, room was spacious.

We were told of a “grab and go” breakfast in the morning but when we arrived downstairs, there was only coffee. We opted to visit the cafe next door instead. Also, the $40 guest amenity fee is bizarre, even though we didn’t use any of the “amenities”

Fantastic place for a family stay in downtown SF

Spacious rooms. Clean. ‘Playroom’ was actually a games room with free pool table, pinball, shuffleboard (great fun) and other games like giant Unp available from reception. Gym with high-quality equipment. Very helpful/courteous staff. Close proximity to Market- and Powell St transportation. Public parking ($44 per 24 hours) one block away

Limited breakfast/dining options at the property

Clean, comfortable hotel in the heart of SF.

The bed was comfy. Good storage, and a nice shower.

The AC didn’t work my first night, but the staff fixed it the next day and I was nice and cool the rest of my stay.

I was happy enough to stay there again

Liked the service (Rico). TV. Liked the bathroom and large window.

Would have liked to open a window. Only one chair in room with 2 beds, so 2 people. Needed another chair to watch tv.
