Expert reviews

Lonely Planet review:

“This pretty hotel in the historic 1881 Mariners Building – originally a lodging house for sailors  has impeccable fashion sense. Options include dorms as well as private rooms. There’s a lively bar and rooftop deck, plus Wednesday wine tastings and drag bingo on Thursday. Some corner rooms have huge windows designed to catch sunlight.”

Fodors review:

“This intimate new boutique hotel with simple, stylish, and affordable rooms just steps from Old Town nightlife and Lan Su Chinese Garden occupies an 1880s former boardinghouse for sailors and retains a quirky and colorful atmosphere.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Portland.

Frommers review:

“This is the best hotel deal in Portland and a place where you can enjoy a memorable stay in the heart of the city for a fraction of what you’d pay at a fancier hotel a few blocks away. Located in still-gritty Old Town/Chinatown, The Society Hotel occupies a late-19th-century building that was originally a hotel for sailors and later used as a Chinese dance hall.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Portland.

Great location and good value in the budget category.

Great location, attentive staff.

The property could use a little bit of an update. Needs a few things to make guests more comfortable/convenient like bathroom shelf, clothing hooks, etc. A small flatscreen would be nice for people who are traveling on business.

Modern, vibrant and beautiful hotel with a rooftop and super friendly stuff. Totally recommended.

A modern and vibrant hotel. Texting messages and responding immediately if you need something. The stuff is so friendly and relaxed. The rooftop is exceptional. The hotel is perfect to get to know new people. But even as a family we felt welcome. Good security.

The hotel is central situated but the surrounding area is a mess. We saw drug abuse on the open street. Needles laying around. There are homeless and crazy people everywhere. The parking space is a block away and I wouldn’t recommend a women go even this short way alone after dark. My wife lived near Portland 10 years ago and was so shocked how it has changed.

Excellent

I really liked the price. I really liked the location, The rooftop bar was great and the cleanliness of everything was spot on.

The rooftop party 1 floor up ran a bit late.

Nice place but bad location

Beautiful building & room, clean, friendly staff and nice rooftop.

The location… The hotel is in Chinatown which used to be a nice neighbourhood. Now, there are only homeless and junkies in the street and most of the shops have closed. This is really sad. And I didn’t feel very comfortable, especially while travelling with a kid.

Very good

Great price, nice rooftop.

Room was very basic, location not in great area of town. However, it's priced very fairly given these reasons.

Pleasant

So much to like but the roof top sitting area was awesome!

Getting yelled at by the homeless and witnessing several folks urinating on the sidewalk outside the hotel.

Overall a great place and I loved the thoughtful amenities, appliances, etc.

I loved the eco-conscious amenities, the cafe, the aesthetic, the price, and the staff.

Unfortunately, I went to take a shower and there was poop in it.

Amazing! Just be aware of your surroundings

The hotel itself is really cute, clean and comfortable, even the shared bathroom is really clean. The staff is also very friendly and the environment is great 10/10! Is also close to the train station and a lot of attractions of Portland.

The location is kinda sketchy, the streets around unfortunately have a lot of homeless people, so it becomes complicated to go in and out specially if you are by yourself.

Could’ve been better

The bed was nice

There was a parade located in from of my room and I asked for a quiet place so I could sleep , and my room was right in front of it. So there was loud music until very late at night and I couldn’t sleep

Pleasant, convenient and welcoming.

The staff were super friendly. The coffee and food hit the spot. The café/bar/lounge area is comfortable and welcoming. The bed was comfortable and clean, and the bathrooms are very clean.

The room was considerably smaller than the impression I got from the images.

We plan to stay again!

We loved the hotel! Very clean and we felt safe!

Both of us were too warm during the night and there was no way to cool off.

Not bad, but I would not recommend it.

The staff was amazing! Also, the hotel hosted a very good event at their rooftop.

This hotel is located in the scariest area of Portland. It is not very safe.

A very pleasant place to stay, with some things to be aware of

The staff were incredibly friendly and professional, and the rooms were really comfortable places to be. I especially would recommend the king suite with the sofa bed for big groups like mine was :] The location is great in terms of proximity to many great places, most of our trip we traveled by foot The amenities outside of the rooms like the ground floor cafe and rooftop space were a very welcome addition which really makes the hotel, the community spaces were excellent

The area directly outside the hotel was preeettyy sketch at times, the hotel is very secure though, but the mile radius around the hotel has hit less than stellar times. I wouldn't recommend spending too much time wandering the immediate area alone. It seems the city overall is still understandably on the mend, so improvement is coming, eventually. The smaller rooms might be a bit too small in comparison to the king suite, many of them are listed as being able to house 2 guests, but I would add that might only apply to couples, who like to travel lighter, as it's a bit too intimate than most single people would be comfortable with.

Fabulous

Beautifully restored, hip but not pretentious, friendly and accommodating staff. Great cafe downstairs and a killer rooftop deck. I’ll definitely be back.

Very pleasant, amazing stuff

The stuff is amazing. Everyone is so welcoming, nice and helpful. The rooms are clean and very well designed.

The rooms are quite small but that's okay considering the price. The location isn't great, there are many homeless people just outside of the building, which is fine but sometimes can be unpredictable and could feel a bit unsafe.

Hotel itself spectacular, right outside the hotel not so much

The property & staff itself is outstanding - everything is clean, well kept, & well priced. They have a cute coffee & food & alcoholic beverage bar on the main floor and a rooftop lounge area. It’s all & all very great.

The location isn’t bad, what makes it bad is the amount of homeless people surrounding it. We were afraid to leave our car by itself while unloading & every 5 steps you take there’s a different homeless tent or person. It’s unfortunate because there’s nothing the hotel can do about it but it makes the property way less appealing. It also smells like straight up pee when you walk outside.

Good but probably not again.

Clean and comfortable bed. Shared bathroom room and shower area clean available.

Old Town just smells like a urine factory. Rooms are really small with not chair dresser or rack for clothes. Bed sits high so a pain to put your shoes on.

Cute hotel in a dilapidated neighborhood

The amenities within the hotel are fantastic, especially the roof.

The location, although close to the MAX, leaves a lot to be desired.

I had a great time and hope to stay here again at some point.

Great location, beautiful design, tidy and nicely minimalist rooms, helpful staff.

Mostly just how cold the room was, though the front desk was obviously keen to help if needed.

Great stay at an interesting, safe hotel with a terrific staff.

Breakfast/coffee were really great. All staff were nice and very helpful….both in person and on the phone before we arrived. Really appreciated the secure, reasonably priced parking. And the rooftop patio is awesome even on a drizzly day. Perfect spot to stay when seeing a concert at Roseland Theater.

Hotel & parking felt very secure, but the surrounding neighborhood is definitely rough. Bummer to see downtown/old town so empty.

Definitely coming to stay again! Loved my getaway trip there and I’m excited to come back again for even more fun!

Hotel and the history that they kept with it was beautiful, not to mention the staff was amazing. Super friendly and accommodating to all needs. Loved the rooftop and the late cafe hours!

Great location at a very good value

Awesome location in downtown. Room was fantastic with a high ceiling and very clean. The rooftop was a great place to hang and the staff was very friendly upon arrival. Many reviews complained about the presence of people experiencing homelessness near the hotel - if this is a problem for you, maybe Portland isn't the city for you.
