Lonely Planet review:

“This pretty hotel in the historic 1881 Mariners Building – originally a lodging house for sailors  has impeccable fashion sense. Options include dorms as well as private rooms. There’s a lively bar and rooftop deck, plus Wednesday wine tastings and drag bingo on Thursday. Some corner rooms have huge windows designed to catch sunlight.”

Fodors review:

“This intimate new boutique hotel with simple, stylish, and affordable rooms just steps from Old Town nightlife and Lan Su Chinese Garden occupies an 1880s former boardinghouse for sailors and retains a quirky and colorful atmosphere.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Portland.

Frommers review:

“This is the best hotel deal in Portland and a place where you can enjoy a memorable stay in the heart of the city for a fraction of what you’d pay at a fancier hotel a few blocks away. Located in still-gritty Old Town/Chinatown, The Society Hotel occupies a late-19th-century building that was originally a hotel for sailors and later used as a Chinese dance hall.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Portland.

Perfect for my quick overnight

Short walk from train station. Restaurants nearby. Nice rooftop, even if not the weather for it. Shared bathroom was very close (no wandering). Helpful staff.

Unhoused folks making noise on the street. Not the hotel's fault, our society is broken.

Fabulous

The room is simple, but neat and clean and has everything you need. I didn't try their breakfast, but instead got a good recommendation from the receptionist for a place within walking distance. I really loved the old newspaper clippings in the stair well. Fantastic!

Cozy and clean place to stay while in Portland

The check-in process was easy. The place was clean and quiet. The place had lockers, but bring your own lock. The bed was comfortable with a down comforter. It had a common kitchen with a refrigerator that was kept clean. The bathrooms had hot showers and shampoo included, so I was happy with the overall experience. They let you store your luggage after you check out. It is two blocks from the light rail station.

The neighborhood has vagrants roaming around without purpose and setting up tents on the sidewalk.

Very good

Location was perfect for where we were going. Right across the street and within walking distance. Staff was always kind and helpful.

Rooms are on the small size, but comfortable.

No bathroom in the room

A small cafe downstairs is very cute, although a little pricey. Very convenient to eat there or to work on my laptop.

I didn't realize there was no bathroom in the room! It was not clear in the description. So I had to walk down the hall to use the bathroom, or to take a shower. Also, there were very few surfaces in the room - almost none, no shelves or tables, so I had to put my stuff on the floor. Also, I realized that this hotel was cheaper than average, also because of the location - there is a large homeless population living in the neighborhood, so I didn't feel very safe walking alone in the evening, and ended up taking an Uber every night.

Feeling recharged after a night here

Great service and extremely clean and tidy shared bathrooms. Bedrooms were great, we had the choice between a view and quiet. Chose the latter and it was an excellent nights sleep.

Located in an area filled with homeless. Hotel can’t do anything about it but it felt a bit unsafe. Not sure if it is always like that though.

Very hipster and cool hotel with an inspiring history

Amazing, super nice architecture, Comfy rooms, everything clean and nice, cool rooftop. One of the nicest hotels I’ve seen!

China town is probably not the best neighbourhood in Portland, but I think the hotel has good security measures, and the fact that good businesses open in the area will help to become a good neighbourhood!

Excellent stay for the price. I highly recommend for those on a budget.

Location, Friendly Staff, Price, Cafe in Lobby, Cleanliness.

I couldn't use the roof facilities..... because it was raining ;-)

It's a good clean stay for a reasonable price

Straight into the old city center. It makes it easy to go to a cafe or to a restaurant which is at walking distance. Travel with the metro was easy because a stop is nearby. You are also on walking distance of the trainstation which i used. Hotel itself has a nice staff which is friendly and helpful. Don't forget to visit the roof :-)

I think i would be nice if you could get a coffee early. Because you have to pay for it you have to wait till the reception is open which is a problem if you want to start early and need a coffee to start your day. The front doors are locked so why not (worst case) a coffee machine? I heard other customers complaining about the shared bathrooms. However, for me it never occurred they were occupied. However, a small toilet on the room would be better. A shared shower is fine for me.

Comfortable stay in Portland

Close to downtown and our activities as we attended a festival. The room did the trick and was comfortable. Staff were there 24hrs and friendly and fast check in. Chinatown has good food, Mexican late night food stalls near by.

The neighborhood was close to many homeless or low income locals. It was okay for me as I have this in my city. I didn't feel unsafe, though I just felt bad for those struggling with mental illness and drug addiction as we try and enjoy our little getaway.

Nice place - Bad surroundings

The common WC was incredibly clean, as if it was a private one. The whole accommodation is great, clean, neat

Only minus point is the environment. The whole city centre of Portland seems to be abandonned and full of drug addicts on the street. Not a very nice view. I did not feel unsafe but, still, not something I am looking for to see

Would stay here again

It was centrally located and east to find. Having a coffee bar was also a plus.

The walls are thin but it is an old building

Cute hotel in central location

Modern boutique hotel, with great roof terrace and good cafe.

The rooms were small and so felt more like a hostel than a hotel. The downtown location was central to everything we wanted to see and do, but not everyone will feel safe.

Nice, clean, secure, place to stay with an old town vibe.

Safe, Secure, and Clean. Staff were always available and really knowledgeable and helpful. Bed was comfy, sheets were clean. Lots of pillows on the bed was nice. A robe for my shower was sweet. Not too noisy.

Alot of open drug use on the streets and homelessness but I didn't feel at risk or in danger from anyone. It's just the ugly side of life and unfortunately reflects badly on Portland and the hotel. Wish I could help those people more.

Next time I’m in Portland, I plan to stay again!

The staff were excellent, courteous, and helpful. I like that there is a cafe in the lobby, which made a great space for when I needed to do a bit of work at a table. Good accessible location with easy access to transit and also very walkable in a historic neighborhood. I also liked the fan in the room! I usually need some white noise to help me sleep, and I found having it going at night also helped to drown out sounds from neighboring rooms as well as street noise.

An overall amazing trip to portland.

The property was adorable, comfortable, and clean.

The location was rough, and a bit scary at times.

Awesome staff and amazing customer service.

I love the rooftop terrace. We loved the little coffee shop when you walk in, and we loved the fire and seating by the coffee shop too

Location is a little sketchy. Downtown Portland isn’t the best area and there were tons of homeless people on drugs being wackos in the streets.

Great stay at Society Hotel and will come stay again soon.

Inside is spectacular and the rooftop was my fave part. Great views of the city.

Mainly the location but can’t complain with how affordable it was.

A lovely hotel, but not in a good location.

The hotel was cute and the staff was super friendly. The rooms were small, but the bathrooms were very clean and nice.

The location was not good. It was so unfortunate because the hotel is nice and a good value.

An affordable and convenient place to stay, with added perks.

The café downstairs is great for morning breakfast, food and drink both were timely and hand-done. Taking coffee up to the rooftop patio space offered views and atmosphere. The location of the hotel is also within comfortable walking distance of venues, shopping, and places to eat.

The mattress in the room had a depression on the edge that made it feel as if you were about to roll off if you got too close to the side. That said, it probably was a one-off that can be easily fixed.

Comfortable central location

The property had a beautiful cafe with great coffee and the staff were amazing. The bed was comfortable and the facilities very clean given they were shared.

Room sizes are small and unfortunately the local neighbourhood is rife with homelessness and drug use so probably not a family friendly area to stay.
