The Lodge at Torrey Pines, San Diego
The Lodge at Torrey Pines is a masterpiece of the California Craftsman aesthetic, situated on a dramatic bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, San Diego. Opened in 2002, the resort is a meticulous homage to the early 1900s “ultimate bungalows” designed by brothers Charles and Henry Greene. Its architecture features intricate post-and-beam construction, “clinker” bricks, and custom stained glass, all designed to make the modern hotel feel like a historic residence.
The attention to detail is remarkable; the lobby’s grand entrance doors were created by the same studio that worked with the Greene brothers a century ago, and the furniture is custom-built in the Stickley style. While the main architecture celebrates the Arts and Crafts movement, the on-site spa takes a surprising turn, drawing inspiration from the Scottish designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It is common to see the hotel doormen wearing kilts as a nod to this unique design influence.
Beyond its stunning design, the hotel sits directly adjacent to the legendary Torrey Pines Golf Course, host to multiple U.S. Opens. For nature enthusiasts, it is steps away from the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, which offers miles of hiking trails through rare pine groves and sandstone cliffs.
Whether you are watching paragliders at the nearby Torrey Pines Gliderport, exploring the marine life at the Birch Aquarium, or enjoying the world-class dining at the hotel’s A.R. Valentien restaurant, the location provides a perfect balance of refined luxury and rugged coastal beauty.
Expert reviews
“This picturesque luxury resort on a coastal bluff north of La Jolla is a monument to the California Craftsman architectural tradition. Kilted doormen usher you through stained-glass doors into a magnificent lobby with vaulted ceilings, a grand fireplace, and rich wood accents.”

“The Lodge at Torrey Pines feels like the kind of place that’s been around for at least a century. Designed in the classic early California Craftsman style, the timbered hotel features handsome woodwork, tiled fireplaces, and Mission furnishings.”

“The view is gorgeous, but many are drawn by another aspect of the location: the lodge neighbors the 18th hole of one of the world’s most acclaimed golf courses. Tee times are guaranteed for guests who want to try their hand at the championship course.”

Wonderful hotel that lacks the personal touch of service the premier properties have
Setting, architecture of resort. Multiple places to sit and take in the views. Good at both the Grill and ARV were outstanding
Cleanliness around the pool area. Hot tub had empty wine glasses and used towels laying around it all afternoon. The tile around the hot tub had napkins, silverware and a scrunchie. The hot tub itself had a considerable amount of sand in it. Staff wasn’t outwardly helpful

Pleasant but not worth the money.
It was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful.
It was old and dated. The spa needs an update and so do the rooms!

Clean, comfortable but over priced with limited food options
Room was a really good size, pool was lovely and the staff were very attentive.
The room was very dark, breakfast wasn’t included and in general it felt over priced. Dinner options were also limited
