Expert reviews

Frommers review:

“It’s full of winding, tree-covered paths, arches, narrow walkways, gardens, and antique fountains, creating the tranquil feel of a Mediterranean monastery. The denseness landscaping belies its relatively small footprint on Camelback Road in Arcadia.”

Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Phoenix.

Fodors review:

“Once the home of Cunard Steamship executive Delos T. Cooke, this Mediterranean-style resort has a stately row of the namesake palms at its entrance, courtyards with fountains, and individually designed rooms.”

Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Phoenix.

Forbes review:

“Intimate and tranquil, Royal Palms Resort and Spa is a boutique hideaway with quiet pathways, lush gardens, acclaimed cuisine, elegantly appointed guest rooms, villas and casitas, and a storied tradition for providing an exceptional welcome to all guests of this romantic and cozy retreat colored in a golden patina at the base of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix.”

Telegraph review:

“This storied resort was built in 1929 by shipping tycoon Delos Cooke as a winter haven for his ailing wife. The intimate mediterranean-style hotel, set on nine acres of former citrus groves, features romantic outdoor nooks with fireplaces and fountains amid profuse gardens of plants and trees.”

Tranquil charming oasis in the Paradise Valley!

Facility is beautiful, well kept, with considerable charm. All of the staff members were very kind, warm and courteous. The hotel has a very 'personal' touch and does not feel as cold/corporate as big hotel chains are. We had some problems with our stay that the staff made considerable efforts to remedying and although initial impulses were not to return, that quickly changed when they demonstrated how dedicated they were to making our stay the best it could be and being very fair at remedying the situation. I would definitely stay here again. Special appreciation for Anna, assistant director.

The prices at the restaurant are considerably over-inflated. The food is good and the ambiance is stunning, but if the prices at the restaurant were more appropriate/realistic, we would have chosen to eat there more regularly. Also, given the fact that this hotel is geared towards a spa experience, and that it is also not adult-only, would recommend that it should have some things geared towards children, at least to some small degree. Many other hotels in the area have periodic activities that are child oriented and there could be a small addition of that since the hotel is not adult-only.

Exceptional

Beautiful, luxurious resort that impresses from the moment you drive up. The Arcadia Villa was huge, super comfortable, and felt like basically renting a whole residence without a kitchen. Staff, other than the person who first checked us in, was very friendly and helpful.

Not sure if we just couldn’t figure it out but didn’t seem like they had smart TV setups. Would’ve been amazing to cuddle and watch our favorite shows by the fireplace. Also, would’ve liked to have had a microwave in the room in addition to a mini fridge.

Better than expected 65th Birthday!

My first massage ever, with Lisa, was amazing! Happy Hour in Mix It and dinner was excellent! To top it off was the morning tour we took of the property with Danny. Love to stay in historic properties and this did not disappoint!

Fabulous

Buildings & grounds are very lovely. TCook Restaurant staff & food was great. Servers & bus staff are excellent.

We stayed in room 309 which overlooked parking lot and sounds in other rooms were noisy & and unpleasant.

Exceptional

Unbelievable property, great service and perfect location close to restaurants and bars - I look forward to go back!

The pool is beautiful but too small for the amount of guests. Usually it is open for guests only but during the weekend it gets very crowded because even people not staying at the hotel can get in.

An escape to Scottsdale

The grounds & architecture are just stunning. We loved the history of the hotel. The gal at the front desk named Sydney was very informative & even gave us a tour while walking us to our room. The complimentary glass of champagne upon our arrival after a 5 hour drive was much appreciated! We were only in town for one night but we will definitely be back!

My only complaint was we couldn’t stay longer! (Due to our schedule, no fault of the hotel.)

Fabulous

Clean, beautiful, friendly staff. Very relaxing at the pool.

At first they were confused over different last names on luggage and held half of ours at front desk upon arrival. They rectified the situation with finding and sending luggage right away and apologizing with a bottle of champagne!!!

Fellow travellers beware

The Royal Palm Hotel is a charming old style residence that sits in the back drop of Camel Back mountain. The staff were wonderful and friendly. Barbara who showed us to our room was lovely pointing out all the hotel features. And Jesse who served out breakfast on both days couldn’t have been more helpful – I’m sure he’ll go far.

Firstly as a wheelchair accessible room we were very pleased with having a 1st floor room that looked across the pool over to the mountain. As an early riser I was very much looking forward to a coffee watching the sun rise listening to the birds. Unfortunately this was not to be as three leaf blowers commenced every morning around 5.30am. This was an unpleasant morning alarm and ruined the opportunity for a quiet coffee. Then there is the case of use been bitten. After our first night we both woke to little red welts on us. My wife insisted that these were mosquito bites – I wasn’t so sure. After the second night we woke with even more bite marks and we were both scratching the itches which of course made them worse. After arriving home my wife went to the pharmacy to get some antihistamine and cream. At this point she was told they were bed bug bites. One recognisable pointer is that they have slightly brown centres and tend to track in a line which is unlike mosquito bites. To say we were not pleased is an understatement. We arrived at the Royal Palm Hotel and at no point did anyone mention a charge for parking. Not the actual valet, the reception guys when checking in and I don’t remember booking.com mentioning this either. So to be hit with a $38/night parking charge was a complete surprise. Then we had the State Occupancy Tax of 7.27% which as a tourist you quickly get used to. But it was strange to then get the City Occupancy Tax of 5.3% which we hadn’t been charged elsewhere in Phoenix. Then there was the Resort Fee which was a flat rate of $35/day. Then there was the Resort Fee State Occupancy Tax of 7.27% and then on top of this was the Resort Fee City Occupancy Tax of 5.3%. Then just in case that wasn’t enough there was the Misc Sales Tax again a flat rate of $3.27. So overall from an initial charge per night of $391 we ended up with extra charges of £129.82 per night.

Pleasant

The history wall.

The air conditioning in the room did not work at all. It was hot the entire night. The back door to our patio had a large gap and we woke up with multiple misquotes in our room + bites.

fairly nice place with old world charm , would've liked to see some updates to the property

we didn't get the breakfast... not informed at check in that was part of our stay, We definitely would have taken advantage if that was told to us. The pool and staff were excellent!!! Best part of our stay.

The pictures on the web were not what the resort looks like in person...it was much more old & run down. The room was not very clean, the fridge didn't work , another had to be wheeled in. I was with my disabled mom who needed to have her meds cool. All in all I was a little disappointed at price of the room versus what I saw online of what to expect.
