Belmond Copacabana Palace Hotel, Rio de Janeiro

Av. Atlântica, 1702 - Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro - RJ, 22021-001, Brazil (show on map)

Expert reviews

New York Times review:

“A piece of Old World elegance amid the allure — and menace — of Copacabana Beach, the Palace, with 232 rooms, completed an extensive renovation late 2012. It promotes itself as a modern property that still conjures the glamour of the days when Marlene Dietrich and Orson Welles were guests.”

CNN review:

“Like a glistening casino in Monte Carlo, the massive white edifice of the Copacabana Palace looms above the beach strip of Avenida Atlantica. The most storied hotel in Rio, the Copacabana opened its doors in 1923 as a roost for dignitaries and diplomats. This best of Rio hotel still brings in the royals and their modern counterparts — rock stars.”

Lonely Planet review:

“Rio’s most famous hotel has hosted heads of state, rock stars and other prominent personalities – Queen Elizabeth once stayed here, as did the Rolling Stones. The dazzling white facade dates from the 1920s, when it became a symbol of the city.”

Forbes review:

“While a long list of A-list celebrities such as Marlene Dietrich, Princess Diana and Robert De Niro have graced the white marble interiors of the glamorous Copacabana Palace, A Belmond Hotel, Rio de Janeiro, the hotel itself is also a star. It appeared in the film Flying Down to Rio, in which Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire danced across the ballroom floor.”

Fodors review:

“Built in 1923 for the visiting king of Belgium and inspired by Nice’s Negresco and Cannes’s Carlton, Copacabana Palace was the first luxury hotel in South America, and it’s still one of the top hotels on the continent.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Rio De Janeiro.

Telegraph review:

“The Palace may have been lording it over Copacabana for nearly a century, but it is a rare example of how to grow old gracefully in this anything-goes beach neighbourhood. From its stunning pool and excellent restaurants to the rooftop tennis court, everything about the hotel has been designed with the guest in mind.”

Classic icon of Copacana Beach

It is a stunning classic hotel - its reputation of service is second to none. Some parts of the grand building are tired but it is 100 years old.

The location is a bit overrated !

The best of the best. Belmond Copacabana Palace is the pkace to stay in Rio.

It’s super luxurious, immaculate and centrally located. The rooms are well appointed. The air conditioning is first rate - very important in a hot tropical climate. The staff are amazing. They cluck over you.

A wonderful stay and it was not the last.

Everything. A perfect place to stay. Room, pool, restaurants and bar and above all, extremely dedicated and friendly employees.

Just a suggestion. The snacks at the pool when having a drink could be more varied.

Not great for young people.

Historic beautiful building. Service impeccable, we got welcome gifts of a bottle of sparkling wine and local snacks. The room was comfortable with housekeeping twice a day. Pool is perfect for lounging.

The hotel was very crowded, and the location wasn’t exactly beachfront. The beach is across a busy street, and copacabana beach itself is not that nice. Ipanema is much trendier and as a young couple we wish we’d stayed there instead. Also we thought staying in the hotel meant some privileged beach access - not at all. There is a tent that provides chairs and towels but you are closer to the roads than to the sea. Many visitors come to the hotel too and being hotel guests doesn’t give you any priority in terms of hotel restaurant booking. If i could do this again i’d stay in Ipanema and just come to this hotel for the restaurants.

A hotel experience to celebrate my birthday that is etched in my memory. What a lovely hotel!

I loved everything about the hotel, the amazing facilities as well the kind and professional staff. What a beautiful & well managed hotel with a gorgeous lemony scent throughout the common areas. The bedding & the soft bath towels made our experience so dreamy. Furthermore, I’m yet to stay at a hotel as generous at The Copa, we were showered with so many gifts and treats that we had to buy a small suitcase to take some of it home. I’m so thankful that the team went an extra mile to make my birthday special with a delicious chocolate cake. Lastly, we were lucky enough to check-in in time to catch the Feijoada lunch & entertainment- it was a glorious start to our stay.

The beach across it isn’t the best but we overlooked it as we had spent some time at another beach on the other side of Rio.

Was and is an experience that has to be ticked off. Overall a 8/10 for me.

Hi personally I preferred staying at Ipenema beach at the Fasano but the copacabana palace is a iconic property and the rooms are very spacious and the restaurants are nice at this hotel.

They were extremely busy and unable to respond back on time, they are over priced for the service they offer. Copa Cabana beach is not as trendy as Ipenema so the hotel and area is hanging on to old legacy

Old-style, sophisticated luxury

Staying at the Copacabana Palace is a very special experience. The building is beautiful and one of the gems in Rio's crown. The service is fantastic, with friendly and helpful people ready to assist at all times, and great attention to detail. The rooms and suites are beautiful - understated, sophisticated luxury at its best - and it is very well worth choosing a room with an ocean view. The balcony doors in these rooms open, which is great - it allows guests to experience the sea air, sunshine and carioca life, rather than the sterile air-conditioned-only environments of so many luxury hotels. The history and the traditions of the hotel are carefully maintained, while every modern convenience is on offer. The bathrooms are wonderful, and stocked plentifully with Rio's famous Granado products. The food is exceptional too, from the breakfast buffet through to restaurant dining in the evening.

Two issues let the Copacabana Palace down. The first is the pool area, which used to be an oasis of calm - and is still described as such. It is, however, much too small for the size of the hotel, resulting now in sun loungers closely packed, side by side and three rows deep, and at the weekend there was loud music more suitable to a 1980s remix Ibiza beach party, rather than one of the great hotels of the world. The other missing feature is a proper bar - the hotel needs a quiet place where guests can have a drink before or after dinner, or meet friends. The only option currently is the pool area, where there is very limited seating unless you are eating, or want to sit on a sun lounger.

Amazing hotel and holds up to it's image!

The hotel has immense charm and the overall style and aesthetic really add to the Copa Cabana experience. Staff is excellent and friendly( Do get them a more efficient coffee maker though). Great gym, beautiful Spa and the breakfast service is of great quality and selection.

As the building is older, less sockets and no USB connections available, which is slightly challenging for the business traveller, but inherent to buildings of this age.

Wonderful place!

Staff & service, Everything perfect except comment below.......

Problems with final payment as we were charged for taxi services when we had paid the drivers in cash. This took a long time to resolve but fortunately we had the time to resolve before leaving for the airport. Then after we left the hotel we were charged again by Visa without agreement. Again took a long time to resolve.

It was an oasis in the middle of town

Very elegant. A piece of history in the middle of the city.

I think that some of the common areas need some modern touch and improvement. Better ac in halls. Their hall of fame is also a little sad. It is such a famous hotel it could do much better than that.

I really enjoied

I really liked the Breakfast. It's a shame we cannot see the sea from there. But I understand privacy its important for security in Rio. I liked the room because it reminded me of home ... its cozy.

I just learned there was a picture exposition in the hotel when we were already in the cab , leaving for the airport. I Think you should give more information about the hotel and Rio when the guests arrive.

Amazing, relaxing, and such a great stay!

I loved staying at the Copacabana and would recommend it to anyone looking to travel to Rio. The majority of the staff were so helpful and accommodating and made our stay absolutely amazing. It felt like five star service and we really enjoyed the breakfast and our tasting menu meal at Mee. I hope to go back one day!

Some of the staff around the pool was not as helpful as the rest, but overall had a great time and would go back again.
