The Heathman Hotel, Portland
The Heathman Hotel is a true Portland icon, standing as a proud member of the National Historic Register since 1927. Originally designed by the architectural firm DeYoung and Roald in a sophisticated Jacobean Revival style, the building has served as a cultural anchor for decades. It is widely celebrated for its deep-rooted connection to the arts, boasting a vast collection of original works and a legendary library featuring thousands of volumes signed by visiting authors.
The hotel’s interior is a masterclass in blending history with modern refinement. Guests are often charmed by the grand tea court, which features a 100-year-old Austrian crystal chandelier, and the subtle, quirky details like the exposed concrete columns in the dining area—complete with 1920s-era chalk marks. Even the bronze sculpture of Zelda, an English bulldog in a Beefeater costume who guards the entrance, adds a unique and playful touch to the historic property.
Its location in the heart of the Cultural District makes it an ideal base for exploring Portland. You are just steps away from the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and the Portland Art Museum. For book lovers, the world-famous Powell’s City of Books is also within easy walking distance.
Whether you are enjoying the quiet, refined atmosphere of the mezzanine library or heading out to explore the nearby performing arts venues, The Heathman remains an essential piece of Portland’s story. It is a place where classic elegance meets the creative spirit of the Pacific Northwest.

“The Heathman Hotel is one of Portland’s premier boutique hotels, and has been an icon of the city’s skyline for more than eight decades. “A historic property built in 1927 and situated in Portland’s downtown theatre district, the Heathman is known for its staid interior, costumed Beefeater doormen and as a setting in the bestselling erotic novel 50 Shades of Grey. Like old money, it’s grand but never flashy.”

over all very helpful staff.
The room was spacious and it was great to have a mini bar available if needed. Also nice to have a lounge.
The bartender was so busy we had to wait for cocktails quite often... maybe add more staff?

We had an enjoyable overnight stay in downtown Portland.
The location was perfect because we were attending a concert next door at the Schnitz. The room was nice, but small, the bed was comfortable. The products in the bathroom were great.
At first we thought the coffee press was nice, but it was kind of a pain. Having a K-cup type unit would be more useful. The rain shower head was nice but did not have enough pressure so trying to clean all the shampoo out of your hair was difficult. The refrigerator was not great. The door was off and it appeared to be more of an "appearance" unit rather than a working unit. The bartenders were overworked and it reflected their attitude towards guests. The servers were much more friendly.

boutique, convenient, relaxing
The location is great to the downtown area. I was in town for a conference at the Hilton and it was a designated overflow hotel. It was steps away from the conference. This hotel is more on the boutique side of lodgings. The room was well appointed, the bathroom and the dressing are were a different experience, but unique. The library is a beautiful space that is conducive for relaxing or getting work done. The restaurant faces the street and is convenient after a long day of conferencing. The adjacent chocolate shop is a bonus - the hot chocolate is fantastic!
There didn't seem to be a ramp for luggage or for folks for whom stairs are challenging (arthritic knees and ankles). There was a small service lift (?) that was not very clear how to use. No one offered to help or to offer the use of the lift.

We enjoyed the hotel and the staff were very helpful and friendly.
The location was perfect and very central to where we needed to be. The corner room was perfect for a week long stay.
The cupboard space was rather limited for a long stay and its location in the bathroom was not ideal. The associated bar tavern and grill closed too early and I twice ended up going across to the Hilton for a drink in their bar.

Love the hotel, the amenities, the staff at the front desk/restaurant. Will stay again.
Love the location and close proximity to the tram. Enjoyed having a quick bite to eat the evening we came in without having to leave the hotel.
This is the second time I've stayed at The Heathman. This time we were in a noisy room (810) noise from outside and could hear folks in other rooms. It was enough that it woke us up several times. This wasn't the case the last time I was here.

Great place to stay
Clean, quiet and beautiful
Just an observation: $2 off an $18 drink doesn’t sound like a happy hour to me.

Gorgeous hotel and great service
The staff were all so welcoming and helpful. Location is in an excellent spot, away from the homeless shelters and plenty of shops and restaurants within a 5-10 min walk from the hotel. It was peaceful despite being on a busy road. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated. The room even included toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, toothpaste, and a small vanity kit.
This is being super picky now, but we would have loved if they also included slippers but it was no big deal that they didn't.

Bring earplugs or noise cancelling headphones
We liked the design of the hotel
I could barely sleep due to the noise in the room, it was from a loud ventilation system and an intense hum, I forgot my noise cancelling headphones. Parking was also a pain

Good Hotel, Great Staff - will gladly come back.
The staff changed us rooms when we found out ours was next to the ice machine. We're light sleepers, it matters and the staff was super understanding about that. The rental bikes were cool and useful to get a tour around the willamette. The beds and robes were super comfy and we really enjoyed the gym. Breakfast is also really good and rapidly brought to the table.
More coffee offered than herbal teas but this is something quite specific so it should not matter here.

Great hotel with lovely staff
Staff were lovely and the room was fabulous. Huge room with great AC, spacious bathroom and huge comfy bed. Nice bars and restaurants around.
The Valet is $65 a night which when you're already paying so much for a room seems extremely steep. I wouldn't stay again if we're driving but without a vehicle it's worth it.

Comfortable downtown location
Comfortable beds. Walking distance to bars and restaurants and grocery store.
Expensive parking. On site bar closed too early.

Pleasant, comfortable and quiet.
Coffee was good. Decent menu. Friendly wait staff.
Greasy - I had the corned beef hash and the brisket beef was gristly. The potatoes and seasonal veg sautéed in too much oil for my personal taste.

Can't wait to come and visit again!
The valet staff was very friendly. The hotel cards with book quotes was a lovely touch. I loved using a bike to see the waterfront and that a concert next door was easy to do, too! It was a great first visit to Portland.
I wish I had a view out the window

Beautiful downtown Portland hotel with charm and great customer service
Beautiful hotel in downtown Portland. Each room has tons of character and the beds very comfortable (on the firm side, not soft). Asked for an extra comforter when I made the reservation, and it was waiting in the room when we arrived. Staff are very attentive, and THEY PAY ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS! Check out time is 12pm, which is nice because it gives you time to explore the city a little longer if you like. Breakfast was great at hotel restaurant. Hotel allowed us to keep our bags at the hotel during the day after we checked out while we explored Portland before our train left. We will definitely stay here again. DO NOT HESITATE TO STAY HERE!
Water pressure was low, but was not a deal breaker. We traveled on a Tuesday night and restaurant/bar was closed (closes at 9pm on Monday/Tuesday)by the time we arrived, so no room service after a long day of travel so that sucked.

Perfect spot to explore Portland
Great location.Wonderful, spacious room with comfortable beds. The library was such a fun unique space. The happy hour in the restaurant was great.
Our room was not cleaned. We ordered room service and it never came.

Beautifully renovated historic hotel in a great location
We were looking for a well-priced, dog friendly hotel in downtown Portland although we don't usually travel with our dog. The Heathman exceeded our expectations. The reception staff were very caring about our dog's comfort and immediately suggested a water bowl for her. Our room was spacious and well-appointed, with a fresh coffee press and a very comfortable bed. There is a wonderfully inviting, lounge area with books that one can borrow and would actually like read, as well as board and card games for all ages and interests and comfortable club chairs and tables. A very inviting space.
The location is fantastic, close to theaters and the concert hall and within walking distance of excellent restaurants and coffeshops. The restauarant is excellent both for dinner and breakfast. Better yet, there is a park within a block where we could walk the dog.
