Known as the “Pink Lady of La Jolla,” La Valencia Hotel is a true icon of Southern California glamour. Designed by architects Reginald Johnson and Herbert Mann, this Mediterranean-style treasure first opened its doors in 1926. Over the decades, it became a legendary hideaway for Hollywood’s elite, including legends like Charlie Chaplin and Gregory Peck, who were drawn to its stunning clifftop location overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
The architecture is instantly recognizable by its signature pink stucco façade, ornate Spanish tilework, and a striking mosaic-tiled tower that dominates the La Jolla skyline. Inside, you’ll find vintage charm mixed with modern luxury, featuring hand-painted murals and exquisite wood carvings that transport you back to the Golden Age of cinema. The iconic lobby, with its beautiful archways, remains a local landmark.
The hotel’s location is perfect for those looking to enjoy the best of San Diego’s coast. It sits just steps away from the famous La Jolla Cove, where you can watch sea lions lounging on the rocks. Nearby attractions include the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, which is practically next door, and the beautiful Ellen Browning Scripps Park, ideal for a scenic picnic.
Whether you are enjoying a cocktail at the Mediterranean-style terrace overlooking the ocean or exploring the upscale boutiques and art galleries lining the village streets, La Valencia offers a quintessential coastal experience. It remains a timeless retreat that perfectly captures the relaxed, sophisticated spirit of La Jolla.
Expert reviews
“This 1926 pink-walled, Mediterranean-style landmark was designed by William Templeton Johnson. Among its 115 rooms, those in the main building are rather compact while the villas are spacious, but the property wins for its Old Hollywood romance.”
“The 1926 La Valencia Hotel is a pink-hued, Spanish-tiled San Diego historic landmark terraced into the hills of the seaside enclave of La Jolla, a worthy beachfront alternative to Hotel del Coronado during its renovation.”
“This luxury hotel overlooking La Jolla Cove has been a local landmark since its debut in 1926. A Mediterranean-style beauty framed by lush bougainvillea and palm trees, The Pink Lady enchants visitors with its old-world elegance and stunning ocean vistas.”

Just Ok. One night was more than enough.
The location
The smell of the rooms and hotel, the loud AC, The staff (waiters) not really friendly, the room wasn’t really super clean, insects in the bathroom, broken window lock, hotel is very old and needs some renovation, tv was not even center to bed but rather on the side not convenient at all, they charged health care fees on bill at the restaurant….one night was really enough.

The LaValencia is truly a one of a kind and special property!
The room was comfortable and quiet. The view was spectacular and we loved where we were located in LaJolla-we walked everywhere!
I can't think of anything I didn't like.

Best value for a luxury hotel
The staff were very nice and helpful. Excellent, kind service is no longer common when traveling, but not so at La Valencia. We felt comfortable and it was indeed a good value.

Shockingly sad hotel in sad shape, needing to be closed, repiped, and renovated. Fire the kitchen.
Location. That’s about it.
Our 741 dollar suite had permanently stained furnishings, drapes hanging off their valance, noise HVAC, an entry ceiling spot that flickered all night, even when turned off - NO mirror light in the bathroom, had been removed and plated, shower dribbled warm, not hot, water - shower door guard was put on backwards, had to fix it myself. Depressing atmosphere, common stairwells badly scratched and scarred. Restaurant was pathetic, dry and tasteless, fabulously overpriced. Bed had no decoration, looked like a rehab center. Sad.

Simply A wonderful place, where we made beautiful memories.
Location, amenities, outstanding staff, we celebrated our 34th Wedding anniversary, and The La Valencia Hotel staff were instrumental in making our special occasion even more spectacular.
Wish pool had been heated!

Location was great but physical property is very rundown and barely functioning.
