The location is amazing. Very peaceful and beautiful. The staff is very nice and always ready to help you. The rooms are very big and the view from the windows is breathtaking. The breakfast is very good.

An indescribable experience — one we’ll definitely repeat again and again. It truly felt like a journey through time, beginning in the 18th century and beautifully colliding with the present day. Everything was wonderful from start to finish. We were warmly welcomed at reception by Inês, whose incredible smile, good mood, friendliness, and charisma immediately made us feel at home. Fábio kindly introduced us to the hotel layout and personally accompanied us to our room, which was a lovely touch. Another special highlight was the guided tour of the hotel led by Inês — rich in history, art, and fascinating details — ending with a delightful courtesy tasting of Port wines, cheese, and other treats. That’s where we met Mariana, who served us, explained everything so attentively, and completely charmed us. We ended up having lunch at the hotel restaurant, enjoying an incredible view over the Douro River, with the fantastic and highly professional Mariana once again taking great care of us as our waitress. In short, absolutely nothing negative to mention. That’s precisely why we’re eager to return for more experiences in this paradise — a place that is far more than just a hotel; it’s truly a journey through time. Thank you all for making us feel at home and for the thoughtful birthday surprise. It was undoubtedly the perfect accommodation choice for such a special day.

The only aspect that didn’t quite meet our expectations was the food. Perhaps it was just bad luck, or maybe we didn’t choose the best options. We both ordered the Parmesan cheeseburger and, unfortunately, both arrived cold. It was still perfectly edible, but the flavour didn’t particularly surprise or impress us. Even the desserts we tried didn’t fully win us over. Overall, we felt that the price–quality balance could be better aligned and might benefit from some improvement. That said, we genuinely don’t want to be unfair to the kitchen, and we hope that on a future visit we’ll have a different and more positive experience with this service. What truly made up for it was Mariana — extremely professional, friendly, and attentive throughout. The cocktails she served were excellent and absolutely delicious. Thank you, Mariana, for the outstanding five-star service.

The location was excellent, the room was comfortable and well kept, and the staff were outstanding. A special mention to Gonçalo, who was extremely professional and took the time to explain everything clearly. His friendliness and attention really made a difference in our stay. Highly recommended.

We stayed here in December. My wife and I. The palace stands by the river. Solid. Quiet. Old in the right way. It carries its history without showing off. The room was good. Comfortable. Clean. Everything you needed and nothing extra. At night there was silence, the kind that lets you sleep well. The staff were steady and kind. The bell boys handled the luggage with ease and respect. The driver was punctual, calm, and professional. No unnecessary words. Just good service done properly. Breakfast was taken slowly. Fresh bread. Strong coffee. Soft winter light coming through tall windows. December suited the place. Fewer people. Cooler air. A sense of calm that felt honest. For what it offers — history, location, service, and atmosphere — it is very good value for money. You are not paying for noise or fashion, but for substance. For a place that has lasted and knows who it is. We left satisfied. We would go back.

A quiet and peaceful part of Porto, just a short 4-euro Uber ride from the city center—an absolute bargain. The service and hospitality were excellent, making the stay feel warm and welcoming. The beds were exceptionally comfortable, with a thoughtful choice of pillow types to suit different preferences. Breakfast was outstanding, offering a generous selection of both hot and continental options to start the day perfectly.

The room was comfortable overall, but the lighting was too dim and yellow, which made the space feel darker than expected. Additionally, the bathroom lacked an extractor fan, causing it to steam up after a bath and even trigger the emergency alarm a few times—something that could definitely be improved for a smoother stay.

The property is stunning, making the most of an elegant old palace with beautiful characterful reception rooms, restaurant and bar. The character of the building has been kept with sensitively added modern facilities and a lovely spa with decent sized pools. We received a warm, friendly welcome, smooth check in and nothing was too much trouble. extra touches added to the superb experience. It is located right on the banks of the river Douro with great views.

More teabags in the room?! Especially English breakfast! We could have asked but we forgot. That's all.

Its a big space and mostly empty, so it took a minute to figure out how to change elevators to get to my room, not very straight forward, but we eventually managed it. Otherwise, great place

We have been many times in Porto — mainly staying in the center— so we decided to try a new area outside of Porto. Have to say that it resulted in a great experience. What we like the most was the tranquility of the place and its beautiful surroundings, the historic building made as feel like we were in a different époque. The size of the corner room and its views over the river Douro. The delicious breakfast that had it all. The restaurant that was always available and the service provided by the staff which handle all of our requests at all times satisfactory. We’ll visit this place again.

Even though approximately 3 km outside Porto it was a lovely walk beside the river. Lovely to come home to away from the bustle of the city.

The service at check in with Raphael and Jai being so attentive and helpful was exceptional. Polite and very helpful staff throughout. The facilities are first class and the breakfast is the best. This is my third visit to this pestana hotel and it gets better and better. Thank you to all those who make our stay so welcoming. The pools are top notch and the steam room and sauna are first rate. I cannot fault my visits. Although a short drive to the centre of Porto the location for me was ideal.

More sunloungers - both volume & comfort! Poor poolbar service. Very slow & on one occasion didn’t serve the order with little to no attempt to locate us (we were sat right next to pool & the poolside is not big!)

The Palace is lovely, as are the gardens, with amazing river views. We enjoyed the excellent breakfast as well as a quick lunch at the bar. Most rooms, however, are in another building (next to the palace). The bed was very good and we also appreciated the choice of pillows and the tea/coffee in the room.

The building where rooms are located is somewhat gloomy (very dimly lit at all hours) and our room, which was a junior suite, was very large and sparsely decorated, therefore it didn't feel cozy. Also, the view was not good. For the price, we expected it to be nicer. The location of the palace itself is beautiful, but if you are coming to visit Porto proper, do note that it is rather far from the center, in a semi-industrial area.

My loving partner and I stayed at Pestana Palácio do Freixo, Porto, and it was nothing short of magical. The palace is absolutely stunning — full of history, elegance, and charm — and everywhere you look feels picture-perfect. Our room was luxurious and comfortable, with views that took our breath away, especially over the Douro River. The atmosphere was serene and romantic, making it the perfect place for us to relax and enjoy time together. The staff were so attentive and welcoming, adding to the feeling of being truly cared for. This beautiful hotel gave us memories we’ll treasure forever, and we cannot wait to return.

I loved my stay at Hotel Pestana Palácio do Freixo with my family. Everything was so easy and stress-free. The spa area and pool are absolutely fabulous, and the breakfast is fantastic with plenty of choice. Although the hotel isn’t within walking distance to the main area, Ubers are very cheap and easy to use, so getting around was no problem. I would highly recommend this hotel for a relaxing and memorable stay.

A lot of character grandness feels like you are living in a palace. Can not be reproduced by any other 5 star hotel. If you wish a life time memorable trip this is it.

Service at bars and restaurants was sub par. At pool area they never came to clean up after delivering food. Clearly not working for tips causes poor service.

The hotel is beautiful and the views were amazing! The bed was huge which is always a bonus. Our room was made up every day. The staff were lovely, pool was clean and quiet and food was decent. We even got a little welcome gift (small bottle of red wine and some sweet treats) upon arrival which was waiting for us in the room. The hotel is about a 45 min walk along the river from the centre, but it's such a lovely walk. I would recommend doing it at least once! Most of days we took Ubers which were very accessible and SO CHEAP! We would definitely come back here.

We booked the Grand View room with extra bed, however be aware that on the pictures on booking.com it shows that the room has balcony, but our room did not have one. It also didn't have an extra bed, even though we booked extra bed, but they immediately put it in after we pointed it out. They even offered to move us to a room with balcony half way through our stay but we were not bothered moving all of our stuff just for a couple of days. Sometimes you had to queue to get into breakfast, so it's better to go there before 10AM if you want to avoid waiting. Except for that we couldn't complain.
