Amerikalinjen, Oslo

Jernbanetorget 2, 0154 Oslo, Norway. (show on map)

Amerikalinjen, located in the heart of Oslo, is housed in the grand former headquarters of the Norwegian America Line. Designed by architects Bjercke and Eliassen in a stately Neo-Baroque style, the building opened in 1919 and served as the gateway for thousands of Norwegians embarking on transatlantic journeys to the United States. Today, the hotel thoughtfully preserves this maritime heritage, featuring original architectural details like high ceilings and grand staircases alongside curated vintage photography and maps.

The hotel leans into its history with a New York City-inspired aesthetic, celebrating the “Golden Age” of travel and jazz. One of its standout features is Gustav, an intimate basement jazz club named after the company’s founder, Gustav Henriksen. Guests can also enjoy the Haven courtyard, a serene, glass-roofed oasis filled with greenery, or sample cocktails at Pier 42, an award-winning bar that pays homage to the famous Manhattan pier where the company’s ships once docked.

Sustainability and local design are at the forefront here. The hotel showcases beautiful lamps from Norwegian designer Birger Dahl and furniture from the local brand Eikund, which guests can even purchase. For those seeking relaxation, the wellness area offers a Finnish sauna and heated mosaic loungers, providing a quiet retreat from the bustling city center.

Its location next to Jernbanetorget and the central station makes it incredibly convenient for travelers. You are just a short walk from major cultural landmarks like the striking Oslo Opera House, the Munch Museum, and the historic Akershus Fortress, placing the best of Norway’s capital right at your doorstep.

Expert reviews

Forbes review:

“Amerikalinjen’s style tips a hat to American culture, namely the great jazz age, old Hollywood glam and the comfort of a cold Coca-Cola. It offers a basement jazz club inspired by such places in New York and festive jazz brunches.”

New York Times review:

“Amerikalinjen, across from the train station, occupies the former headquarters of the passenger line that once took Norwegian immigrants to New York. Rates cover a terrific breakfast that, in a nod to its New York connections, includes decent bagels.”

Featured in New York Times’ 36 Hours in Oslo.

Telegraph review:

“Amerikalinjen is a humming cluster of cool, slickly designed restaurants and bars, where guests and fashionable locals eat, drink and play. Most of all, it’s a space that salute’s Norway’s history and flies the flag for all things local, thrusting this underrated Scandinavian city into the spotlight it deserves.”

Superb place for exploring Oslo

Great place to be, right in the centre of Oslo, so all attractions are within a small distance; excellent breakfast and all staff were great and very helpful, especially Ronna from Reception who solved a booking question with ease and swiftness.

For my taste, the sauna could be a bit hotter (close to 100 degrees), and the prices for laundry items could perhaps be a bit less in price.

The hotel in Oslo

Central location, Spacious room, luxurious decor, great breakfast buffet, working and fast WiFi

The room was too cold, only possible to change the room temp 3degrees up/down. Room service wasn’t available all day, and the Bar was closed that day…

Great service, excellent location, really clean, great breakfast. I’ll be back.

Pretty much everything. Excellent whisky options.

In the sauna, the screw heads are exposed so they get scolding hot. They need to be drilled deeper into the wood so I don’t burn myself again when I’m back in January.

In the heart of the City Center. The location is fabulous.

The location is in the city center and in the heart of everything. Walking everywhere was convenient and very easy. The breakfast had a nice selection each morning. The sauna facilities were clean and available without a reservation. The staff in all of the areas we frequented were responsive, helpful, and informative. There is a safe in the room. The history of the building was interesting, and we enjoyed learning about the city.

Good hotel in a good location.

Hotel is in a great spot. Right near central station. Breakfast was great.

Not the prettiest view out front or back while they demolish a car park.

A great location in an historic hotel. Music on the square kept us awake.

Great location. Excellent breakfast. Fitness room very good, if a little dark and dated. Staff was friendly, professional, always very helpful.

Given the heat wave, we of course would have liked air conditioning. We were grateful for the fan.

Our room was quite noisy, facing the Tiger area. During booking, it would be good to know that a superior room faces that noisy area.

A great, quality property in a grand building in Central Oslo.

Centrally located walking distance from the Oslo Central Train Station. Beautiful property. Great restaurant and bar in hotel. Lovely Al fresco section for drinks or dining. A nice gym/fitness center in the hotel. Room was very comfortable.

The hotel does not have central air conditioning in the rooms, which is normally not an issue in Norway. But for my July visit with temperatures near 80 degrees, the room was quite warm. The staff, anticipating this brought a portable air conditioner to my room on arrival which I was able to use during my stay. Very comfortable with that provided.

Great location, beautiful hotel, friendly staff, fun bar and restaurant, a great experience.

We loved the old building, the bar and restaurant, the friendly staff. Great hair dryers, cool bathroom and comfy bed.

You have to lug suitcases up from the lobby to the elevator. No problem for us, but it could be an issue for others.

Great hotel for a trip to Oslo

Superb location, decor both in room and throughout, room layout, well equipped en suite and a great breakfast with plenty of choices to start the day!
Staff at the front desk were very helpful from check in to checkout.

Only slight negative was the one evening we thought we would stay at the hotel and make use of the proudly promoted award winning bar it was closed. No big deal though as the hotel is very close to a good selection of bars and restaurants.
