Royal Palms Resort and Spa, Phoenix
Expert reviews
“It’s full of winding, tree-covered paths, arches, narrow walkways, gardens, and antique fountains, creating the tranquil feel of a Mediterranean monastery. The denseness landscaping belies its relatively small footprint on Camelback Road in Arcadia.”
Featured as Frommer’s Exceptional Choice in Phoenix.
“Once the home of Cunard Steamship executive Delos T. Cooke, this Mediterranean-style resort has a stately row of the namesake palms at its entrance, courtyards with fountains, and individually designed rooms.”
Featured as Fodor’s Choice in Phoenix.
“Intimate and tranquil, Royal Palms Resort and Spa is a boutique hideaway with quiet pathways, lush gardens, acclaimed cuisine, elegantly appointed guest rooms, villas and casitas, and a storied tradition for providing an exceptional welcome to all guests of this romantic and cozy retreat colored in a golden patina at the base of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix.”
“This storied resort was built in 1929 by shipping tycoon Delos Cooke as a winter haven for his ailing wife. The intimate mediterranean-style hotel, set on nine acres of former citrus groves, features romantic outdoor nooks with fireplaces and fountains amid profuse gardens of plants and trees.”

Overpriced, outdated, unclean, and no way to easily communicate with the outside world unless I left
The location
The rooms were extremely outdated and in disrepair. There was no business center on site, and the Wi-Fi was extremely slow, which made it difficult to do any work from my hotel room. I also had zero cell phone service on the property the entire time I was there, so I missed a lot of calls and texts from clients and family. Bottled water was also not provided by housekeeping, and I was charged for bottles that I received from the front desk. This seemed chincy, especially in a place as hot as Arizona and at the price I paid for this supposed "luxury" hotel. Also, there was a malfunction with the room phone that caused it to keep going "off the hook" and would wake me up in the middle of the night with the beeping sound.

Wonderful experience.
We loved the hospitality from the entire staff. Rebecca, who served us our breakfast each morning, was very friendly and accomodated our requests. We also enjoyed the complimentary apple cider delivered to our room for our anniversary. Overall, a wonderful experience and we will definitely be back soon. We will recommend Royal Palms to our family and friends.

The staff was truly wonderful. We were exhausted upon arrival and the staff was so kind in bringing our things to our room, giving us water, and making sure we were comfortable. It was nice and quiet! The bathroom and shower were also marvelous.

I attempted to find different accommodations but the holiday prevented me from doing so.
The customer service was Superior and the restaurant, t-cooks was dynamic.
The hotel is advertised as a four-star hotel, which couldn't be farther from the truth. The level of neglect and the lack of care is incomprehensible to me. I will submit pictures, including a letter requesting my money back. Additionally, it was filthy, absolutely despicable. Unfortunately, this holds true for the restaurant too. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the chairs in the restaurant we're extremely wobbly, unsafe, and needed to be replaced on two separate occasions. I am saddened to report such a horrific experience. I wish I had the opportunity to read a candidate and a fourth right review. I do hope the historical landmark can start 2025 on a better note. I wish them all the best.

Great get a way
Thank you for the service and follow-up ... The check in process was very smooth and personal with an escort up to our room...much appreciated. I was able to change my 8pm T Cook dinner reservation to 7pm due to the willingness of the young lady at the T Cooks check-in which made my wife's and I evening much better. The tenderloin steak was perfect, absolutely Buenos Aires perfect...best steak I have had in the United States ... perfectly grilled to medium rare on every bite. Dinner service was personal and excellent ... Breakfast the next day again had wonderful service and quality. Our room was quiet and lovely... Only comment, if I had known prior to arrival of the 40$ valet charge, I would have used UBER or Wyamo service to and from our Phoenix home.

Very RELAXING Environment!
The resort grounds/property presented a feeling of relaxation. The food and service at property dining was top notch.
The location of the resort was not really near any other resources within walking distance.

very nice staff, good maintained, clean good food, good drinks, nice pool area. we had the room right at the street, but we told them, and right the same evening we could change the room and we even got an upgrade. that was awesome.

property is gorgeous. restaurant is amazing. rooms need updating. gym is very small and smells. pool just ok
pillows on bed among the worst I have ever seen in a hotel. hallway outside my room constantly had dishes and glasses from other guests' room service - and it just sat there on the floor for far too long.

Fellow travellers beware
The Royal Palm Hotel is a charming old style residence that sits in the back drop of Camel Back mountain. The staff were wonderful and friendly. Barbara who showed us to our room was lovely pointing out all the hotel features. And Jesse who served out breakfast on both days couldn’t have been more helpful – I’m sure he’ll go far.
Firstly as a wheelchair accessible room we were very pleased with having a 1st floor room that looked across the pool over to the mountain. As an early riser I was very much looking forward to a coffee watching the sun rise listening to the birds. Unfortunately this was not to be as three leaf blowers commenced every morning around 5.30am. This was an unpleasant morning alarm and ruined the opportunity for a quiet coffee. Then there is the case of use been bitten. After our first night we both woke to little red welts on us. My wife insisted that these were mosquito bites – I wasn’t so sure. After the second night we woke with even more bite marks and we were both scratching the itches which of course made them worse. After arriving home my wife went to the pharmacy to get some antihistamine and cream. At this point she was told they were bed bug bites. One recognisable pointer is that they have slightly brown centres and tend to track in a line which is unlike mosquito bites. To say we were not pleased is an understatement. We arrived at the Royal Palm Hotel and at no point did anyone mention a charge for parking. Not the actual valet, the reception guys when checking in and I don’t remember booking.com mentioning this either. So to be hit with a $38/night parking charge was a complete surprise. Then we had the State Occupancy Tax of 7.27% which as a tourist you quickly get used to. But it was strange to then get the City Occupancy Tax of 5.3% which we hadn’t been charged elsewhere in Phoenix. Then there was the Resort Fee which was a flat rate of $35/day. Then there was the Resort Fee State Occupancy Tax of 7.27% and then on top of this was the Resort Fee City Occupancy Tax of 5.3%. Then just in case that wasn’t enough there was the Misc Sales Tax again a flat rate of $3.27. So overall from an initial charge per night of $391 we ended up with extra charges of £129.82 per night.

Pleasant
The history wall.
The air conditioning in the room did not work at all. It was hot the entire night. The back door to our patio had a large gap and we woke up with multiple misquotes in our room + bites.
